Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the not-so-charming prince Kato is so not … not-so-charming prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.
Talk about unhappily ever after.
Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called “Kansas.” Now it’s up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse…before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

This is one of those books I had to have when I first read about them. I think I found it here on Goodreads and added it to the wishlist, ordered it from Amazon and wanted to read it right away. Then the book got lost in the mail, had to be resent and we were about three weeks later and the urge was gone. Until I saw the book back here on Goodreads, read what it was about and was like: I have to read this book right now. So that’s what I did.
This book was everything I had hoped it would be. Although there were some serious and emotional moments, which surprised me because that wasn’t the general tone of the book, the book was mostly funny. The chapter titles were funny, based on Disney quotes and songs. Everything that happened was quite funny, even though the characters probably think a little different about that. And the characters were funny, without them becoming stereotypes or flat.
The book also takes place in a fairytale world and yet the book never forgets that it’s a Wizard of Oz retelling. Loads of recognizable elements are there, quite often a little twisted and different, but totally still there. Including all the strange places, the strange villages and the strange people living in this kingdom. And for sure including the wicked witch, melting when doused in water, and the Wizard, pretending to be someone he’s very clearly not.
And very surprisingly I kinda started caring about the characters along the way. It’s hard to pinpoint a moment where it happened, but it happened. That’s also because the main characters are growing so much. Dot is a spoiled princess, wanting things she can’t have and never understanding the bigger picture, but somehow she comes to realize at some point that maybe she did look at everything wrong and it’s the start of a very nice character growth. Can’t wait to read the sequel!
Betsy is a very unconventional writer, for me.
I loved the strangeness of the world she created and the fact that her characters seems a little ethereal, almost ghost like. (As if you’ve met them but had forgotten all about them but they also feel like they’re semi-real).
The plot was a little unusual but very interesting. I like the twist on the classic Wizaed of Oz meets Camelot theme. Beautiful ideas and well written descriptions.
Cliffhangers may occur.
quite nostalgic to me but i lost my book 🙁
I received an ARC from the publisher and have chosen to review it. This is the first book in the Storymakers series and it was hilarious. I absolutely loved this book it just had me laughing so much throughout the story. I just love the characters that we are introduced to and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
Cute, funny and entertaining. Slow in places
Love this entire series!
In my opinion, this book is absolutely astounding. I spent 5 hours reading it and have no regrets.
Loved this mashup of fairy tales. Lots of fun pop culture references too!
