In the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series, Harry Dresden’s investigation of a grisly double murder pulls him into the darkest depths of magical Chicago… And those that do enjoy playing with humans far too much. He also knows he’s the best at what he does. Technically, he’s the only at what he does. But even though Harry is the only game in town, business—to put it mildly—stinks.
So when the Chicago P.D. bring him in to consult on a double homicide committed with black magic, Harry’s seeing dollar signs. But where there’s black magic, there’s a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry’s name…
“A great series—fast-paced, vividly realized and with a hero/narrator who’s excellent company.”—Cinescape

I enjoy Harry Dresden’s humor in the face of some vividly terrifying or dangerous monsters, both human and nonhuman. The magical is seamlessly interlaced with a gritty reality that makes it plausible and entertaining. This series is packed with non-stop action and plot twists. You won’t want to put it down!
I love ALL books butcher!
Who doesn’t live Dresden? *glares* If you don’t, you haven’t lived. These books look like simple urban fantasy mysteries, and on some level they are. But that’s not all they are. Harry is a wonder of a character, kind and flawed and courageous and foolish and proud and hurt and the consequences of each book carries forward, changing him. Do yourself a favor, get into the Dresden files. This is the first one, you won’t regret it.
Harry Dresden is my favorite character. These books continue to evolve and grow the story in unpredictable ways
interesting and fun
Harry Dresden’s origin story. A great place to dive into urban fantasy.
Great introduction to the Dresden world.
I just recently tried this book, the first in the Dresden files, and found it very entertaining and amusing. Dresden, the main character, is a private eye wizard. It’s done nicely in private eye speak, like a Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe, but of course there’s this supernatural twist. I intend to continue the series.
I have all in the series, waiting for the last book to come out
Warning if you read this book you will be addicted. Go back and read from the beginning as the characters grow with each story told. Be prepared to buy a lot of books. And I mean real books. This series is a “keeper”!
A great addition to the world of The Dresden Files
I really enjoy the Harry Dresden series. There are times I want to smack Harry, but I can say that about most great characters! 🙂 I also want to ask the universe to cut the poor guy a break sometimes! I do keep returning to the series, so that’s the best recommendation I can give.
I really like this series. I’ve read it before and am reading it again.
I love the Dresden files!
Jim Butcher is one of my favorite authors. I can read and reread his books and find more treats each time.
I love, love, love this book and Jim Butcher is my favorite author! Very highly recommended!
Great beginning to a wonderful series
Love all of the Dresden books. How can you not love a real wizard who advertises in the yellow pages.
I love this whole series! The characters are so funny. It’s full of action, both predictable and unpredictable. The main character narrates. He’s both hated and loved. He’s a wizard who must fight off the supernatural. He has his favorite sidekicks. I highly recommend starting this book to get into the series. Some long series get boring after awhile. Not this one!
Jim Butcher has written almost the definitive work of modern urban fantasy. Echoes of western tropes (lone marshal against criminals), mixed with hints of ‘Rocky’ (underdog who won’t quit), with elements of mystery. In Harry Dresden, you a tarnished Paladin trying to fight the good fight and rarely escaping unscathed.
