Fast-paced adventure, found family, intrigue, and enemies-to-lovers romance combine in an action-packed young adult novel for fans of Firefly. Solara Brooks needs a fresh start, someplace where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. Still, off-world travel doesn’t come cheap, and Solara is left with no choice but to indenture … with no choice but to indenture herself in exchange for passage to the outer realm. She just wishes it could have been to anyone besides Doran Spaulding, the rich, pretty-boy quarterback who made her life miserable in school. The tables suddenly turn when Doran is framed for conspiracy on Earth, and Solara cons him into playing the role of her servant on board the Banshee. Given the price on both Doran and Solara’s heads, it may just be the safest place in the universe.

A very entertaining and quick read for me. A nice balance of teen problem solving and romance. Good world building and full of action.
Starflight is YA science fiction at its best. Solara Brooks needs a ticket to the outer realm, and old classmate/nemesis Doran Spaulding is happy to supply her with just such a ticket if she agrees to serve as his indentured for the trip. The tables are turned when a conspiracy finds Doran framed for crimes back on earth and hunted by authorities. The two board the Banshee, Doran now playing the role as servant, and become embroiled in a swashbuckling tale of piracy, romance and space opera action! If you loved Joss Whedon’s Firefly, you’ll adore Starflight! There are lovable rogues, loads of intrigue, and a plot that keeps you on your toes.
Verdict: A must read science fiction adventure.
This book was a fun romp through the galaxy!
Don’t expect there to be a lot of sci-fi in this novel, it’s pretty light. It does have more romance than I expected though. Luckily, it’s not an overdone inst-love or love-triangle! However, it is a promiscuous wealthy jerk, which I also feel the “rouge” is overdone too.
It is action-packed. She’s a convicted criminal tying to make a new life for herself in the dangerous outer realm. It’s just harder to get there than she thought. She ends up on a small old ship with an equally old captain, a kleptomaniac kind hearted man, a flirty younger guy, and his friend with secrets, along with the wealthy rude guy. Somehow along the way, they become the family she has never had.
There were a couple small plot holes and the romance was at times a little cliche.
**There was language, many sexual references, non descriptive sex, talk of sexual body parts, heavy make out sessions, etc. I would definitely put a warning flag on this one for most teenagers.
Meh! I didn’t really like this one all that much. It definitely got more interesting towards the end because that’s when all the interesting things happen. I felt that a lot of this book was a little boring and focused too much on Doran and Solara’s growing relationship, which was obvious that a romance would bloom between them. It took too long for certain things to be revealed and I didn’t connect all that much with the crew. I even decided to kinda hate a couple of them for actions they made.
I’m still not sure what direction this book will go in because its still unclear what the author wants to happen. Not enough gets revealed. Its just tiny pieces of information from here and there that must connect, but is not making that much more interested in the story. But I can tell you all about Doran and Solara’s relationship though.
I will say that despite Doran being a huge asshole at the beginning of this book I think his character grew the most in this book. I found that I really liked him not long into this story. Solara was just ok and I didn’t really like how she acted most of the time.
I’m not in a rush to finish this duet, but I probably will at some point. I just feel a little disappointed with this book. So that’s why it gets my just ok 3 star rating.
In the mood for something futuristic, I picked up the first book of this series (Starflight) several weeks ago. It tells of an orphan girl who’s good with mechanics but has gotten in trouble with the law and now wears a tatoo marking her as a trouble-maker. In an attempt to better her life, she decides to indenture herself as a servant so she can get a ride to the outer ring of planets where, with a little hard work, people can support themselves on their own land. No one will hire her until she runs across the snotty, spoiled rich boy who used to pick on her in school. Things get exciting when he realizes she’s been marked as a criminal and tries to fire her. I couldn’t put the book down. The 2nd book follows two of the characters from the first book as they finally find a way to be together after fighting rebels, the mafia and an evil husband. The only complaint I have is that the author did a nice job of introducing all the characters in the first book, but in the second, the story revolved very tightly around just two of them (not the main characters in the first book), making the other characters just accessories. Still liked it though.
Loved it
