A vampire, a werewolf, a fae, and me, a human, walk into a casino. Only one comes out winning the prize.Lunar Royale Casino: Boston’s premiere hotspot for supernaturals. I’ve served drinks to Boston’s supernatural elite every night for years. But tonight, I will be the first server to join a poker game. You may be asking yourself why I’m taking this dangerous chance of stealing from the king of … chance of stealing from the king of vampires, a bastard fae prince, and the matriarch of werewolves. Well, it’s because I need the money they’re playing for to leave the city and start over. ASAP.
There’s just one hitch in that plan: the final prize isn’t money, but rather a dragon’s egg. One with ancient magic that, as the game grows tense, calls to me from inside the scaled shell. A sense of destiny, of knowing, I can’t shake off.
That egg, and the dragon inside, are mine. And if I don’t win this game of poker and take the dragon for myself, I’ll lose my life and my one shot out of this city. And these supernaturals will have all they need to start a new war…

This book starts out as Vera is running late to perpetuate the trick she is hoping to pull off of getting herself invited to join in a very high-stakes poker game. Not a very auspicious beginning. And things don’t improve much for her from the get-go. Yet somehow she manages to achieve her objective, even if it doesn’t turn out how she anticipated. Then again, anything having to do with supernaturals apparently has quite a lot of room for variation.
Vera had dreamed of winning enough money to get out of Boston and start her life anew. Instead, she ends up the guardian of a very rare and much sought after dragon egg. And egg which proceeds to do what eggs tend to to — hatch! Both owner and charge become targets for a host of supernaturals, all with their own methods of persuation, and of course their own personal agendas.
Eventually, Vera is rescued by an unexpected source. Although she soon comes to question how much of a rescue it truly was, and if she’s actually better off than where she might otherwise have found herself. Things go from bad to even worse fairly quickly, and just pretty much continue to go downhill from there.
There are a handful of characters, in addition to those from the poker game, who appear as though they will be significant to the story. It still remains to see who, if any, are actually on Vera’s side.
I was extremely frustrated at the number of things that were alluded to yet never explained, and the general lack of information about the current situation, significant history, and her actual role in what was transpiring. Vera herself is quite irked about how things are going, but she is much more patient and accomodating than I would be in a similar situation.
Suffice it to say that by the end of this book we have many more questions than answers, and I suspect that this state of things will not change any time soon. The current battle and political situation is kind of resolved at the end, but there leaves much to be completed. Things promise to continue apace in the next volume, which I am hoping will provide at least some explanation as to what is going on.
This is a great urban fantasy adventure filled with faeries, vampires, witches, dragons, magic, journeys to other worlds, and much more! With an action packed storyline and some great characters this makes for an exciting journey for Vera our heroine and I cannot wait to read the next book!
Very exciting story. It is a good one though. Hard to put down too. A woman coming into her power. I think that there will be more surprises coming. (Just a feeling.) Vera has a long road to travel to finely be good enough to protect all she needs to. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
From riches to rags to riches, the ups and downs are bad enough with all the negotiations, intrigue and backstabbing implied. Add in werewolves, vampires, fae and dragons scrapping over our heroine, and my imagination hurts. If you like BR Kingfisher’s Rosie O’Grady’s Paranormal Bar and Grill series, you ought to like this.
I received a copy of the ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, but I don’t think it will be for long.
Holy shiznet!!! This story is gr8. Supernaturals run free throughout Boston, and practically run the city. Vera forces her way into an elite poker game & wins a Dragon’s egg. All hell breaks loose and she’s on the run. So much is happening. I can’t wait to read the next story. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
“Spark of Lightning” (Storm Warden Chronicles #1) is a new urban fantasy series set in an alternate world, where a cataclysm occurred ten years before revealed the existence of natural beings and change the world order. The city is ruled by vampires, werewolves and witches, and only few very powerful humans are allowed to have a saying in the day-to-day procedures
The MC, Vera (of Varrone-Donovan Financial ) is the daughter of some very rich and powerful family, which really does not help her much, as she has been estranged from her family for quite a long time. Currently working as a waitress at the Lunar Royale casino, which caters exclusively to supernaturals, she has a plan to flee the city and begin a brand-new life: insinuate yourself to the poker table, play a couple of hands, win the grand price and make a quick exit. The plan is a full success, somehow…. and she ends up with the grand price…. a dragon egg, something it shouldn’t even exist… but exits it does and hatch it does
The story develops into a full-paced adventure, real page-turner, whimsical at times and always enjoyable. Vera is a very sympathetic character, the baby dragon is adorable, the story well timed and the secondary characters well draft. A throughout satisfying book.
