Nominee for the Pulitzer and winner of the Spur Award, ‘Stone Song’ is the classic, and extraordinarily told, story of the Lakota Sioux mystic warrior, Crazy Horse. Of all the iconic figures of Native American history, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. To this day he strides across American history as a man who lived—and died—on his own terms. “’Stone Song’ is a deeply spiritual story about … spiritual story about the soul journey of a great and mysterious American hero.” ~ The Dallas Morning News.
Ridiculed as a boy for his white-man looks, he called for a vision, and received a great one . . . a vision that would shape his life. He was to fight for his people. In order to be successful, he must not accept traditional Lakota finery, rewards, and would sacrifice the dream of a wife and children. By following his vision, and his destiny of that as a mystic warrior, he was able to lead his people to their greatest victory—the defeat of General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Called to his monumental task, and tortured by his deeply passionate love of a woman, Crazy Horse found peace only in battle. Drawing inspiration from the eternal wisdom of his people, he discovered the means to defeat the U.S. Army at its own deadly game.

not what I expected not really about what it implies
Great historical fiction read. Should probably get the next in the series.
Interesting perspective, however I could not get into this book.
If Native American culture and history interests you, this is an excellent read! It’s quite long, but definitely worth my time, as I found it quite fascinating!
Stone Song is a fictional biography of Crazy Horse. It is very good but the author gets wrapped around his similes and hyperbole so much that you may want to skip forward. The writing style is different but it shows an ‘inner’ look at not just the character Crazy Horse but Native American thought as well. My only real criticism is the book needs a good editor in order to be 5 stars.
Great re-telling of the life of Crazy Horse.
Loved reading it
Well researched, well-written account of the life of a Native American cultural hero. Crazy Horse’s dedication to his people and his culture is awe-inspiring.
In depth explanations and examples of a part of the native American experience, as well as some of the historical Army characters like Gen. Crook. Fascinating cultural tidbits like the changes of names and protocols for marriage and divorce.
Didn’t hold my interest. Very slow.
The author inhabits the 19th century visionary we now call Crazy Horse, bringing his character and spirituality to the fore. Splendid historic fiction.
Disappointing attempt at understanding the other view of the plains Indians
It was interesting at the beginning but was to boring when they got into the wars
Excellent historical novel on Crazy Horse.
Win Blevins is one of my favorite authors. He writes about Native American Indians in such a way that the reader is right there with them. He presents historical facts but in narratives about the Lakota, the Oglala, the people, who lived and died. In Stone Song, I feel as if I am actually with Crazy Horse as he receives his seeing beyond vision, as he fights, as he loves, as he dies. A wonderful book.
Very strong character that I would bet $ on no one in today’s time knows anyone like him. He’s legendary; like Achilles, Hercules or America’s very own Mountain Men!
was hard to keep an interest
well written history of Crazy Horse and the Lakota Way. I really enjoyed this book.
I enjoyed reading this book about older days as our country was being settled. It’s very sad to read how badly our country’s leaders from that time lied and cheated the Indians, how the military would kill and destroy whole Indian encampments, kill men, women and children, burn all their belongings even all the food and leave them to starve.
A very enlightening read into Crazy Horse and his life. Thoroughly enjoyed the author as well.
