Nominee for the Pulitzer and winner of the Spur Award, ‘Stone Song’ is the classic, and extraordinarily told, story of the Lakota Sioux mystic warrior, Crazy Horse. Of all the iconic figures of Native American history, Crazy Horse remains the most enigmatic. To this day he strides across American history as a man who lived—and died—on his own terms. “’Stone Song’ is a deeply spiritual story about … spiritual story about the soul journey of a great and mysterious American hero.” ~ The Dallas Morning News.
Ridiculed as a boy for his white-man looks, he called for a vision, and received a great one . . . a vision that would shape his life. He was to fight for his people. In order to be successful, he must not accept traditional Lakota finery, rewards, and would sacrifice the dream of a wife and children. By following his vision, and his destiny of that as a mystic warrior, he was able to lead his people to their greatest victory—the defeat of General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Called to his monumental task, and tortured by his deeply passionate love of a woman, Crazy Horse found peace only in battle. Drawing inspiration from the eternal wisdom of his people, he discovered the means to defeat the U.S. Army at its own deadly game.

It is evident that the author did a lot of research on the indian tribes, their customs, beliefs, rituals. It was informative even though fictional, that’s what makes it historical fiction. I can surely understand that it must have taken a lot of thought to conjure up the characters’ interactions with each other within the camp. It was well done and an okay book.
Insight into a tragic native American.
There was some repetitious moments throughout the book, but still worth reading.
Don’t know if the short, simple sentences was an indication the author thinks Indians could not think in complex thoughts, he was trying to indicate they were not speaking English or the book was written for children. I tried three times to read it and could just not keep it up. Boring.
What a sad commentary on how the Indians were treated by the white man.
Very informative. A brief summary of American Indian trials and tribulations.
Highly recommend if you like Historically accurate with a bit of romantic fiction
What a wonderful book. Sure puts a new and different slant on our ancestors
and how they honored their promises and how they viewed a different
people.
Count my heart as one of a million changed by this book.
Excellent read; provides an outstanding view to Native American culture. A story of courage and inner stregenth
A must read!
Lots of previously unknown information about His Crazy Horse and the Lakota Nation. Also interesting use of Lakota language.
After visiting the Crazy Horse Monument near Custer SD. , I found this book extremely interesting. Anyone interested in history will love this book.
Stone Song is a very well researched and written book . A example of what a well written book should read like. I cannot say enough good things about Stone Song. Its been a while since a book from amazon has grabbed my attention the way this one has. Couldn’t put it down, read the whole thing in two days. I will be recommending Stone Song to everyone I talk to.
Ideal mixture of factual history with authors imagined thoughts of the characters. Just what historical fiction should espouse.
This book would’ve received five stars if it wasn’t so slow moving. I thought that once Crazy Horse got older, the story would get moving faster. I understand the author wanted readers to get immersed in the Indian culture of that era, but it is just too too slow. I have actually fallen asleep trying to read it and that is something I’ve NEVER done! I’m anxious to get to the battle of Little Big Horn, but I need to put the book down for a while and read something else.
I’m extremely disappointed in the slowness of the book, especially after I read the prologue, visiting where Chief Crazy Horse is being carved from rock in S Dakota and visiting the battlefield at Little Big Horn. The book gives such great insights into Indian culture, but is just too extremely slow moving for me!
I enjoyed this book immensely. It was captivating, informative, difficult to put down. I would like to read more by this author. Top rated!
Good read.
Very informative, explained a lot about the native tribal feeling and understandinsg about how to live and think
Very hard to get into the story, burdened with too much drama and detail…
I loved this book and its characters. I hated to see it end.
