Very clever rendition of what Alzheimers is like for the victim as the story is told from Alice’s perspective. The impact on the family is also clearly told. A very interesting read.
STILL ALICE by Lisa Genova knocked my socks off! I read all 280 pages in one sitting because I couldn’t stop once I started. The author has a PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University. It is her first book and she proudly self published it in 2007. Reader enthusiasm and momentum garnered a deal with Simon & Schuster and it was re-published in …
Still Alice is a scary book to contemplate reading because it’s about Alzheimer’s Disease – which ranks high on my list of adult-life bogeymen. Believing that the best way to conquer fears is to march through the middle of them, I started reading, and was quickly caught up in the story. A fictional account of a Harvard professor living in …
A scary story for grownups – made the scarier because of the heartbreaking real-life possibilities. As a 65 year old who has already had a few older relatives stricken with dementia called by different names, I see the truth of this fabulously written story. No happy endings here, but a page-turning read.
Alzheimer’s is a frightening prospect for those of us who are of a certain age. This book allowed me to feel what that slipping into darkness might actually be like.
Ripped my heart out and stomped on it
Still Alice is a touching story about a woman’s struggle with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. It is written in the first person giving the reader a unique insight into the mind of someone suffering from this awful disease. I have worked with dementia patients (mostly with Alzheimer’s) and that experience has made me very sympathetic to the later …
A main part of Alice’s identity has always been her intelligence. A Harvard professor teaching cognitive psychology and mentoring graduate students, along with publishing research and leading seminars, she is proud of her abilities. She is an intellectual match for her brilliant husband John, also a Harvard prof. Diagnosed with early-onset …
Wow! This book leaves an imprint on you. I will never be able to understand Alzheimer’s but this book does an amazing job of opening one’s eyes to see a glimpse into the devastation of the disease on the victim and their family and friends. I have a dear friend whose Mother is suffering from this horrendous disease and this book has helped me to …
A must read for all ages. I know of a person w that was dealt this horrible condition just as Alice was in the book. The actress who played Alice in the film met with her to learn personally how this diagnosis has affected her.
Very poignant
This book was amazing. It was an easy read, and I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in just a few days because I was really enjoying it. It is told from Alice’s point of view, so you get to experience what she is going through as she loses more and more of her ability to know what is going on around her.
After I read the book, I watched the …
Good book, good to read if you have someone you know with Alzheimer’s.
A well written tale of a woman with dementia and how the disease affects her and those around her. Very thought provoking and informative.
Much better than the movie. Read it in one sitting; couldn’t put it down.
Superb. A must read, even if you’ve seen the very good movie.
A realistic view of early onset Alzheimer’s. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in this complicated disease.
An insightful book about a woman experiencing early onset Altzheimers disease. It really outlines how the disease progresses from the sufferers point of view. Not so much scary as sad – I can’t stop thinking about it.
Absolutely riveting. I couldn’t put it down. I’m having major book hangover from this. If you want to better understand Alzheimer’s disease or need to increase your empathy for a loved one with AD, this is absolutely the book for you. Even if you just love a good realistic fiction novel, this book is fantastic. Very emotionally charged and well …
