Standing His Ground has blown me away. I knew it would be explosive because of the sparks this couple has thrown off since day one but man… It was SO. DAMN. GREAT. So much depth, all sorts of feels, such thoughtful storytelling… Definitely one of my favorite Jamie Begley books to date!
Greer, Greer, Greer… I was already crushing on you before but now I am head over heels in love with you! You are #2 only to Cash in my book! You were sweet, charming, romantic, protective & clever but the most AMAZING part was that you were all of those things without losing your famous a**hole persona. You were still you & that was straight-up sexy. But I am so sorry about what happens after you use your power… *zips lips*
Holly, woman… LOVED what you & Diamond started! My heart broke for you with every insult & sneer that was slung your way but I admired the way you dealt with it all. You were so strong, caring & selfless. I loved your relationship with Logan & when you decided to go all in with Greer. You balanced each other out & it was beautiful & fun to see your story unfold.
There were so many memorable scenes in this book! The house meeting, the ugly cry (OMG, I was devastated!), the way Greer took care of Diane & the conversation Greer had with Knox at the end were all definitely highlighted in my kindle but the very BEST ones were the out-of-body experience Holly & Greer felt in the field of daisies & the barn scene with the whole Porter family. The field scene gave me goosebumps; being so sexy, magical & meaningful. And that barn scene… I LOVED how therapeutic it was for EVERYONE.
Have to admit… I was a bit irked that daisies were the flower of choice because I associate them with one of my least favorite characters, Bliss, & her daisy chain but I’m choosing to replace the bad memories with the good ones because Greer & Holly’s daisies were fantastic!
Although it was hard to leave some loose ends lying around, I’m excited to find out how things are going to play out between the Porters, Hayeses, Colemans, Curt Dawkins & Luke Baxter in Claiming His Enemy. (At least I think they’re all linked together somehow because of events that happened in this book.) I feel lots of trouble brewing!
Very much looking forward to the next installment in this massive Jamie Begley saga! Not sure if it’ll be Rider’s Revenge (the prologue of which was included at the end of this book) but I really hope it is! 🙂
Danger Will Robinson, Jamie Begley’s collection is on Kindle Unlimited, and like a lemming I’ve gone down The Last Riders hole. I am happy to report there are no overly descriptive sex scenes with other women in this one. Baby steps.
Color me surprised when after reading Keeping What’s His: Tate where the hero needs to be neutered this is a three star almost four. Greer is hysterical!
In Standing His Ground, Begley presents the worst Porter brother which is saying something as they are all pretty terrible. He shot a man in cold blood in the last book which the villain deserved, but it took a lot of lying to get the unrepentant Greer off the hook. Greer the hero is absolutely awful in so many ways: mean, rude crude, social unacceptable not to mention obnoxious AND and cheap as hell. He was also hysterically gruff, protective, slightly mystical, and when he admits his feelings I fell hook, line and sinker. He’s still rude crude, social unacceptable not to mention obnoxious AND and cheap but has left mean behind.
The heroine combines meek and strong in some ways and puts up with his horribleness because she wants to be near the H’s nephew, and she’s in love with the big lug. Despite his cruel words to her he’s watched out for her and she appreciates his family loyalty. You either buy it or not.
I laughed and/or chuckled at some of his antics once he decided to not be so cruel.
He informs his confused family it is time for him to marry…
“Fine.” Greer rose from his chair to walk back and forth across the room as everyone stared at him closely. It wasn’t often that Greer was at a loss for words. “I’ve decided it’s time for me to get married.”
You could hear a pin drop in the room. The only sound that could be heard was Logan playing his video game.
Rachel was the first one to find her voice. “Please don’t tell us you’re marrying Diane.”
“Maybe. I haven’t made my mind up yet.”
His three choices are his skanky unfaithful off/on girlfriend, a woman he barely knows and his secret email buddy (the heroine). His reasoning for his selections is a little sketchy.
**************************************
“Greer rolled his eyes as if Tate was the one being ridiculous. “There are three women I can see myself married to. I wanted your advice as to who I should pick. I can see you’re not going to be any help.”
“Who’s your second choice?”
“Jo.”
“Jo?” Rachel asked, shocked.
“You know, Jo Turner.”
“I know who she is. I’m friends with her.”
“I know. I figured you could put in a good word for me.”
Cash put a restraining hand on Rachel’s leg. Holly watched as she tried to control her temper.
“I didn’t even know you were dating her. I’m going to kick your ass if you’ve been messing around with Diane and dating Jo at the same time.”
“Cool down. I haven’t asked her out yet.”
“I don’t understand …”
“I’m attracted to her, she’s pretty, and she has that new tow truck. Shit like that comes in handy.”
*************************************
“That leaves the other two. Rachel, you talk to Jo and feel out if she would be willing to go out with Greer.”
“You want me to be the one to talk her into going out with him?” Rachel’s hair practically stood on end.
“You want him married to Diane?”
“I’ll call her tonight.”
The heroine has been his unknown dating correspondent and there are a couple of surprises I don’t want to spoil in the romance. They get together and there is a sea change in the H’s treatment of the heroine. His negotiation for her engagement ring is pretty entertaining as “shame” is not a concept he experiences and his ability to bargain comes in handy.
Shade, Beth, Lily, Viper, Winter and an unbelievably reformed Cash make brief appearances and they there are in the context of putting the H in a better light. The aforementioned verbal abuse by the H and a sad fail of the suspense/murder portion of the story were fails for me. However, the slight mystical element the Porter family has which Greer uses to great effect, and some incredibly romantic sweet gestures by Greer outweighed the negatives for me.
There are a few moments that are heartbreaking [Rachel suffers a miscarriage (hide spoiler)], but the story pulls through for a HEA.
As much as I hated Tate’s book, I want to read the last, Claiming the Enemy: Dustin just to get more of Greer and Holly.
I have waited for Greer and Holly’s story and it did not disappoint! Greer has a rough exterior, but has the biggest heart. The steamy scenes that were so worth it! I read it in a couple of days. This book is definitely worth it!
