Since the disbanding of the Special Homicide Investigation Team, J. P. Beaumont’s biggest concern is pondering whether he and his wife Mel should finally get a dog. But one voicemail from his old friend Ralph Ames is about to change that. Through Ralph, Beau has become involved in an organization called The Last Chance, which enlists a number of retired homicide investigators to tackle … long-unsolved cold cases. The one that has just landed on Beau’s plate is a thirty-year-old missing persons case.
The facts are muddy at best; Janice Marie Harrison’s car was found abandoned near a bridge, and scratched in the dirt nearby was the word “sorry.” It’s possible her death was a suicide, but her body was never found. And as Beau begins to investigate, he discovers that no one connected to Janice—not her once-all-star football player widower, Anders; not her long-grieving sister, Estelle; not sheriff Gavin Loper, who was deputy sheriff at the time of Janice’s disappearance; and not Anders’s second wife Betsy—is exactly what they seem. The question is, which of them knows the truth?
And why have they kept it buried?
Included with this short story is a sneak peek at the next J. P. Beaumont novel, Proof of Life

love j a jance
J. A. Janice is an exceptional author. Once you’ve started reading, you can’t put it down. J. P. Beaumont is a very likable character. There are a number of her books that have him as the main character. You will want to ready hem all.
For a novella it was an excellent read. It was included in the paperback “Proof of Life”. Wish I had looked before starting …I would have read it first! 🙂 Still good and thanks for being included in paperback.
Great series. Have raised a teen age son to adulthood listening to her books on tape in the car. He now tells me when a new book is available!
MORE MORE MORE, Please. Love it that it takes place where I live and the author knows the area. The dog in the story is even trained where my dog is being trained. Love it.
Have been J A Jance’s, Beaumont series, for years. Started with the first. Live in the Seattle area, I can relate to the places that are written about. Keeps me totally entertained
I think this series is JA Jance’s best. Glad she dug him up even if the detectuve’s getting old.
well developed in a very short format
A good and short read from a favorite author.
I love ALL of J.A. Jance’s books!
I lover JA Jance! Her books never disappoint me.
Faced with investigating “a very cold case”, JPBeaumont “connects-the-dots, always going to sources, talking with people. He figured out a disappearance/murder that no one had done in 30 years! The outcome was the same–the girl who disappeared was dead, but at least her surviving sister “had answers”.
I never met a J A Jance book I didn’t like.
fast good read..
Have read every one in this series and nice to see characters Tauren and situations change
One of Jance’s nouvella’s, sort of an introduction if you will into her new book coming out in Sept. She’s one of my favs, so what more can I say!!!
Like a B movie, interesting but not a page turner.
I started reading Jance with the Brady series, tried to avoid Beau; failed miserably, so now I get the newest as soon as released; which is difficult, because eBooks are getting too expensive. This novella did not disappoint. Already have the next novel marked to purchase when released.
Not one of Jance’s best book, had that rambling center, where the same action is repeated and repeated.
Love all books by this author!
