And he damn sure never lets them see the man—or the pain—behind the jokes. Then a one-night … see the man—or the pain—behind the jokes.
Then a one-night stand changes everything.
Career-focused, goal-oriented, and buttoned-down accountant Shelby Drake isn’t the kind of woman who’d usually catch Nolan’s attention, but her soft mouth, hidden curves, and deep sensuality blow his mind. And after only one taste, he wants more.
But Shelby wants nothing more to do with him. And now the radio playboy is on a sensual mission to convince her that opposites really do attract.
Her pleasure is his passion.

“He’d stolen into her dreams and barged into her thoughts.”
I’m really enjoying Man of the Month which is accurately described as a binge reading series. Each book either introduces a new character or gives readers a closer look at one they’ve already met in a previous installment. You can’t help but get attached to them and their varied but perfect mix of colorful characters from all walks of life. I especially enjoyed this one that I’d classify as #OppositesAttract.
Shelby is an accountant. She’s the shy buttoned-up type who finds her comfort in numbers rather than people and rarely lets loose. I originally met her in another book in this series and decided that #DrunkShelby was very entertaining. Of course, her friends would never let her get away with attending a bachelorette party without drinking, right? And wearing her boring business suit with low heels was not appropriate attire for such a celebration, right? Good thing her friend Hannah was able to hook her up with something sexy to wear and provide stilettos to match. Too bad actually walking in them was a challenge sober, and while drunk even less likely.
How fun it was to see the real Shelby with lowered inhibitions and loose lips. Her true thoughts escaping without permission, much to the amusement of her friends and coworkers. Once they became aware of a certain sexy patron’s concentrated attention on their drunk girlfriend, they were very committed to encouraging her to introduce herself. But even drunk that was too much for Shelby’s insecurities to handle. She wanted to go there, but her bravery stalled out when she attempted to talk herself into it. Depending on which way you look at it, gravity was/was not her friend when she ended up stumbling in his direction and he caught her. Their chemistry was so strong I felt the zing through my Kindle when they touched.
Nolan Wood is a local radio show personality who’s celebrity is quite popular with the ladies. He doesn’t shy away from making fun of himself. He’d been the class clown in high school and nothing has changed, he’s still the comedic relief in any situation. He’s very talented at the quick comeback, creating a humorous twist or finding a silly news item to pick apart is the highlight of his day. He’s jaded in the relationship department, but a pro when it comes to one-night-stands. And after watching sexy Shelby in her figure-hugging borrowed dress all night at The Fix, he’s ready to show her that his talented lips are just as effective in the bedroom as in the KIKX radio station.
I loved reading this 4th book in the Man of the Month series and virtually voted for Mr. April among the crowd at The Fix. As she always does, the author left me drooling for the next installment by closing with a teaser for Mr. May. Now that I know who’s being featured I’m bouncing with excitement to get my hands on him/it. The line forms here…
Start Me Up is book 4 in the Man of the Month Series and like all previous books you could read this as a stand-alone, this is Nolan Wood and Shelby Drake’s story.
Shelby wants it all, marriage, kids the whole nine yards and the man she has just started dating ticks all the boxes except the most important one he doesn’t make her feel alive, he doesn’t excite her and he doesn’t make her heart flutter…..During a friends bachelorette party she meets Nolan a morning DJ on the local radio station and the attraction is instant and the chemistry is sizzling but Nolan is only about excitement he doesn’t do relationships and he doesn’t commit. One night of passion has Nolan wanting more but can he convince Shelby he is ready to commit, he does the one thing he is good at every morning on “Mornings with Wood” he uses sexual innuendos to woo her but is it enough I guess you will need to read the book to find out how this love story ends.
I loved Nolan he is funny, hot and very loveable and what can I say about the sweet sassy Shelby apart from these two are perfect for each other. This series is fast becoming one of my favourite reads looking forward to what May has to offer.
4 stars
I purchased a copy of the short steamy novel Start Me Up: A Man Of The Month Novel book 4 by J. Kenner and this review was given freely.
An opposites attract romance that is at times humorous and other times steamy. Radio personality and playboy Nolan has a one night stand with accountant Shelby which changes his views on commitment and hers on what constitutes stability while Author J. Kenner delves again into the topic of bondage. ties book four in with the priorly mentioned drunken bachelorette party and covers the timeline of the last three books.
This is the perfect title for this book. I love reading this book, it’s so fast moving, energizing and a welcomed surprise to find 2 characters that are the total opposite of each other and find out how madly in love they are. They bring out the best in each out and not to mention testes the limits just to spice it up.
Start me Up is the 4th book in the Man of the Month series and is the best book so far. I loved it. Nolan and Shelby were perfect together. They had instant chemistry and they were the best example of opposites attract. These complex characters were well developed and you could not help but love them. This book was short and sweet but it was a fun read. This story touched on the topic of dyslexia and it was skillfully brought into the story. As with the other books, in the end we are introduced to the other couple in the next story. I really enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it.
I dove into this series at the fourth book as they can be read and enjoyed as standalones and this one stood out to me. Nolan is a radio jock who enjoys to taunt and shock his listeners with his sexy talk and no holds barred approach to it. Shelby is the good girl who plays everything on the safe side and doing anything adventurous especially sex is not something she would ever do. When a chance encounter between these two turns into a connection that neither of them can walk away from, it might take Shelby being fearless and brave to not severe their ties. Their story is flirty, sexy, funny and packed full of drama. If you are looking for something a little lighter but thoroughly enjoyable then Start Me Up is the book for you.
I absolutely love this series and Mr. April Nolan Wood, local shock jock. I think I am in love, he is hot, sexy and panty melting. Walk in Shelby Drake has always walked the straight and narrow. She spends one night at The Fix at her friends bachelorette party sees Nolan and spends one hot night that changes everything for her. Can two people so different really find their way to their happily ever after? This story was great and I loved the push and pull emotionally that both Shelby and Nolan are feeling. This definitely one series that I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and who will be Mr. May.
Nolan and Shelby are on fire!! Some of us have a little bit of a prudish thing going on and Shelby is our spirit animal. We can’t all be the outlandish, filter free, fun loving Nolan. But, put the two together and it’s a match made in Heaven! Love the connection between these two and seeing how perfectly the characters fit into the world around them.
I’ve read all the book in this series so far and enjoyed all of them. But I think this one is my favorite so far. There is just something about a flawed hero who fought his way to become the person he is today. It is just irresistible to me. And Nolan is exactly this type of hero. Yes, he is funny, and gorgeous, and so sexy that he can melt your panties with just one look. But he is also so much more than that. And that’s what makes this story so intriguing to me. It simply has a little bit of everything. It is fun and romantic, sexy and hot, and it has just the right dose of heartbreak to make it irresistible.
If you follow the series, you definitely know who Nolan is. You are aware that he is the type of guy who is the life of the party. And in all honesty, he is, but he is also so much more than that. There is a side to him that he shows only to the people closest to him. And if I have to be honest, that’s the side that made him one of my favorite BBFs.
Shelby is also a very intriguing character. She is independent and strong but at the same time she is also quite vulnerable and has her own issues to deal it. At first glance, she and Nolan have nothing in common, but in truth, they fit like two puzzle pieces meant to be.
I am not going to reveal any more from the story but I would say that for me, this is a must read. This is a standalone so you don’t have to read any of the previous books in the series though there are quite a few recurring characters. So don’t waste any time and pick up your copy 🙂 As for me, I can’t wait to read Tyree’s story 😉
This is book 4 from the Man of the Month Series.
Nolan is a well known radio host in Austin. Woman throw themselves at him all the time but he has yet open up his heart to any woman ever since his ex left him.
Shelby is an accountant who thinks she has her life figure out however until she meets Nolan at The Fix on Sixth.
Will Shelby figure out what she wants in her life? Will Nolan find love again?
Must read this outstanding book!
I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest review.
So this series just keeps getting better and better. I love how J. Kenner draws you into the book like you are in there living the words.
Nolan Wood is never short of company when it comes to women, he isn’t looking for the one but when Shelby Drake is his latest one night stand something changes and now he wants more, but will Shelby doesn’t want anything more to do with him will Nolan give up his old ways to get the woman he wants.
Another great read can’t wait for the next man of the month.
My favorite book of the series so far! Loved the chemistry between Shelby and Nolan, although I wasn’t keen on who Shelby was keeping company with at one point in the story. But seeing both of these two work through their individual issues was great, and when Nolan stood up for himself I got the biggest grin on my face. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Start Me Up by J. Kenner is the fourth book in her new 12 book Man of the Month series. Told in dual POV this is where the gruff down-to earth alpha, Nolan, chases the buttoned-up and proper Shelby.
Shelby is not a prude but she is a very fastidious person. She has a plan for her future and Nolan does NOT fit into that plan. But even Shelby cannot deny the immediate attraction between them. Her plan is Alan but after meeting Nolan she is beginning to realize that the sparks she felt with him are nowhere near when she is with Alan.
Nolan has already been there done that with uptight women. At first glance he is ready to write Shelby off as hot but uptight, but upon further (and closer) inspection he realizes that they have a chemistry between them that he has never experienced with anyone else, ever.
Can a crass radio DJ make nice with the prim accountant?
Well-written and well-paced, this was another great read and I’m excited with how each of the upcoming characters are gently weaved into the plots in earlier stories without being obtrusive to the current story. Enjoy!
I was provided a copy of this book so that I could leave an honest review.
Man of the month continues. Love this story. It just keeps getting better. Nolan had me laughing and I enjoyed him. This series leaves me wanting more. Can’t wait for Mr May.
Great job!!!
I have enjoyed Start Me Up so much!! This series is so good and every month I am taken by surprise.
The concept of a book per month is genius but with Start Me up, J.Kenner has outdone herself.
Nolan Wood is a radio DJ, his show is called Morning with Wood!! And wait not only this is so clever but he also wears tee shirt saying “The best mornings have Wood “. I laughed so much at all of this, I love the concept, the idea everything about it!!
Nolan married his “princess” but, it did not last very long when he saw her true colours. Now, years later, he is enjoying life to the full and sex with no strings attached. What he loves the most in his life is his show and his friend Connor… until he met her.
“The girl was a paradox, that was for sure. And one he desperately wanted to solve.”
Shelby is the perfect woman- she does things for a reason, she is the proper girl who works hard and never lets herself go or act spontaneously. When she goes to her friend’s bachelorette party, she has too many drinks and we see another side of her. She meets the hot guy at the bar that is going to turn a little world upside down. With Nolan, she felt something.
“ A one-night stand with a man who’d made her feel things she didn’t know she could feel, and want things she didn’t know she could want.”
Will Nolan get his dark hair paradox? Will Shelby see a future with Nolan?
Start me up was a fun quick read that made me smile!
Start Me Up in book four in this binge-reading series from J. Kenner. For someone who isn’t a fan of quick stories (I need depth in my books), I am really enjoying these quick reads.
Book four is Nolan’s book and we get to delve more into him and his ways. Nolan is a radio DJ and quite filthy one at that. He pushes the boundaries but has so much fun doing it. When the series started, I didn’t really care for Nolan when we first met him, but I enjoyed getting to know him more in this book.
Shelby is the exact opposite of Nolan. She is career-driven, shy and definitely more introverted compared to Nolan. She finds comfort in her job and rarely ever lets her hair down. So when she and her girlfriends are out for a bachelorette party, they force her out of her comfort zone for once.
I enjoyed these two from the start. From their initial meeting, to their bickering and the challenges they faced with the new relationship, to eventually their heated desires. There was no denying the chemistry between these two. They may be complete opposites, but they were able to help each other out in so many ways. I loved that I went from not really caring about this story (again, Nolan wasn’t a character of mine) to loving every interaction between Nolan and Shelby.
Another great read in this series. Looking forward to the next one!
And J Kenner has another winner in Start Me Up. These characters are a delight to read about and I think my favorite part was reading about them growing together. They each had their insecurities to work through and I loved the journey. This book went quickly (too quickly) and I loved all the sexy humor written from a morning DJ standpoint and just the humor in general. And the one thing that fuels my love for reading is watching how characters grow into who they are supposed to be which J Kenner does a great job in this one.
I LOVE this series!
Nolan dropped out of high school and is working his dream job. He’s the host of radio talk show Mornings With Wood. Nolan’s not looking for anything serious and doesn’t have to worry about pursuing women – they come to him. That is, until he meets Shelby. Shelby doesn’t even know who he is or his radio station.
Nolan and Shelby have many differences, as Shelby points out. Do opposites really attract?
It was refreshing to read a book that the male character was pursuing the female… go NOLAN! Love this series and can’t wait for MORE!
