Leo Borlock follows the unspoken rule at Mica Area High School: don’t stand out–under any circumstances! Then Stargirl arrives at Mica High and everything changes–for Leo and for the entire school. After 15 years of home schooling, Stargirl bursts into tenth grade in an explosion of color and a clatter of ukulele music, enchanting the Mica student body. But the delicate scales of popularity … suddenly shift, and Stargirl is shunned for everything that makes her different. Somewhere in the midst of Stargirl’s arrival and rise and fall, normal Leo Borlock has tumbled into love with her. In a celebration of nonconformity, Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the fleeting, cruel nature of popularity–and the thrill and inspiration of first love.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was wonderful.

He observes her, keenly aware of how she’s sinking into his skin, changing those around her. Some …
I found the characters pretty annoying. I also felt like it was trying really hard to be insightful but then falling short when it really came down to it.
A friend told me that I should read this book (and it’s sequel) because she thought I’d enjoy them. Boy, was she right. I enjoy the enigma of a girl who just doesn’t seem to fit into any one mold. Someone who cares more about helping other people than about what people think about her. I think this book would be great required reading for middle …
Who is more memorable, the high school queen bee who called all the shots, or the abstract thinker who challenged our idea of normal?
See Stargirl from the perspective of a teenager who must choose whether he prefers the love and attention of a girl with unfailing compassion, or the acceptance of conforming students of Mica High.
