The government recruited him. They were looking for the smartest. They got the toughest.
Dale Conley’s covert missions take him deep into the shadows—but he’s never seen anything this dark. A town’s entire population is abducted overnight, a crime that bears an eerie resemblance to the fabled Lost Colony of Roanoke. The only clue: a cryptic, historical message chiseled into a bloody stone.
As Dale feverishly races the clock, he’s met with the demented mass-kidnapper’s escalating demands. But it’s only when survivors begin to reappear—maimed, broken, dead—that Dale realizes the kidnapper knows about Dale’s dark past. Now Dale must clash with his own demons to have any chance at saving the missing people.
Each Dale Conley thriller brims with historical intrigue. STONE GROOVE features: the fabled Lost Colony of Roanoke and the mysterious Dare Stones.
If you like action heroes with the tenacity of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, the intelligence of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon, and the sheer grit of Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne, then you’ll love Dale Conley.

Maybe I’m just not up on my game, but the identity of the villain really surprised me. The only thing I didn’t care for was the way the story switches back and forth between past and present, but that’s just a personal preference because I’m impatient. The main character is quite likeable and proves the adage wrong about the good guy always getting the girl.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it. This story has an interesting premise with an intricate plot and strong historical links. The characters are quirky but shallow and not as well developed as I had hoped. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
Too far-fetched for me to buy into.
Great page turner, enjoyed
What a ride! Very suspenseful and lots of surprises along the way. Loved the Dale Conley character and ALL characters worked well together….and plot was excellent. Definitely superb writing by Erik Carter. Definitely a page turner and a great read!!
Wow, this was interesting. Very intense & creative plot & characters, very well done. Loved the narration also, really did a great job and brought the words to life. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, really great! I’d definitely recommend this one! And, would definitely be up for reading more in the series, fantastic job!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I like the main character but didn’t care for the storyline
Too many unrealistic situations – unless magic was involved. Which it wasn’t. Disappointing read.
I loved the riddles at the beginning of the book. After that point, that entire premise became tedious, repetitious, and increasingly more juvenile. I believe this book is more appropriately written for middle grade readers, rather than adults. I couldn’t wait for it to be finished.
I liked the story and the characters. Just a little predicable, but still a good read.
The book was both interesting and unusual in some ways, but I had a feeling of discomfort throughout that had little to do with the plot. I couldn’t warm up to the main character, the lusting for his car was annoying, and the riddles got old, fast (too many authors are grabbing on the Dan Brown train still). It was highly contrived, and the ending dragged on for what felt like forever. I actually hoped someone would knock off the hero just to put an end to it all.
I finished the book in record time. I could not put it down. The twists throughout made it challenging to determine who-dun-it. I loved the agent character.
While an entertaining afternoon read it is not a book I would pick up again. I thought that the story line although it all worked together, was a bit contrived and the characters not as developed as they might be.
Not very well thought out. The hero was supposed to have had an FBI provided alternate identity kind of like a witness protection ID but no less than seven characters knew of his previous life. If it was just a passing thing I could have overlooked but it drives the plot. If you were truly to become “another person” you could only do it by cutting ties with all your acquaintances. Just too far fetched and unbelievable.
Plot dragged out too long . Became boring. Didn’t finish
When reviewing books, I’m torn between a 4 and a 5 rating for some of them. I used to give 5s to only those books that could become classics. However, I am no longer being that stingy with my ratings. This book is definitely worth reading for the mystery and entertainment. But no, it won’t become a classic.
Different genres put together. A lot of people and situations
The plot of the book is interesting. However, some details are just too far beyond what a sensible person usually accepts.
I liked the characters, the story line is very similar to other cults with tragic outcomes.
The main character is very likable, smart & cares about the people trapped in this nightmare
This book has the dubious honor of receiving my first one star review. Really, was it written by a hormonal teenage boy? Contained more insults to women than I’d ever expect to find in one place. Unreadable.
