Big secrets run deep. Former FBI agent Jack McBride took the job as Chief of Police for Stillwater, Texas, to start a new life with his teenage son, Ethan, away from the suspicions that surrounded his wife’s disappearance a year earlier. With a low crime rate and a five-man police force, he expected it to be a nice, easy gig; hot checks, traffic violations, some drugs, occasional domestic … drugs, occasional domestic disturbances, and petty theft. Instead, within a week he is investigating a staged murder-suicide, uncovering a decades’ old skeleton buried in the woods, and managing the first crime wave in thirty years.
For help navigating his unfamiliar, small-town surroundings, Jack turns to Ellie Martin, one of the most respected women in town–her scandal-filled past notwithstanding. Despite Jack’s murky marriage status and the disapproval of Ethan and the town, they are immediately drawn to each other.
As Jack and Ellie struggle with their budding relationship, they unearth shattering secrets long buried and discover the two cases Jack is working, though fifty years apart, share a surprising connection that will rattle the town to its core.

The book was excellent, but I didn’t like the ending
Wonderful book! Good plot.
It was very entertaining.
Interesting, keeps one up late reading…but, book stopped quickly without an ending, searched, found next book, but at $16.99. Left feeling “realed in” by the author and the costly publisher.
I loved reading this book so had to follow with the sequel, The Fisher King .
Only gave 4 stars because I was disappointed with ending.
Wish I didn’t have to read book 2 to find out what really happens. Found this somewhat deceptive. Needed to be fully a stand alone book. That being said, I did enjoy the book and will probably buy book 2.
Really enjoyed it.
Unpredictable, a good read!
I want to read book 2 in the series. Believable characters.
Very well written. Will be a favorite for a long time
I enjoyed it very much, hard to put down.
Great book, a real page turner!
I enjoyed meeting the characters and the plot held together well.
Very original. Ending was quite abrupt. Is there a sequel?
I couldn’t put it down. It kept me guessing until the end.
I could not finish this book. Bogged down lost interest and never finished.
child rape, teen sex, adult sex, “F” word crammed in too often for me.
Great plot. Good characters. A bit overblown in their flaws.
Interesting. Wouldn’t read it again
