Nominee for the Pulitzer and winner of the Spur Award, ‘Stone Song’ is the classic, and extraordinarily told, story of the Lakota Sioux mystic warrior, Crazy Horse. Of all the iconic figures of Native American history, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. To this day he strides across American history as a man who lived—and died—on his own terms. “’Stone Song’ is a deeply spiritual story about … spiritual story about the soul journey of a great and mysterious American hero.” ~ The Dallas Morning News.
Ridiculed as a boy for his white-man looks, he called for a vision, and received a great one . . . a vision that would shape his life. He was to fight for his people. In order to be successful, he must not accept traditional Lakota finery, rewards, and would sacrifice the dream of a wife and children. By following his vision, and his destiny of that as a mystic warrior, he was able to lead his people to their greatest victory—the defeat of General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Called to his monumental task, and tortured by his deeply passionate love of a woman, Crazy Horse found peace only in battle. Drawing inspiration from the eternal wisdom of his people, he discovered the means to defeat the U.S. Army at its own deadly game.

Life changing, absolutely amazing. Everyone should read this book.
Stone Song opened my eyes to the way the American Indians became slowly dependent upon the White man and his things–but not his ways. The author also portrayed the totally different manner and thought pathways of the different tribes associated with His Crazy Horse. The research the author did on this book is not only admirable and impressive, but it made me realize that he had to immerse himself into the life of these Indians. Nothing about his writing allowed me to believe that his rendering of their lives was in any way romantic, but rather simple and as close to the earth as men and women could be and still be dependent on the largess of Nature to their survival. This book is an absolute must for anyone who wants to learn more about the lives of American Indians and the reasons for their removal from their homes. As sad as it may be, I am so glad I read the book.
This should be required reading for every new law school student. Especially those interested in human justice.
History as it was, not as we were NOT taught in school.
I took longer than usual to read this book simply because I needed to “go away from it” at certain stages because I was saddened by the events of that area and age! It was well written and the lives of the Native Americans was documented well. His Crazy Horse was certainly an unusual man and a strong force. I am glad I read it, even knowing the end. Much misunderstanding and malice caused so much damage!
Win does a great job of making the inter mountain west of the 1800s come alive!
If you’re interested at all in the history of Crazy Horse and General George Custer, you have to read this book. It is fabulous.
Great story of a horrible time in our history!
I own and read several of Win Blevins books. They are so good it’s hard to say the one I like most. Highly recommend.
Thank you Mr Blevins for taking me to a higher place in life thru this novel. I could feel the spirits talking and working in the lives of the Indians I lived their story, I felt totally a part of their life.
His Crazy Horse seemed destined to be who he was, although he earnestly sought the spirit life to help him on his road. When things were right his animal spirit, the hawk, was content within him. He chose to live an unassuming life but stood out as a great man, a great chief, a great warrior. He didn’t choose the life; it chose him.
Our author Win Blevins worked magic for me with this novel of His Crazy Horse. . I cant remember being this caught up so that I forgot I was reading a book and believed I was there living that life. I was moved to a higher plane of self.
An EXTRAORDINARY book. Each page perfectly researched and crafted. Truly a book for the ages. Win Blevins has drawn a multi-dimentional word/picture for the reader to not only read, buy to see and feel each event in an acute manner! Perfection is not easily achieve, however, the author has brilliantly succeeded! Thank you for writing this book, as it has permanently changed my way of seeing this time in history.
This will not be for everybody. he writes it like traditionally we would speak so sometimes it is drawn out. I enjoyed that because i could relate to it being native, but not everyone understands nor has patience for this. though a novel i have read enough on this man to realize he did a lot of realistic research and interviews.
From the perspective of Native Americans, especially Crazy Horse, and brought understanding of the culture of his community.
If you like reading about the original americans and especially how they were treated by the US government, this is an excellent book. The story of Crazy Horse through his (imagined) voice.
Immensely satisfying read. Great cultural insight, vividly portrayed characters.
This book was interesting but didn’t keep my interest as much as I thought it would.
This imaginative, sympathetic novel of the life of Crazy Horse is rooted in Blevin’s personal immersion in Native American culture, especially that of the northern North American Plains. Its authenticity rings true on every page. The historical facts of Crazy Horse’s life are embellished with believable dialogue and detail. The description of the battle of the Little Bighorn , told from the Plains Indian perspective was enlightening. Well worth the read for the history buff. I couldn’t put it down.
A look at how to lose paradise.
Just did not care for this book
There are very few books that I put away before I complete them. This one, however, I could not finish. Boring and confusing. Poorly written.
