From New York Times Bestselling Author, Kristen Proby, comes Spells, the next installment in her gripping Bayou Magic series… control.
Like the powerful and broody warlock who’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—and even the lifetimes I often can’t. Things almost as dangerous as Lucien Bergeron’s hold on me and the breathtaking smiles only I get to see.
Or the evil still stalking the streets of New Orleans that beckons to me to see. To feel. To die.
With everything riding on a razors-edge, and things that have been portended coming to fruition, threatening both me and those I love, I’m not sure if I’m strong enough to resist my fate. Or his charm.
If I work with Lucien, it could mean the end for both of us.
If I don’t, those I love most will pay.

Such a good book. I loved the first one. So getting to see all our fave characters return was a plus but I also love how they are rich in New Orleans history and the witch craft. It’s so interesting. Loved Lucian and Millies info about past lives that was crazy. He is totally swoon worthy. In how devoted he was to Millie over the many lifetimes they had together. Wow. Loved it.
Spells is the second book in the Bayou Magic series by Kristen Proby. While it can be read as a standalone title, there’s a mystery interwoven into the series that is best experienced by reading the books in order. Trust me when I say it’s worth your time and money investments.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Kristen Proby’s. There aren’t many books of hers that I won’t 1-click, most without even reading the blurb. However, I will admit that I had to take a moment to read the blurb for Shadows before jumping into the series, as it was a bit of a different type of story than she’s written in the past. That said, she also seems to be stretching her writing wings lately, and I’m always up for a new adventure with her, so I dove right in, loved it, and had to wait an agonizingly long time for this book. Then I promptly left it on my TBR until closer to book three’s release because the suspense is killing me! But Lucien and Millie’s story was so worth the wait.
And just like with Shadows, I was sucked in and hooked in the best possible way. It was spooky and, at times, horrifying, and I should not have read it at night. It was twisted. It was emotional. It was steamy. It was heartbreaking yet redeeming. And it was full of amazingly strong and savvy female characters. It also contained some revolting characters, but they are hauntingly necessary for this storyline.
You’re going to want to set aside several hours where you will have minimal interruptions before you start this book because once you start, you will not want to put it down. Needless to say, as with her first true paranormal story, Shadows, I’d say she hit it out of the park once more with Spells. With Serendipity (book three) slated to release this October, I have just enough time to reread both books, so I’m all ready for what I’m sure will be a stunning conclusion to this paranormal series.
NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Spells by Kristen Proby 5 out of 5 stars!
And the sisters are back!! When I read Shadows book one in the Bayou Magic series I was absolutely blown away because I mean New Orleans, witches and romance? I was 100% here for it and book two Spells was no different I absolutely adored Millie, Lucien and their love of a millennia.
Millie a hedgewitch as well as her sisters Daphne and Brielle have who have their own special kind of magic defeated Horace at least for the moment and nearly a year later things are finally starting to seem normal but right when life finally seems to settle down Millie is thrown back in to Horace’s antics. On top of that Lucien, a member of her coven and the man she has always had a connection with is more present than ever making her see things in a new light.
Lucien has known for years about his and Millie’s connection and while he has been longing for her for what seems like several lifetimes, he needs Millie to come to him in her own time. As Lucien tries to protect not only Millie but her sisters he knows that Horace is getting stronger and with only so much time left before Horace is back to his full strength he has to make sure the woman he loves is protected at all costs or risk losing her for good.
As five of the six as well as their coven work together to try to defeat an evil force that they can’t see bodies keep piling up and Millie as well as Lucien know that they have this once chance to get rid of Horace until the six can be united and get rid of him for good.
This book was a bit more on the romance side of things compared to book one which totally makes sense for this story yet on the other hand it seemed like it ended rather abruptly. One minute they are trying to defeat this evil and the next all is peachy. I wanted more magic, mystery and maybe a touch more angst.
These sisters are pure magic, literally and I can’t wait to see how it all ends with Daphne’s story.
P.S. You must read Shadows book one or this book will not make much sense.
Great story. Wonderful characters. Absolutely love the writing. But…..
There are certain aspects you come to expect from your authors that you like. Mine is I like my authors to write some steam with the story. Normally Kristen does. Unfortunately with Spells it all fades to black and I hate that.
I’m hoping Serendipity the next book with Daphne and her love interest is a little different where the steam is involved.
I found it entertaining for the genre…..good engaging characters……this needs to be read in the context of the series…..makes it richer….though would like more believable intimacy …….
Okay if there ever was a book worth reading about connected souls, Spells by Kristen Proby is it. I loved that we finally see more of Lucien and boy this was so not what I expected thinking about him. Seeing him with Millie and his storyline was just wow. Not only do we see Lucien at his best but seeing him with his glasses looking all nerdy and smart was hot and in Millie’s eyes sexy. Then we have Millie who is not only a young witch but seeing her see what she can do with her powers to fight Horace was like a superhero coming to life. With Lucien by her side we see two souls finally seeing how much they belong together and what they can do together as one soul. Kristen Proby not only shows us what their lives were like but how deep their love has just gotten stronger throughout the past. Not only do we see these two but a teaser of what is to come and boy cannot wait for Horace to get what he deserves. Loved it.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
What a fantastic follow-up to Shadows! Book 2 in the Bayou Magic series is even better than the first (which I loved), as it builds on the relationship between the three sisters and their mother, and expands the world of magic and paranormal mysteries. I loved this book! Highly recommended!
This is book 2 of Kristen’s Bayou Magic series and just like the first book, definitely loved this one as well. It’s a paranormal romance that fit perfectly for the spooky season. Witches and evil ghosts. Loveeeeed the main characters, soulmates who have lived many lives and have always found one another in every lifetime. I don’t think I’ve read a lot books like that, but this one definitely goes up there as a fave.
There’s definitely more romance in this one and I was sooooooo happy about that. This series is one I’m always looking forward too once the spooky season comes about.
I love these books..can’t wait for the next one to come out
An excellent addition to the Bayou Magic series, Spells will engage your mind and imagination.
This book was everything I needed and more. It was steamy, scary, gut wrenching, sad, horrific, and everything in between. I thought Shadows was super good, this one was awesome and it’s one step closer to defeating that horrible man Horace. I just couldn’t believe all the things that happened in the book, I was in awe. I just loved Millie’s and Lucien’s story, everything about to was just swoon worthy. Trust me you will totally swoon over Lucien and the way he is with Millie. I can’t wait for Daphne’s story sadly we have to wait a very long time for it to come out and I just want to cry. Regardless, I loved this book.
I absolutely loved Spells!!! Kristen is such a great paranormal author. I love her take on witches and how they navigate the modern world. Lucian and Millie are a match made in heaven. I love their history and that they keep finding each other and fight for their love. I am on the edge with seeing them fight the dark spirits so they can finally be at peace and just focus on the good spells like love. Can’t wait for daphne’s books.
I am loving this series. Millie & Lucien’s story is quite interesting. The sisters bond is a unique one that is extremely strong. Kristen Proby has definitely proven that she can write paranormal alongside romance. I cannot wait for the final book in the series to see how this all ends.
Kristen Proby proved in SHADOWS (Bayou Magic, #1) that she can more than handle herself with the genre jump from contemporary romance to paranormal. SPELLS once again shows her ability to bring in the creep factor, while losing none of the romance, writing a book that is the perfect next step in this series.
The Landry sisters of New Orleans have known that they have “gifts” for as long as they can remember, but only Millie has embraced hers wholeheartedly. A hedgewitch who is happiest mixing up concoctions in her shop and hanging out with her sisters, Millie is an unabashed practitioner of the craft, having spent most of her life learning about her abilities and how to use them.
Lucien and Millie have known each other for a long time…a very, very long time, and even though she takes her time admitting it, some things, like a love that spans the ages, are meant to be. Once Millie lets down her guard and lets Lucien in, the knowledge that they are truly a power couple becomes clear, and they will need each other, plus the power of those closest to them, to bring down an evil that they believed they’d already defeated.
There are plenty of twists and turns, grisly bits, and lovely ones, too, and all are blended perfectly into a story that had me on the edge of my seat. The best part is that there is more to come for the sisters and the men that love them, although I’m a little bit grumbly that it’ll take a year to get there. In the meantime, SPELLS is the perfect spooky read, so lock the doors, turn on some lights, and enjoy.
Kristen Proby’s Bayou Magic series is back with Spells, and book two tells Millie and Lucien’s story as well as continues the three sisters’ fight against the evil in New Orleans and with their adversary back, it’s clear that they, once again, have a battle on their hands that will not only test their powers and their bond, but also lead to the ultimate revelation – one that Millie is going to need to accept so that their fight is one that they can unequivocally win despite everything they’re up against.
The power of the three sisters reminds me of the television series Charmed and just like the Halliwell sisters, Brielle, Millie, and Daphne are powerful witches who work together to protect the innocent and are stronger as one, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t close calls or circumstances that could destroy them all.
No matter how hard you try or you think it can’t be – fate plays a role, even lives that extend through the centuries – their love is eternal, a bond that can’t be broken and one that can be traced throughout the course of the many different lives spent together. I love the way that Proby presents the idea of soul mates and then illustrates just how destined/just how meant to be Millie and Lucien are, regardless of outside forces and extenuating circumstances and even though Millie does her best to avoid the pull she feels toward Lucien, regardless of how long and how much he has been in her life, it’s impossible for her to not want him, to not remember their lives and the lifetimes they’ve spent together.
Spells is the perfect read so close to Halloween, not only because of the spooky and scary instances that happen in the story but also because the sisters’ love of All Hallows Eve and all the ways they celebrate definitely got me in the October 31st excitement, even if 2020 is anything but normal.

Awwww… Who knew a PNR read could make my romantic heart soar to such heights?! SPELLS indeed bewitched me with the best of my favorite trope, fated soulmates, in a way I soaked it up in one sitting. Millie and Lucien – omg, THE best book boyfriend, right here – enchanted me in a way, that even through the suspense and masterfully written creepy moments, I had a warm happy feeling in my heart! Loved it! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Book 2 in this series and I love it!
Supernatural books usually aren’t my thing but this series has drawn me in from the start, this 2nd book is about Millie and Lucien. Their love story is very different and something that has always been inevitable. I can’t wait for more from this family and their group of friends
Oh. My. Goddess! This book truly touched my heart. I just dont know what to say without giving anything away but Lucien and Millie have a thousand life times to make up for and H is f***ing with them all!! I won’t say his full name because he doesn’t deserve it!!
But holy moly, this book!!! At 41% my heart was singing whilst I was coming out of my skin!!
This author keeps you on a knife’s edge as H ups his games and I was waiting for things to go pips up!
An absolutely fantastic read!!
I just don’t even know what to say about this story that hasn’t already been said. I could go on and on about this series that has made me fall in love with Kristen’s writing.
I loved watching Millie mourn the mother she and her sisters had longed for all those years.
I adored seeing Millie and Lucien together from their very first interaction.
The way our friends are still being tormented by Horace is something I’ve never read before and I am here for it.
I want a coffee shop like Witches Brew to work in every day.
My only issue is that now I have to wait until next year to get the next book and find out more about The Six and I am not sure I can handle that kind of wait.
I was looking forward to this an Kirsten Proby did not disappoint me. I absolutely loved Lucien and Millie! They were perfect to together and seriously made me swoon hard. Considering everything that has been thrown at them recently and in the past they are perfect for each other.
I really adored the idea of this story, of being soulmates and being reunited throughout the years. They have been fighting the same force in each lifetime but hopefully with the Six being brought together they stand the chance at growing old together.
Once I started I was hooked, more secrets are revealed but I have a feeling more are to come. I can’t wait to see how the last book in the series plays out! A year is a long time to wait but it will be worth it.
