Ally Marshall isn’t just a wolf shifter—she’s a Seer. But a girl doesn’t exactly need special powers to know that Derren Hudson despises her entire kind. Disdain practically rolls off the Beta of the Mercury Pack…disdain mixed with a healthy dose of desire. And no matter how much the ruggedly handsome male appeals to her, this is one call of the wild she’s determined to ignore. After one betrayal … betrayal too many, Derren doesn’t have much use for Seers—except for Ally. Forced into acting as her protector, he finds himself intensely and passionately drawn to the woman who incites his primal instinct to claim. And when enemies target the pack, Ally’s gift may be just what the Mercury Pack needs. Can he put his distrust aside, or will he force himself to turn his back on the one woman who makes his inner beast howl?

The Mercury Pack is kind of a spin off series to The Phoenix Pack series since we were introduced to most of these characters in some of the other books. But you can read this as a complete standalone.
In Spiral of Need we meet Ally who is not only a wolf shifter but a seer too. Most people would think being a seer and seeing the future is a blessing but sometimes it can be a curse too. Like when a tragic event occurs and Ally doesn’t see it coming. Not only does she blame herself, others do too. When Ally finds herself in need of a protector she finds herself stuck with Derren. Who just so happens to despise her “kind”.
Derren hates seers. He has been screwed over by them before and is damn sure not gonna trust the one he finds himself protecting now. But that doesn’t stop this all consuming need he feels when he’s around Ally.
Like all of Suzanne Wright books, we have a sassy, kickass heroine and a domineering, badass alpha hero. Add in a whole lot of fun banter, suspense, lust, action, & vengeance, you have yourself a book you don’t wanna put down!
Ms Wright is a new-to-me author, one I’m thrilled to discover.
Her compelling characters and a world I found easy to sink into kept me coming back for more whenever I had a spare moment. A fabulous start to what is likely to be a great series.
Derren Hudson is a Beta of the Mercury Pack, whose only loyalty is to his Pack. He doesn’t get close to most and is somewhat of a loner. When an old acquaintance contacts Derren for a favor he balks, his acquaintance wants him to go get Ally Marshall a shifter from another pack, but what has him hesitating is she is a Seer. Derren hates Seer’s, if it wasn’t for his former pack Seer his life wouldn’t have been torn apart and betrayed. Derren believes that all Seer’s are liars out to craft whatever tale for self serving reasons.
Ally is not happy with her pack, her old boyfriend found his mate and while she is truly happy for him his new mate is doing her best to getting her shunned. Ally doesn’t have time to deal with her and her latest ambush to put Ally in a negative standing with the pack has her wondering what to do. She doesn’t expect Derren to show up to take her to another pack for protection until her closest friend can come protect her. Ally realizes she is going to be hated by the Mercury Pack, they have had issues with another Seer. The problem is Ally is not one to create drama, if she sees something she is honest about what she sees.
Derren is drawn to Ally, she confuses him with how she acts and when an action has Ally protecting his pack, Derren realizes she can be trusted. Someone is targeting his pack and it seems Ally, can he protect her while exploring why he is so drawn to her?
Amazing, should have picked this up so much sooner. I thought this was wonderful, loved the characters and the way the story had me guessing how the story would unfold. The one terrific thing about this authors books is they are always different and filled with characters who are unique. Terrific.
Seeing the future of Mercury Pack
While I’m not sure if Derren is one of my favorite wolves, I really liked Ally and their story. I loved that Derren for the most part doesn’t hold back from her once he decides that he needs her in his life, and that when she talks to him about his prejudices against Seers, he listens.
I really, really liked this one! Ally and Darren were great together and their romance was steamy and swoony.
This whole series is awesome
I don’t know how I missed reading this first book in the series. I thought I had read everything. It was actually a nice surprise because I wasn’t quite ready to be done with the series. Even though I had read about this couple in the later books, their story was not spoiled for me. I still enjoyed learning their beginning.
There was the usual resistance to the bond that this series is known for, but it was actually pretty mild, especially since Derren was so against seers. I liked the take on the misunderstood heroine and I really liked how Ally handled all that miss-understanding. She handled it mostly with maturity and I could respect that.
Since it didn’t take long for Derren to recognize Ally’s awesomeness, I ended up liking him just as much. Especially since he had no problems with pursing her. Plus, his protectiveness and possessiveness is what I like to read in a hero.
This was a great start to the Mercury Pack even though I already know how it all ends.
This was my first read by Suzanne Wright, but it definitely won’t be my last. She may become my go-to for wolf shifter books.
Spiral of Need is book one of the Mercury Pack series. I haven’t read any of the previous series its connected to, and I don’t feel as if I’m missing some important information that would have made this book make sense. However, it does make me want to read the previous series just to know even more.
Ally is a firecracker. I like that she’s fierce and able to protect herself, but is willing to take a little help when she needs to. I also found her wit and sarcastic humor endearing.
Derren is a stoic and protective type. They both have tragedy in their pasts that help them understand and bond with each other. Super steamy and well written, I’m looking forward to reading more from the author.
Audible. Available via KU + audio included.
This is the first book in the Mercury Pack series, but this series is intertwined with Wright’s Phoenix Pack series. I wouldn’t start here – reading/listening to books 1-4 of the Phoenix Pack will give you background on the huge number of characters as well as how they fit together. Starting with Feral Sins. Both series are incredibly formulaic (I think she might just copy/paste the anal conversation for each book), yet somehow it works for me as I’ve purchased them all in audio and have listened multiple times. They’re funny, emotional, sweet, s-e-x-y as heck, irreverent, and sometimes downright corny.
Spiral of Need is another favorite of mine. It was nice to get to know Derren (introduced in Carnal Secrets, Phoenix #3) better as well as the introduction of Ally. Wright expands on the abilities of seers in a way that benefits the packs and creates a unique twist to dealing with their enemies. A few more secondary characters are introduced and we get to know other pack members better.
Jill Redfield continues to be AMAZING. This is a HUGE cast of characters, male and female, young and old ~ and even though the packs are expanding and merging, she *still* manages to give them all unique voices and characteristics. You know exactly who is talking at any given time. I also like that the characters are the same throughout the whole series – which makes it easy to binge the audios.
Spiral of Need by Suzanne Wright was my first book from this author and I had a fabulous time in the company of Allie, Derren and his Mercury Pack and their friends from the Phoenix Pack. What I really enjoyed was Allie. A wolf shifter and also a Seer and empath. She was such a strong heroine. I couldn’t get enough of her personality and her dominance. Derren a wolf shifter and also very dominating knew how to tackle Allie. Their connection was palpable and I had so much fun whenever they were around one another. They’re both dominating and claiming each other and them mating was seriously hot as hell. The other pack members were great too especially Shayla and Roni. I’m definitely going to read their books and I’m starting from the beginning cause this author and her writing style has got me addicted.
4 Mark Me Stars
3.5 stars. Ally’s attitude was brilliant.
I didn’t realise I had read this author before until writing this review.
Have only read book one of the Phoenix pack yet so not up on who everyone is but I still enjoyed this.
Pleasant read that whiled away an evening at home.
Ally was smart, kickass and likeable. Her attitude was just so feisty. I just wish she had been given more vindication and apology from her old pack. I felt she was not given the grovelling apology she deserved.
Derren was okay once he got his head on straight. Felt sorry for his past and glad he got vindicated in the end.
The idiocy with the female Beta from the old pack was fun and loved how it played out, though I did feel sorry for Zeke. Hopefully he may get a good mate one day.
Did like the fact there was no mucking around, punishment was dealt with swiftly.
I am going to read the rest of the Phoenix Pack then come back to this series.
Read through KU.
I really enjoyed reading Ms. Suzanne’s books. I can definitely say that all her books are a must read. She gives interesting plot and characters that you will love.
Like Derren & Ally, I enjoyed reading their journey together. How fierce Ally is and Derren’s protective streak.
Looking forward to reading this series and can’t wait to read more.
Spiral of Need is my first novel written by Suzanne Wright, and it was better than I expected. The hero and heroine are very well drawn. They work perfectly together and lift each other up. The outside antagonists weren’t really scary, just bitchy, and a lot of the plot was confusing to me until it was all explained at the end.
My favorite part: The sex scenes are unbelievable and worth the cost of the book all on their own. Hot doesn’t begin to cover it.
My least favorite part: So many characters! I guess the author is stacking the cast with characters for future books, but there were so many names with no distinctions or personalities attached, I actually forgot the hero’s and heroine’s names during the last half of the book.
Amazing all the way around. I very much enjoyed the fact that some of the characters were already mated. Some books start off with no one mates, or a select few older mates. This book has younger pack members already mated, and the author managed to tell their stories(or some details of some) along the way without taking away from the main couple.
The story line flowed very smoothly between times, places, and people point of views. And the characters were all greatly detailed and the emotions from them are easily felt throughout.
Book well written and I’m on to read the next part of the series
Although ‘Spiral of need’ is the first book in ‘The Mercury pack’ series I would recommend that you read ‘The Phoenix pack’ series first or at least read the third book’ Carnal secret’ first. Because that book tells the story of Nick and Shaye, who are the alpha pair of the Mercury pack. In that story you also get to see how the Mercury Pack is formed. I read the first three books of ‘The Phoenix pack’ series before reading this one and I’m glad that I did because both series are connected with each other.
If you have read ‘Carnal secret’ you will remember Derren, the wolf shifter who stubbornly followed Nick around. I just loved his character in that book so I was very looking forward to reading his book.
‘Spiral of need’ is a great story, it was everything that I hoped for. I liked the fact that we also got to see the wolf shifters of The Phoenix pack in this story. The story is told from both POV’s. Although both Ally and Derren’s wolves were dominant, there was a good balance between them. Derren’s character is very suspicious of everything and everyone but once you have his loyalty he would do everything for you. He was just the man/shifter that Ally needed. It was wonderful to see that even when he wasn’t sure of her, he still protected her. Because of bad experiences in the past, the Mercury pack was very suspicions of Ally (because she’s a seer) but It was wonderful to see how they slowly let her into their midst and into their pack. The story was filled with a lot of action and the sex was steamy. ‘Spiral of need’ is a great start of a ‘new’ series.
So Suzanne Wright is one of my favorite authors, and I love her series The Phoenix Pack. So when I heard she was doing a spin off series called The Mercury Pack, which is the new pack Nick Axton (3rd book in The Phoenix Pack series) formed with his mate, I was like Hell yeah I am so there!! Spiral of Need is the first book in the Mercury Pack series, and it is a awesome start to what I am sure with be a great series. I can’t tell you how excited I got when I saw it was on NetGalley. I so did a freak out fan girl dance.
What this book is about
Derren Hudson, Beta of the Mercury Pack always keeps his word. So when an old friend Cain calls in a favor Derren feels obligated to do it. Cain wants Derren to go get Ally Marshall from the pack she is in now that is giving her problems, and take her to The Mercury pack, and keep her under Derren’s protection until Cain can get to her. The problem with that is Ally is a Seer and Derren Hates all Seers. Seers have hurt him and his pack and he doesn’t trust any of them. Derren feeling that he owes Cain, goes to get Ally despite his feelings towards Seers. When he sees her not only does he want her, but his wolf is going crazy wanting to mark her. Derren feels angry about the whole situation, and confused about him and his wolf’s attraction to Ally. When Ally starts having visions about danger coming to the Mercury Pack will Derren believe her or will he let his prejudice of Seers keep him from protecting his pack?
I love both Derren and Ally. Derren is broody, serious, and loyal to those who he cares about. Derren has been hurt badly, and deeply by his family and pack so he doesn’t trust easily. Dominant, damaged, sexy , and protective he is everything you want from an alpha male hero. Ally is kind of a wanderer. Her family and pack were assassinated when she was a small child. Her and Cain are the only two that lived. She has always felt that she didn’t really belong. On top of that being a Seer with all the prejudices against Seers makes her feel more like a outcast. Even with all that has happened to her, she is still a sweet, caring woman. She is brave, protective, and saucy. Being a dominant wolf she is very independent. And lets not leave out that she is totally bad.
Derren and Ally are a very cute couple. They both know what it is like to be falsely accused of something horrible and have everyone they care about turn their backs on them. Their chemistry is wild and rough. Ally and Derren are a kick butt team. As a couple they support each other . They know when to push and when to give in. I think they are perfect for each other. I love that with each book you get to see more of the past characters from The Phoenix Pack series. That as a reader we get to see their characters continue to grow and add on to the story line, making me feel really connected and attached to them. I enjoyed the plot and that there is a lot of action in this book. I think this book is a great read and start to the series and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Suzanne Wright is killing me sweetly with her shifter stories. I loved this book. A spin-off from her Phoenix pack series and she doesn’t disappoint ever. I love her strong, kick ass and take no BS from anyone, even their own mate. In this story we have Ally who is being pushed out by her ex-lover’s mate. Well somebody needed to tell that evil Rachelle, you don’t mess with the Holt’s family. So Cain, Ally’s foster brother calls in a favor to Derren, Beta to the Mercury pack and he is now charged in protecting her. The only problem, she is Seer and he HATES them. Needless to say, there are some challenges to their relationship but she proves that she is not like everybody else. Yeah to Shay, female alpha to the Mercury pack, for giving her the benefit of the doubt. They end up working through the distrust, lies and find out they are true mates. YAY!!!! Lol…This story is so full of action and swift justice to those who think they can hurt anyone from the Mercury or Phoenix Pack. Loved reading and seeing members from the Phoenix Pack. Loved it!
Great Series! 🙂
