The #1 New York Times bestselling, “must-read” (San Francisco Chronicle), “amazingly timely and stunningly accessible” (Jacqueline Woodson) exploration of race and racism from award-winning, beloved authors Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi This is NOT a history book. This is a book about the here and now. A book to help us better understand why we are where we are. A book about race. The … us better understand why we are where we are.
A book about race.
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.
Through a gripping, fast-paced, and energizing narrative written by beloved award-winner Jason Reynolds, this book shines a light on the many insidious forms of racist ideas–and on ways readers can identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their daily lives.

“There will come a time when we will love humanity, when we will gain the courage to fight for an equitable society for our beloved humanity, knowing, intelligently, that when we fight for humanity, we are fighting for ourselves.”
This book is powerful and amazing. I have so many thoughts and feelings from this book that it is hard to articulate how much it impacted me. I haven’t read the original book, Stamped from the Beginning, but I definitely plan to read it now. There is so much history that I don’t know because it was never taught or was glossed over during my upbringing and education.
“To know the past is to know the present. To know the present is to know yourself.”
This is a book that I believe every white person should read. This book articulates the struggles that Blacks have gone through since they were first brought to this country and are still struggling with today. As the blurb says, this isn’t a history book, but it does give important facts from history that are still impacting people today. We need to know this history so we can do something about it, especially here in the U.S.
Also, I listened to the audiobook of this and Reynolds does an amazing job narrating. I highly recommended this audiobook, especially if you struggle to read nonfiction books.
I’m reading this book with my 10-year-old, to continue learning about racism and our white privilege. It has prompted so many interesting conversations and I am glad we have the chance to talk about these things. We hope to continue learning how to be better allies.
Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You was an absolutely spectacular read. It deals with very complex topics and makes them understandable. Excellent book, I will read this one again.
Reynolds writes this book in a way easy to digest. It really opened my eyes!
This is one of those eye opening “must read” books for both kids and adults! An utterly accessible easy read (with “dad jokes”!) delving into the history of racism. This “not history history book” as the author describes it, highlights how the construct of race has been used to oppress those without power and enhance power for those that already have it. It classifies people into 3 categories: Segregationists (aka racists), Assimilationists (black people would be fine if they just act more white) and Antiracists (something we all need to be).
I borrowed this book from the library, but it’s so important and impactful, that I’m buying a copy for my shelf.
I hope others feel the same.
Officially a YA book but a must read for anyone looking to learn.
A must read for every American!

I listened to this book with my tween daughter. It was still a bit over her head, which is why I chose to have us listen to it together so that I could answer her questions and help her to navigate the material. It opened up a lot of discussion in our family and helped us to reevaluate and reexamine things through a new lens.
Jason Reynolds is an absolutely phenomenal narrator and author. I loved how he broke the chapters and sections down into digestable chunks. You could feel all the emotion in his narration and his timing and delivery made the statements even more powerful. He was able to infuse humor into the narration as well and I appreciated the levity. There’s a lot of information to process and found it was a wonderful jumping off point into exploring the events and people mentioned in greater detail. The book is geared towards teens, but adults can learn a great deal as well.
*I voluntarily listened to an audiobook listening copy. Many thanks to Libro.fm and Hachette Audio*
