As a historical fiction, this just added to all the information I already knew of that time in history, in Scotland.
I enjoy historical fiction
This is how I like to learn history – well-researched historical fiction filled with developed characters and interesting life events. The story revolves around the McDonnell family in the Orkney Islands during the Industrial Revolution’s beginnings and the potato famine. It spins into a series in order to follow the survival choices of the …
A fun read.
I stayed up late, hating to put down the story. An historical novel so compelling, I plan on reading the sequels. To the author: please use further and farther correctly. In an otherwise perfect story, this drives me nuts. I’m envious of the author’s talent.
Great read..highly reccomend it !
It was a realistic look at the extremely hard life in the Irish history. You will want to read the next book to follow the other characters from the book.
A good story based on actual happenings in Scotland. Gives a good description of the Highland clearances but with real life situations rather than a dry historical story. I would not have known that the author is American other than she calls autumn as Fall. Otherwise was a good story, captivating with real characters.
The book was fantastic…until the end. It ended too abruptly, with no closure for the characters. I wanted to see what happened when they each got to their destination. I feel like I’ve been cheated!
Captivating!
This book has a lot of things going for it. It’s easy to read, unpredictable, action-packed and has great characters. Once I started reading, it was hard to put down.
Set in the Orkney Islandsin the 1840’s, this book’s plot meanders here and there without ever focusing on one person’s story. Instead the fishing village is itself the main character. Similarly, the various threads of plot and characters are not brought to a satisfying conclusion. This book is not meant to stand alone.
I do not like to read a “book” that is really only an installment, so I can’t give this more than 3 stars.
I appreciate that the language was clean. No f- bombs. It was fun to Google the places and historical characters mentioned to see if they really were real and ‘accurate’ ish. It was a fun read.
I have been reading more historical fiction lately, I love learning about what happened in the past and reading well researched stories makes it easy!
Not the happy ending I wanted.
Well written. Historical fiction. The right mix of tragedy and tenaciousness.
Prose was very cumbersome.
I normally don’t like books that don’t end but this was good and I’ll continue the series.
Gave 5 stars because I was intrigued with this story and couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read more from this author.
