It’s been four months since we last checked in with Sylvia Stryker, and in that time, she’s had one thing on her mind – freeing Neptune, her mentor and friend, from prison for a crime he sort of committed. She’s come up with the perfect plan, too. She’s going to have him declared dead so she can slip him out of prison. However, when she goes to file the paperwork, she learns that there has been a murder in the prison and Neptune is the only suspect. Her original plan out the window, she has to act fast to free him and clear his name before he disappears for good. Can she do it?
Yes, this sounds like many of the cozy mysteries I read a love, but there is a twist to it – Sylvia’s adventures all take place in space. The setting is fun and detailed, but it never takes away from the action. I got lost in Sylvia’s world very quickly, and I suspect you will as well whether you love science fiction or not. The plot is fast paced with plenty of twists and turns. Unfortunately, a few of them were a bit abrupt. The story makes sense in the end, but I wish things had been explained a bit more. The characters, some human and some alien, are all fully developed, and I was thrilled to get to spend more time with them. If you are interested in something new and different, be sure to check out this series, and if you are already a fan, you’ll be happy with Sylvia’s latest case.
Spiders from Mars is another exciting installment in Vallere’s Sylvia Stryker cozy mystery series. Sylvia has been busy formulating her plan to save her mentor, Neptune, from prison. Just when she puts her plan into action, things go from bad to worse. Neptune gets framed for a murder he didn’t commit meaning that Sylvia’s plan to get him out gets complicated. Now Sylvia needs to find out what really happened and come up with a new way to save Neptune. Time however is not on Sylvia’s side so she definitely needs to solve this case fast.
Vallere sets up a good story for Sylvia by having this mystery really force her to look at her friends and allies to see whether or not they deserve that trust. Sylvia needs to really look at the people she surrounds herself with to see if they deserve her trust. I also really enjoyed seeing my favorite secondary characters again since I really think that they add to the story. The book’s mystery is well done with many twists and turns, and it succeeds at keeping the reader guessing. Overall Spiders from Mars proved to be an entertaining read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Sylvia’s next adventure.
Received a copy of Spiders from Mars from the author in exchange for my honest review.
I never expected to love this series, but I do! It’s set in outer space, but cozy mystery all he way. Sylvia has spent the last four months plotting to free her unjustly imprisoned friend from prison, but it doesn’t go quite as she intended. This is a fast-paced story with a lot of action. It’s intelligently written, with a great plot and engaging characters. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
I absolutely loved this latest installment of this series. It was great being back with Sylvia and the whole gang on another case. This one’s a little more personal because Sylvia’s trying to free Neptune from jail, prove his innocence, and figure out who’s framing him for murder. This mystery was a great one. It was fast paced and high stakes. And when it came time for the reveal, I was completely shocked by it. I did not see that one coming. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, I highly recommend checking out this super fun series.
Another Fine Space Adventure/Cozy Mystery
I love this series. There is just enough tongue-in-cheek sarcasm to make me happy. The constant wardrobe/fashion/clothing comments are also cute and fun. The mystery is a very good cozy set in hypothetical space. It really does remind me of watching the original Star Trek ‘Lost in Space/ Battlestar Galactica of my childhood. This is a wonderful; addition to the series. While the books do stand alone well, I think that the reader would enjoy the series more by reading them in order. This book will certainly pull the reader out of the standard cozy mystery rut. This series is more like a cozy action/adventure mystery. The author gave me this ARC book for free and this is my honest opinion.
