Gina Royal’s serial killer husband is in jail while she and her children start again under new identities, to try to avoid the trolls who believe she was involved in her husband’s crimes. Then a body turns up in the lake near their new home and the terror is brought to their door once again. Stillhouse Lake is a fast-paced, chilling thriller with lots of twists and turns that had me reading late into the night.
This book had me biting my nails and reading late into the night to see what happened. An incredible series. Rachel Caine is a master storyteller who knows exactly how to build tension and suspense. Looking forward to the third and fourth in this series.
Well written and suspenseful.
I always enjoy a unique twist beyond the formulaic tropes of a genre and, oh man, Ms. Caine certainly succeeds with Stillhouse Lake! Stellar writing and a POV from the wife of a serial killer, this is not your typical suspense thriller. I was hooked, line and sinker, from the first paragraph to the last word. A fascinatingly frightening 5 STAR read all the way!
The premise and beginning sucks you right in with chills and won’t let go. This book about a mother’s journey towards healing after a husband and father turned out to be a horrific serial killer. They endure online torment and retreat from the world but that is no way to get past the past.
This book is fast-paced and the further into it I got, the more I wanted to know whodunnit! Premise: A woman is on the run with her children because her husband is a serial killer and there’s a group of people who believe she knew about it and should, therefore, be punished as well. I love a kickass mom who will do anything for her kids and Gina Royal is about as kickass as they come.
I loved Rachel Caine’s paranormal series and I’m thrilled to find this one. The book really moves.
Let me start out by saying that Rachel Caine is an excellent writer. Her prose is concise, controlled, and chillingly violent when the occasion calls for it. This is the first book of hers I’ve read, and I enjoyed it immensely. I especially liked her protagonist, Gina Royal, who is single-minded in her determination to protect her children and herself from the memory of her soulless ex-husband and the thousands of trolls now pursuing the family on social media. Quite a challenge for a former housewife whose main concerns used to be centered around seeing her children off to school and putting dinner on the table.
Loved the character development and thrill of it all.
Stillhouse Lake is one of the best Mysteries/Psychological Thrillers I have read in a very long time. I enjoyed the characters and the story line. Ms. Caine did an excellent job of conveying and justifying Gwen’s paranoia and distrustful attitude. Every time Gwen began having second thoughts about someone she knew, I did too. I found myself holding my breath through the final chapters. The sequel, Killman Creek, is at the very top of my TBR.
This book kept me riveted from the very first page to the last. I bought the second book and have preordered the third. Great series!
I really enjoy this series. The audiobooks are great!
So let me just say I loved this book a lot. But I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because (spoiler alert) the way Mel kills his victims almost seemed inconsistent. One minute Gwen is describing the scene and things she knows but then bam out of no where more details of stuff that wasn’t even mentioned. I get this is the first book of the series but I hope we learn more about Mel and how crazy he is and the things he did and how he did it. I find that way more interesting. I also wish the Gwen would have slept with Sam. I wanted that sex, wanted that relationship to work, and love that he is really man. If she just added that sex scene the truth about Sam would have made more of and impact.
OMG, I was up until 2:30 am reading this. Fantastic. I do have a suggestion for the author. Whenever you start using the words get or got, think again. There are so many more rich words that can be used in their stead. Many times you may have the word got in the same paragraph when four different words would be so much better. Just my pet peeve.
So not what I was expecting and I was riveted from the start.
Wow! On one hand it’s hard to read of acts so disgusting and depraved, but on the other hand in reading one feels the urgency for safety of the family and can not put the book down. Thrilled “my take” or sixth sense on all the characters was valid … though the book tries to sway the reader in many ways. ONE GOOD READ. And I see the author has quite a list of other BOOKS out there. NOW to read more. Although, with the creeps I got from this book, I’m not certain I can handle what continues from this book … Also, not sure I’m gonna sleep peacefully tonight. Glad I’m no longer young and attractive. LOL!
If you were married to a serial killer would you know? Would your children know? What lengths would you go to in order to protect your children from that serial killer or all the people who thought you helped with the killings?
These are daily experiences for Gwen (Gina). She found out her husband was a cold, calculated serial killer. How could she not know? That is a question that haunts her. She lives her life on the run doing everything she can to protect her children from the hatred the public has for her family.
This story was a very good read. It has good character development, realistic struggles and a mom who will do anything to protect her kids. I enjoyed this book so much, I exchanged it on Kindle Unlimited immediately for the next book in the series. I just have to know what happens next.
There are some good twists to the story. I was only able to guess one small “bad” person in the story. I didn’t want to put the book down.
Stillhouse Lake (Stillhouse Lake, #1), my first read from author Rachel Caine. Outstanding psychological thriller/mystery. 10-hours 4-minute/301-pages. I was given an Audible copy of this book back in January of 2018 and lost track of it, now I’m voluntarily reading & reviewing it because every great book needs reviews. Narrator Emily Sutton-Smith’s outstanding narration adds to the book’s enjoyment. Owning both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author. Now I’m going out to buy and read Killman Creek (Stillhouse Lake, #2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
I liked it
Gina Royal’s life changes instantly when a car accident reveals her husband is a serial killer. Now she has a new life as Gwen Proctor and is determined to keep her children safe. Her quiet home in Stillhouse Lake quickly changes when a body is found in the lake and threatening letters begin to arrive.
I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I don’t usually like thrillers without romance but this one was good. It was intense and emotional from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down. Gwen has gone through so much and is such a strong woman. She is so protective and fierce when it comes to her children.
The ending had me on the edge of my seat. It was nonstop action and intense emotions. I hated that it was a cliffhanger because I need to know what will happen next. I also really want to see if a relationship continues between Gwen and Sam.
