“The summer before I turned ten was idyllic–until August 3, 1970. It perfectly describes a time when I thought the world was safe and good things lasted forever…” Christy Award Winner! Nine-year-old Abby McAndrews has just experienced her greatest loss, and in its wake, her family is unraveling with guilt, grief, and anger. Her father, Reverend McAndrews, cannot return to the pulpit … McAndrews, cannot return to the pulpit because he has more questions than answers. Her older brother Matt’s actions speak louder than the words he needs to confess, as he acts out in dangerous ways. Her mother tries to hold her grieving family together, but when Abby’s dad refuses to move on, the family is at a crossroads.
Stars in the Grass, set in a small Midwestern town in 1970, is an uplifting novel that explores a family’s relationships and resiliency. Abby’s heartbreaking remembrances are balanced by humor and nostalgia as her family struggles with–and ultimately celebrates–life after loss.

As a parent hard to read at times, but a poignant look at how loss affects this family and how they move forward.
a SAD STORY WITH A GOOD ENDING.
I read a lot of books, and this book makes it to the top of my most loved books. Wonderful writing, wonderful story. I could not put it down.
A very sweet story of love & heartache. A family that a lot of people could relate to.
I wonder if the author had experienced the loss of a child? The emotions were very developed. I felt a part of the story.
Sad, but beautifully told
Inspiring story of how a family deals with grief and finds strength in their love and faith in God. Well written and thoughtful. 5 stars.
Very good
Excelkent, u need to read, its, hard, but great
I liked this book. It felt true to life with the exception of mom moving next door. It kept me involved and I did feel for the family and was so relieved when the father finally came around.
The young narrator identifies herself as a lover of words, and from the outset we can tell that the same is true of the author. The story line is not very dynamic, but the reason for reading is to hear the storytelling, which is done thoughtfully and artfully. Accompany a family dealing with the emotional resonations of a deep blow that opens the book.
It showed how a family got through a tragic death of a family member with God’s help! I highly recommend this book for anyone going through grief!
this is the best book I have read in a long time. . . Look forward to other work by this author
A good book to let loose with grief. Gets you thinking and a little more aware.
A good read, but sad.
I definitely recommend this book even though parts of it made me cry. It seemed very real, like your heart broke for some of the characters at times and wanted to celebrate at other times. Can’t say enough good things about this wonderful book!
Sad but was written so well. It had you thinking how you would handle a child’s death. It was also interesting because it was written as to how a 9 year old would see life after the death of her little brother and what it did to her family.
Well written story of dealing with loss .
Although dealing with tragedy, this book was ,spot on ,what a pastor’s family goes through in dealing with their church family. Excellent read.
This book was amazing as it dealt with a difficult subject matter. I loved the characters and how each one experienced their own grief. This is a well-told story of love, loss, and redemption.
