I can’t even begin to comprehend the research that went into Star-Crossed by Anna Markland. This is an amazing history lesson and well as a wonderful love story. This historical time in the 1100s is one of my favorites and is described with such depth and detail and her characters come alive. Oh this book is amazing. It has enemies, family love, hate, madness, abuse, deception, cruelty, death, grief, innocence, imprisonment, torture, nunneries, coming war, weddings and love at first sight. I highly recommend you read this book or any of
Anna Markland’s books. She is truly a very gifted and talented writer.
Travel back in time to 1100 England with Robert de Montbryce and Dorianne de Giroux in a story like no other.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
The continuing saga of the Montbryce family.
This story begins on August 2nd 1100, when William Rufuss , the King of England, is killed while hunting. Ms. Markland drops us into the story, using the Montbryce family that we have met previously as the vehicle through which she tells her story. We see how the coming conflict between the 2 remaining sons of William the Conquerer could have affected the Norman families that had come to England and fought with him.
The multi-generational feud between the Montbryce family and Giroux family continues into the current generation. This time, it is complicated by the Montbryce heir, Robert, falling for the daughter of the current de Giroux patriarch, Dorianne. We watch as the young couple are torn apart by her family, she is abused by a severe beating by her brother Pierre, who then packs her off to an isolated Abbey. Finally, she is rescued and marries Robert, and one thinks that perhaps they will live HEA.
Unfortunately for them, the war has drastic consequences for them, requiring rescue of both by Robert’s brothers. By the end of the book, the war is over, Henry having won, and the Montbryce brothers are happily married, but missing their loving parents who died during the course of the story.
I appreciate the way Ms. Markland uses history as a framework around which she builds her story. Although this is not the first book in the series, there are sufficient references to applicable events/people in the past so that the reader has a deeper appreciation of the significance of what is happening. Therefore, it could be read alone.
There are scenes between married or soon-to-be married couples where there is detailed sexual activity discussed, making it an adult book that some may find uncomfortable.
I love the saga and eagerly await the next volume of this anniversary edition.
What can I say, Anna Markland just keeps on writing amazing stories! And this one just touches all the feels on every level!
Dorianne Giroux’s family has nothing but hatred and vengeance for their rival the Montbryces their families have been feuding for ages. Unbeknownst to her she meets Robert de Montbryce they meet and fall in love. Determined to save her from a forced life in a nunnery, he tries to rescue her but his attempts are foiled and he’s unjustly imprisoned. But their love truly is strong and he vows to be reunited with the woman who has stolen his heart.
I loved this! I believe that this was my favourite of all the Montbryce stories, it had plenty of intrigue heart wrenching emotional turmoil. Vengeful enemies, betrayal, it was so vividly portrayed that every scene was felt, I highly recommend this series, and every other book that Anna Markland has written.
I recieved a complimentary copy, this is my honest unbiased opinion.
The things we do for love, this is such a tear-jerker. This couple is tough as nails, their love is tested to the limit but they are not quitters. Dorraine loves her family but does her family love her, she is a little naive but soon matures, the hard way. Robert has it going on but he is not conceited just determined, loves his family. Vengeance and jealously reigns in the land and the enemy is patiently waiting for a chance. Every free moment I had, my face was in this book and couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. Good can win over evil and love can be everlasting, this family is a great example of that.
Another amazing tale in The Montbryce Legacy Series. This time our heroine Dorianne Giroux has grown up with her family who are filled with hatred and vengeance for the Montbryce’s over an old family feud. With the death of the King, the Montbryce’s are on the move to pull together and protect their holdings and make a unified decision on who they will support for the new King. As fate would have it, Robert de Montbryce meets Dorianne when she journey’s outside her home bound for life of a nun. But she does not know who Robert is at first and the story takes off with him trying to rescue who from the life she is being pushed into by her family. Can the two ever find love with Robert’s family being the enemy of Dorianne’s family?
An emotional read with many twist and turns with a great hero and heroine who only need to find their happy ever after. Although part of a series, this can be read as a stand alone book. But you will fall in love with this series, so I would recommend them all!!
Another great read from Ms. Markland. An emotional weaving of romance, history, intrigue and betrayal in a story you won’t want to put down.
