HERThis was never supposed to happen to me. I was smart. I was strong. I was a fucking first degree black belt for fuck’s sake, but none of that mattered. Not when you’re out-gunned and outnumbered. I was stolen from my life and thrown into the dark and hollow depths of human trafficking. But it’s not all glitter and rainbows…especially when it comes to him. He wants me beaten. He wants me … me broken. But most importantly, he just wants me and that’s the scariest thing of all. I won’t let him win. I won’t let him break me. I’ll come back like steel every time. Because in the end, what doesn’t kill me will only make me stronger…
HIM
I’m not a very nice guy. I’m a terrible person in fact, but I’m not going to pretend to care. I have a billion-dollar empire to run that manifests carnage, blood, and money and I crave it all. Nothing ever got in my way, nothing stopped me. If I wanted something, I made it happen, that is until this damn red-head crawled into my life. Strong, defiant, and a mixed martial artist, she was everything I never expected to want in a woman. Breaking her down became an obsession as she’d always somehow pop back up like a damn weed I couldn’t kill. It was addicting and it became harder and harder for me to pretend I didn’t love the taste of her fire every time I covered her with my ice. I wanted more and I’ll be damned if I didn’t get it. Because in the end, I always get what I want.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS ONE OF THE SICKEST CRIMES OUT THERE , TO LITERALLY SNATCH ANYONE, MAN OR WOMAN OF THE STREET SO SOME SICK BASTARD CAN GET HIS JOLLIES IS HORRIFIC YET IT HAPPENS, MORE AND MORE EACH DAY IT SEEMS.
I seen someone mention this book in a Facebook Group I belong to, so I one clicked and downloaded the book and have been clued to it ever since, I am either depraved or something is wrong with me, because this book made me cringe, mouth open in shock at some of the scenes written yet could not put it down.
Jay Marie is a new author to me, so didn’t know really what to expect, I do like the dark reads, lets me get my teeth into the seedier harder side of life, Like a voyeur you witness the absolute horror of kidnapping and trafficking and all though you know the book is fiction it is also incredibly real.
Never say it wouldn’t happen to you, because it just might !! What would you do if you woke up in your worst nightmare
The book it self is fantastic, but it is part of a 3 book series, I only read them because they are all available, other wise it would have been a no go.
I hate the lead male, and I’ve got to be honest if this ends up where the female ends up falling in love with this man, I will be very disappointed, am sorry I know Stockholm Syndrome an all, but NO just no, I want him and all the others burning in the fire pits of hell.
This is an erotic thriller series about a girl who’s been abducted and forced into the savage world of human trafficking. Jaden wakes up, literally, in her worst nightmare after being drugged and stolen away from a life she worked so hard to build. What’s worse is that she’s dedicated so much of her life to ensuring that she would never be victimized. She’s spent years training as a mixed martial artist. She is beautiful, but not your average girly girl. She loves the outdoor sports, motorcycles, guns, UFC, and she’s not a big fan of pink. She soon finds out the hard way, that no amount of training could have prepared her for the Owner.
This story is about the strength and endurance of the human spirit and the turmoil that one girl goes though in a struggle to maintain control of her life, body, and soul.
Jaden’s story is not for the faint of heart, but it is SO worth it! J. Marie does such an amazing job at character development in this book. This story is told from both Jaden’s and the Owner’s POV. This really helped me to connect with both characters, especially Jaden. Every time she was defiant I almost felt my spine start to tingle for her because I knew how bad her punishment was going to be, just as well as she did.
The Owner…. I hate him so much …. And if this turns around that she falls in love with hin I will be very very disappointed, because some of the things he has done to this poor woman and literally how he makes a living is disgusting. You do get a small glimpse into a side of him that not many see, and you will suddenly understand why Jaden has conflicted feelings about him. Where me personally want to see him burn. I love that J. Marie kept such a mystery about the Owner. I LOVE his possessive personality.
The power struggle in this book is real and intense, both physically and emotionally, not just for the characters, but for the readers as well, which is what makes this such a fantastic book!
My final word of advice, make sure you have a couple days set aside for yourself, because once you start this story, you won’t want to put it down until you’ve read them all!
This book could cause triggers it is extremely violent in particular towards the women, Rape is in the book, but it is necessary for the story to have such an impact.
My advice is if you do like the darker reads then this will not bother you, but if you are a novice avoid.
Happy reading now onto book 2 !!!
This book is so much more then just a dark read…It is a story of an AMAZINGLY strong woman’s survival after she is snatched from her everyday life and placed in pure hell!!!
J. Marie has written a book that has completely and utterly BLOWN MY SOCKS OFF!!! I literally read this book in one sitting…REFUSING to put it down!!! I was grabbed from the very beginning and 1000% invested in Jaden’s fight for her own sanity and survival. I instantly connected with this young woman and felt like I was fighting along with her!!!
The graphic scenes in this book are very graphic, but I think that J. Marie did the right thing by shining a light on the atrocities that stolen human beings suffered at the hands of their captors. She is shining a light on a really REAL problem!! Through her words, J. Marie is not only educating her readers about the issue…but she is telling us to STAND UP and FIGHT!!! Don’t go down with the dying of the light but rage!!! The message that I am choosing to walk away from this book is to NEVER back done…NEVER stop fighting for my freedom…I am worth it!!!
I highly highly highly recommend this book to any woman!!! This is a book about one woman’s fight to survive and overcome the HORRIFIC hand that life dealt her. This book is empowering and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next installment of this series!!! WELL DONE J. MARIE!!! She is definitely an author to follow and support!!!
I picked this book up on one of those freebie posts not expecting much. Really this storyline is usually a DNF for me or an extreme case of rage which makes me feel miserable enough to only read light fluffy romantic books for a few days. I must say the character of Jaden gave me quite a bit of hope with this one though. She caught my imagination with her fierce will to survive and escape. Usually in this scenario the victims can’t really fight back with any true strength and have almost zero chances of escape .I despise the Owner with every fiber of my being. He is a monster without an ounce of remorse for the awful things he forces upon Jaden and other characters in this book. I will continue with this series in hopes that Jaden gives the Owner the ending he deserves. Team Jaden!
This is one very dark book about a very dark subject. I have read other books about human trafficking, but I think this is probably the best one so far. It doesn’t paint a pretty picture, but what is pretty about slavery? Jaden is far from a cowered and subdued victim. She is one strong, kick-ass heroine, who refuses to give in. Even if her body is broken, her mind is still strong. She is always looking for a way out. There are times you wish she could just have kept her mouth shut, since each subsequent punishment gets worse. You wonder how much she can take without dying in the process of abuse she is subjected to. The Owner has taken a particular interest in her, which is definitely not a good thing. Jaden is a mixed martial artist and gets herself into many physical confrontations with the guards and the Owner. I really enjoyed the description of the combat situations she found herself in. I immediately purchased book 2, as I had seen book 3 was also out. Then I realized that there is going to be 5 books in this series. That is great, as a reader, but I can’t stand to wait when I can’t keep going. I guess that’s a good dilemma to be in, so I hope the last 2 come out quickly.
This is a pretty dark book. There pretty much isn’t any light going on in here, but it’s an interesting story, nonetheless.
Jaden wakes up naked and in a cage. She doesn’t know where she is or how she got there. The woman in a cage next to her lets her know some of what has happened. She’s been taken by traffickers and turned into a slave. But Jaden is a fighter. She has spent her life training in various martial arts and is a mixed martial artist with black belts and championships under her belt. So she’s surprised that she was able to be taken. But she’s still going to fight.
When the owner is shown Jaden, he can see that she’s a fighter. That’s fine with him, he likes to break fighters. And when Jaden turns out to be more of a fighter than he thought, after kicking the butts of several of his men in a futile bid for escape, he has the perfect excuse to punish her. And that’s when he realizes that he’s obsessed with her.
I love that we never learn the name of the owner. That just makes him so much more menacing. The nameless evil is always scarier than someone with a name. It makes them less human. It works really well when it comes to this guy. Jaden is seriously stubborn and such a fighter. I loved watching her beat down some of her captors. However, there are times when her fighting isn’t necessarily the best thing for her. If she had backed down a little bit and stopped fighting some, she would’ve saved herself a lot of pain.
It will be interesting to see the next books and see what happens next.
This book is phenomenal for those who like dark erotic stories and can handle reading depraved and twisted writing because it definitely had that! However, it was so much more than that.
This is the ultimate survival story. It’s every woman’s worse nightmare and the author truly delves into Jaden’s story. It makes you question how any person can survive what she goes through especially when the point is made, out of all females, she should not have been taken. Jaden has been taught how to fight and how to keep alert. This added a breathtaking component that I don’t see many other books. I loved seeing Jaden have that fight even when it made me cringe.
It’s definitely not a one-dimensional story. Each character has depth to it and Jay Marie makes sure to elicit every emotion possible. My favorite authors are the ones who focus not just on the two lead characters but put effort into world building and this author does not disappoint from other women taken to even the guards. Jay Marie specifically crafted each word and scene because she created a (sadly) realistic world that broke my heart and left me wanting to know more. I can’t wait to read book 2.
Highly recommend for those who love very dark reads.
Phenomenal!!!
I don’t even know what to say about this book. I really don’t. I’m not sure it’s fair to refer to it as a dark romance… the dark part is accurate, but… there is no romance to be seen. I have read some pretty dark romance, but this just went too far for me. This makes Captive in the Dark look like a fluffy 1950s courtship. (EDIT: the author has described this as a “dark erotic thriller,” and is very clear about it not being a dark romance.)
This is a VERY violent story, including graphic and horrible violence between the two main characters, especially him towards her. The things he does- I don’t see how he could ever be redeemed. The only HEA I can imagine at the end of this series would involve his fiery death coupled with her escape. Or, perhaps him going away to a supermax prison for life without the possibility of parole where he would live the rest of his days in a cage without any control over his life. What he does to her the first time he gets her alone… I hope she eventually gets her wish and kills him.
He can’t come back from the things he’s done, particularly because he is painted as a sociopath incapable of feeling emotion.
FYI, triggers are everywhere in this book- lack of consent (multiple instances), extreme physical violence, mental/emotional terrorism, human trafficking.
While I have reviewed this book, I am unable to rate it. I am too conflicted.
Update: after further consideration I am adding a rating of 5-stars. This book made me upset, it made me sick, and it haunted me. But, that makes it a great book if it can leave such a lingering impression. As such it deserves five stars.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review I loved it, it was brutal but so good.
jaden was taken from her life as a law student and caged like an animal to be sold in a human trafficking ring but they didn’t take in to account her first nature and skill as a martial arts expert. the owner craves the challenge she brings but she’s determined not to break. loved jaden so much great read
Great start to an amazing series! Couldn’t put it down. Jaden is an amazing character and her story will hold you captive.
