I have read both novels in this boxset and found that once I started reading, I was unable to put the books down. The plots are well written, witty and romantic, but not without heartache and pain.
Songbird: In an “opposites attract” love story, feisty Ellie Stone is only just keeping it together as she multi-tasks through life. Her one-liner fortune cookie quotes keep her afloat as she stumbles through each day. However, her passion for music gives her life and joy and brings healing to her soul. Getting the newly established Southport Music Festival off the ground brings meaning and determination to Ellie’s life and she gives it everything she has. In the process she is also shaking her abusive ex-boyfriend loose, resulting in her randomly meeting the nerdy Mason who is similarly obsessed with music, even though all other aspects of his life are well controlled and orderly. Though Ellie’s life is a mess and she is frightened of committing to a new relationship, she nevertheless remains true to herself and one cannot help but cheer her on, trusting that she would not make the mistake of going backwards, instead of embracing the future. Mason, on the other hand, infuriated me in the way in which he blew hot and cold, as Ellie proved to be more than he could handle at times. In some ways, this book scraped on my emotions as I felt Ellie’s pain and rejection. However, I found myself getting excited as she began to reach her goals to attain her dream.
Moondance: An emotional roller coaster, one is taken on the ride with Ellie as she battles through the issues that have plagued her all her life. Experience has shown that people initially go into fight or flight mode in order to survive a painful or stressful youth. Ellie displays all the attributes of a survivor with her somewhat aggressive mode of coping. However, with Mason’s gentle humour and wisdom, she slowly lets go and begins to relax into their relationship. Their funny and cute relationship is uniquely their own, one that has evolved out of their opposite personalities. However, it is their very different temperaments that bring out the best in each other. The story is romantic and well written, with underlying life lessons we could all benefit from.
Both novels are standalones and have very satisfactory conclusions. I received a copy of this boxset as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
In Songbird, Ellie and Mason meet at a Boxley Brothers concert where her abusive selfish ex-boyfriend tries to force her to give him her extra ticket and she gives it to Mason instead. She doesn’t think she’s good enough for him after her ex manipulated her and put her down. As the managing editor of The Southport Anchor, he wonders if she’s using him to get press for Stars Over Southport Music Festival that she’s helping put together. But they bond over their love of music and nerdy jokes.
Moondance picks up Ellie and Mason’s story one year into their relationship. Ellie’s best friend is going away to school and Mason wants her to move in with him, but she’s afraid to give him that control after what happened with her ex. He finally gets her to agree to move in and she finds out she’s pregnant. Her mother always resented getting pregnant with Ellie, so she thinks it’s the worst thing that could happen and that Mason will be so angry with her. But he’s actually really sweet when she tells him. The ending to this book was pretty sweet too.
I love this boxset, these are two of my favorites written by Caroline Tate. I stumbled across this author one day and the blurb for Songbird got me so I grabbed it and have been a fan since!! You can’t help falling for the characters in these books, that’s for sure!!
