Praise for Space Team:“Laughed so hard I shot coffee out my nose.”“If all scifi was like this, everyone would be reading it.”“This book is so good you might punch yourself in the face.”Cal Carver thinks his life has hit rock bottom. When the small-time conman finds himself imprisoned and forced to share a cell with a semi-naked cannibalistic serial killer, he’s pretty sure his day can’t get any … killer, he’s pretty sure his day can’t get any worse.
He is wrong.
It isn’t until two-thirds of the human race is wiped out and Cal is mistakenly abducted by aliens that things really start to go downhill.
Whisked across the galaxy, Cal is thrown into a team of some of the sector’s most notorious villains and scumbags and tasked with delivering a package to a warlord-run solar system where the authorities dare not venture.
The mission should be simple enough, but as one screw-up leads to another the ragtag group of unwitting heroes find themselves in a frantic battle to save an entire alien civilization – and its god – from total annihilation.
Featuring epic space battles, unforgettable characters, and a shapeshifting blob with the face of Tobey Maguire, Space Team is the first book in the internationally bestselling series by award-winning author, Barry J. Hutchison, and is perfect for fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Galaxy Quest, Guardians of the Galaxy, and pretty much anything else with the word ‘Galaxy’ in the title.
Except maybe Samsung’s Galaxy S series, which is a range of mobile phones, and so not really similar.

Space Team is one of those books that take you by surprise. The humour works well, and there’s a nice variety of jokes, from the simple to the sublime, so pretty much anyone will crack a smile as they read, and many of us will laugh out loud. But this book isn’t just a bunch of jokes. I mentioned surprise, and the thing that grabbed me more than I’d anticipated was the characters: you’ll find them effortlessly well-drawn, warm, and engaging.
On top of all this, the fast-paced plot of Space Team will carry you along for the ride. As you might expect, the team itself comprises an eclectic cast, with plenty of sharp banter as the rag-tag crew face a variety of off-the-wall situations. This series has a loyal following, and after reading this book, you’ll know why. So, if you enjoyed Red Dwarf and Galaxy Quest, give Space Team a try. You’ll be in for a treat.
A page turner, fun, witty, and full of sarcasm. Not getting smarter reading, nor better looking. However a great amount of fun reading it and laughing. On to the second book in series.
A romp through space with a team of misfit criminals chosen to save the galaxy. Great fun!
Omg, so funny. A crazy group of unpredictable characters. A human drafted fir a space mission, but he didn’t even know there could be a space mission, it gets even better from there. If you science fiction and humor, this book is awesome, best part is there are more of them.
Awesome book and an amazing author. One of very few books that made me full on break down laughing. Highly recommended.
I found this book while trolling the science fiction options on KU. This was a very funny departure from what I usually read from the science fiction genre. If you are looking for serious science fiction, this isn’t the read for you. Hutchison’s book is great if you a looking for a laugh out loud, often ridiculous story about a con man caught up in a ridiculous series of events.
I definitely hope to read the rest of the series this year! Recommended for fans of Valerie Valdez’s Chilling Effect and/or Space Balls and Futurama
Barry J. Hutchinson is one of the funniest humorous sci fi series writers since Douglas Adams. The “hero,” Cal, is a hilarious mix of ineptitude, false bravado, and sweet, just trying to make his way in the universe after being stolen from earth in a huge case of mistaken identity. Laugh out loud funny.
These are the outright hilarious tales of the Space Team, a rag-tag band of criminal miscreants and criminally failing misfits with hearts of gold who again and again save the universe. Book One introduces our intrepid crew with a fast-paced, twisty-but-not-confusing, just-complicated-enough situation set in a “space” that isn’t just a riff on one of the spaces we already know from other sci-fi outings, but a new and original form of “space.” And with new and original life forms that our crew must both interact with and, in many cases, overcome, often to riotous result.
I cannot remember the last time a book made me literally laugh out loud. (And I mean literally in, well, the literal sense of the word. I got some weird looks on the train, let me tell you.)
Sci-fi comedies rarely work. This one does. If you want a really fun fantasy book, Space Team is it. And consider the audiobook: Phil Thron’s narration is brilliant.
Awesome read. I highly recommend all his books!
I’m not a Monty Python fan, of which this book reminds me, but there were a few places where I laughed out loud. I might not continue in the series, but the laughs were worth the read.
I read this after a few hard hitters, and when I laughed during the first paragraph, I knew it was the palate cleanser I needed. It is funny, but still provides a good story (with a few twists) that actually kind of makes you feel good. It is the first in a series, and I don’t know if I’ll read the rest of them quickly, but it doesn’t end on a real cliffhanger or anything, so it can be read by itself if you just want something quick and amusing.
I loved it! The story is original and the characters are hilarious! Mistaken identities and Murphy’s Law create great adventures. I binged the whole series in a few days and laughed out loud several times.
I liked the characters.
most sci-fi is way too serious this had me laughing out loud on several occasions
I look forward to more from this author
Very Douglas Adams’ish. Humorous and a little slapstick. Fun read.
Didn’t even finish. Just too hookie
Not great literature, but I like to read fun Sci-Fi novels before bed and this fit the bill!
I love this whole series! I can hardly wait for the next one. Who knew scifi comedy, could,be so much fun since Aliens!
I like this book and want to read more from the author
