Magic wasn’t supposed to be this difficult. The last spell Tessa Daniels cast turned a woman’s hair green. The one before that? Part fairy tale part mystery. I love genre bending books and this one does it well.
A bit of murder. A bit of mystery. A bit of romance. This book caters perfectly to everything I love in a book. The romantic tension is drawn out so well, with the perfect amount of romance to keep the reader interested and wanting more. I loved the characters. Tessa and Derrick had great chemistry. I absolutely loved Tessa’s personality. She’s fiery, confident despite her shortcomings, and her humor is so entertaining.
This book has been on my to-read list for the better part of a year, and I’m SO glad I ended up picking it up. I seriously loved everything about this book. It was perfect. I haven’t read a Cinderella fairy tale retelling quite like this where it’s from the witch’s point of view, and there is a murder mystery to solve.
Loved this book! Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I received this book as an ARC and was really glad I had that chance. I enjoyed the humor and the different take on a well-known fairytale. Take some time, put your feet, up and get lost as you watch Tessa come into her own as a witch and as she grows closer to Derrick.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!! Poor Tessa, she’s a bit down on her luck. When someone dies after Tessa placed an illusion on her, her luck goes from bad to worse because she’s a suspect and the detective assigned doesn’t look to fondly on witches.
I liked the world Collett built with her fairy tale reimagining. It was fun, detailed, and interesting. Tessa is a great character, she has lots of heart and always tries to do what’s right, even if it’s a little on the dumb side of choices. She also has a hilarious wit and I enjoyed her inner dialogue. Derrick was a bit of a grump, but I loved his and Tessa’s interactions together!!
Romance-wise I’d describe it as sweet with heat.
It is a great book and fans of mysteries/romance and magic will enjoy it!!
What a twist to my favorite fairy tale! Our cinderella goes to visit the local inept witch to have her change her clothes into a ball gown with glass slippers so she can attend the ball at the castle that evening. Tessa ( the witch) manages to do that but in trying to change the pumpkin into a carriage it blows up! Ella ( cinderella) goes to the ball that night but is murdered and suspicion falls on Tessa as she was one of the last to see Ella alive. Tessa finally convinces Derrick (the detective) to help him solve the case and clear her name and also get the reward money to pay off a debt she owes. What follows is an enemies to lovers story on the detective’s part but though Tessa is smitten by the detective she thinks she has no chance to win his heart because of who and what she is. However she soon finds out that maybe she isn’t as inept and hopeless as she has always thought herself to be and sees perhaps a brighter future for herself.
I loved this story and recommend it to all who love fairy tales with a happy ending! The story is a page turner and there is humor as well as excitement to keep you glued to the pages to see what happens next!
Why not get comfortable and settle down and enjoy reading this story! I believe you’ll love it as much as I do! You’ll experience humor, sadness and happiness along with a story that is a real page turner to the very end!!
Some books just get everything right and Spellbound After Midnight by Jenna Collett is one of them. If you like fairytale retellings with a twist, fantasy, romance, and quirky heroines, then you’ll love this book.
The author gives us a witch named Tessa who is flawed, sassy, and has dubious magical abilities. She’s mired in debt, but trying to keep her mother’s shop going but her reputation of magic gone wrong isn’t helping matters. When she uses illusion to give a girl the outfit of her dreams so she could go to a ball, Tessa never imagined the poor thing would be murdered. Queue the gorgeous but uptight hero!
Derrick is the rising star investigator of the Royal Agency. When Ella is murdered at the prince’s ball, he quickly links the case to two others. Backtracking the girl’s steps, he meets the witch who helped her get to the ball. And then just can’t seem to shake her! She finagled her way onto his case and now they must work together to stop the murderer. Before he stops them.
The chemistry between these two characters is perfection. I loved watching their romance grow. I loved seeing how they help each other become the better versions of themselves. And I loved the murder investigation! That’s a whole lot to love! Definitely worth five hearts for this review.
Happily the next book in this series just came out so I’ll be able to find out what happens next and hopefully see more of these two characters.

Feel the need! Jenna presents one thrilling approach, presenting this gem with on point realism, showcasing such acumen, enthusiasm, fervor and unique insight propelling this jewel to staggering heights. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, kicking this gem into a tempest, blasting it into a hissy with a mind-blowing culmination. The characters are genuine and original with depth and qualities that transform into amazing personalities. The dynamics and presentation in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page your drawn into this web so deep until everything else ceases to exist. Add drama, turmoil, tension, intrigue and mounting suspense along with a boatload of danger while dodging calamity, makes for one block busting adventure. The scenes are so vividly detailed it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Remarkable job Jenna, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
Tessa was a witch who had her spells go haywire most of the time. Ella went to her to get an illusion spell so she could get in the prince’s ball then she was killed. Then the detective Derick asked her questions about what she did for Ella since she was the person that had contact with her before the ball. Ella started to haunt her so she went to tell the detective about it the prince decided that they should work together. Ella gave her some leads to help them with what she could remember. Then she was kidnapped by the killer and it was a surprise on who it was. As they were working on finding who the killer, they got very close and that was great!
