Nominee for the Pulitzer and winner of the Spur Award, ‘Stone Song’ is the classic, and extraordinarily told, story of the Lakota Sioux mystic warrior, Crazy Horse. Of all the iconic figures of Native American history, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. To this day he strides across American history as a man who lived—and died—on his own terms. “’Stone Song’ is a deeply spiritual story about … spiritual story about the soul journey of a great and mysterious American hero.” ~ The Dallas Morning News.
Ridiculed as a boy for his white-man looks, he called for a vision, and received a great one . . . a vision that would shape his life. He was to fight for his people. In order to be successful, he must not accept traditional Lakota finery, rewards, and would sacrifice the dream of a wife and children. By following his vision, and his destiny of that as a mystic warrior, he was able to lead his people to their greatest victory—the defeat of General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Called to his monumental task, and tortured by his deeply passionate love of a woman, Crazy Horse found peace only in battle. Drawing inspiration from the eternal wisdom of his people, he discovered the means to defeat the U.S. Army at its own deadly game.

too slow for me
Life like version of the life of Crazy Horse. A close tragic look into the life of one of the most famous Native Americans. I learned so much, about American history. Sad story, well communicated.
This was a real surprise for me. I had never expected an in depth look at the man who made history at Little Big Horn. I see him not as a warrior, capable of brutally killing so many soldiers in one of the bloodiest battles ever recorded in history, but as a man who had hopes that were not realized, loves that went wrong, friends and enemies who prodded him along on his way to both fame and infamy. This was one of those books that you can’t wait to finish while wishing it never had to end.
As a Native American, this was a great history lesson for me and I gained additional perspective as a result.
Excellent novel on the life of the great Lacota leader. Extremely well researched. Valuable speculation on the importance of spirituality in every day life and the struggles that face true and honorable leaders. Having read many books about Crazy Horse over the course of my life , I found this book to be at the top of the list. The author includes some native language with translation and also carefully notes facts from thoughtful, educated imagination. Highly recommended.
Great read!
It made me have a better understandin of the Indian side of The Indian wars.
I loved this book. It made me laugh. It made me cry. Like every Native American book, it broke my heart. Very well written and informative.
A superb recounting and revelation of one of America’s most iconic and mysterious characters. I found myself totally absorbed in Our Strange Man, with greater understanding of the travesty and betrayal committed by whites against Indians. A powerful must-read.
Beautifully written and engrossing.
Wonderful study on Lakota Tribe and life of Crazy House written in fiction format.
This book was my bedtime read over three months, so the reading pace was slow and slower. Unlike many novels that grab me at some point in the narrative with the need to read for hours on end, this book seemed content to reveal itself at my laconic pace. The ending was known in advance; the path to that end was the revelation. I did not like His Horses are Crazy, but I think that is my shortcoming. He was a mystery to his own people, and I am viewing him from a different place in time and in culture. The betrayals and heartbreak in his life helped to humanize this legendary Lakota.
If you chose to read this biographical novel I have one suggestion, start at the back of the book at Historical Notes. There was much information in these pages that I wish I had known at the start; that could be my personality, but it will not spoil the novel in any way, and may help your enjoyment of this book.
Anything Wil Blevens writes is worth taking the time to read
I quit reading because I didn’t find it intereesting to me
History buffs will love this book. Those who just want to read about certain Indian tribes will appreciate authenticity of the book.
Great story, but hard to follow since there is a lot of translation. I think I would rather hear the story from a person telling it to me to truly understand and respect the meaning.
Illuminating about the importance of visions in Lakota indians.
This story makes a true leader come alive that could only happen with extreme research and imagination
This is a sad story. I found it fascinating to step into a culture and mindset so different from my own. There is much to admire in the character of Crazy Horse, much to condemn in those who interacted with him. I hadn’t known much about him, and this was an interesting way to learn. I enjoyed the book.
About time¡!!!now if they would just show general Howard’s orders on the Nez Perce, maybe some apologies from the government made and the truth finally told!!!
