Charlie was living the life of luxury… as an alien wizard’s gladiator slave. It was not ideal. He had survived a spaceship crash, alien slave traders, space pirates and fierce gladiatorial combat. Hell, he’d even faced an actual fire-breathing dragon and lived, but now he was presented with an even greater challenge. Domestic living, captive on a strange world.Charlie almost had to laugh at his … world.
Charlie almost had to laugh at his changing circumstances, having seen it all since a wormhole spat him out in a distant galaxy. He learned to fight, he learned to use magic, he even learned to kill––to survive at all costs. And that hard work had somehow landed him a cushy life on a powerful wizard’s estate. But all was not what it seemed.
Something was wrong, and he still wasn’t a free man. Captivity, even in a gilded cage such as this, was abhorrent to the spaceman from Earth. And while the new existence he had fallen into seemed one of luxury, he couldn’t help but wonder when it would all go to hell.
He should have known, with his luck, the answer was soon.

This is a great second in the series and is as good as, if not better than the first. That is saying a lot because the first book was great too. I’m looking forward to the next books in the series.

This book had all the elements that I should have loved, space opera, magic, dragons. You could love it for just these things. There’s a lot to work with here. What could go wrong? So, so plotting (five chapters in and still nothing happening) and lackluster wordsmithery did not have me asking “what happens next?” This author has potential so don’t count him out yet. (3.5 stars rounded to 4)

Author Scott Baron has done a marvelous job of detailing Charlie’s ongoing adventures. He has survived so much in this new galaxy that operates using magic instead of technology, it could make you think he couldn’t have any more adventures. But Charlie is still a slave. When he wakes, he finds he is in the home of his new buyer, a powerful magician who is one of the Council of 20, rulers of many systems. His new owner sets the new rules of Charlie’s life. He has the freedom of the house and grounds within certain parameters, but it is hardly onerous slavery. Charlie finds that the dragon who helped him in his last arena fight has also been bought by this magician, and his old friend Tuktuk from his original slave ship is also in the house. Tuktuk is the cook, and Charlie makes sure he renews their friendship. This book is non-stop action with some vital new characters being introduced. I enjoyed myself tremendously as I read this, and I think you will too.
My expectations were very high for this sequel after reading the wonderful ‘Bad Luck Charlie’, and I wasn’t disappointed in any way.
This book sees Charlie Gault reunited with his blue friend, Tuktuk, but yet to meet his owner, the Visla, Yoral Maktan, whose estate he is now on. Charlie has no idea why the Visla wants him, or what he wants him to do. Charlie meets a few of the ‘characters’ on the estate, two in particular that are surprises not only for Charlie, but also to others. One is stunningly beautiful, and full of fire and mischief. The other is just…a wee bit prickly. I don’t want to spoil anything more of the story. I want you to be pulled in and enjoy it fully for yourself.
This is a very good sequel, and is full of the author’s unique blend of fun, action and adventure. Magic plays a rather large role in this tale. However, it’s not out of place, it seems natural here, and I love the way the characters use some of the spells, it’s ingenious! I know magic makes you think of Harry Potter-y stuff (of which I am not a fan), but this, in my humble opinion, feels better.
Excellent, enjoyable, emotive, and an easy read – a solid five stars – and I can’t wait for the next one as each book just gets better and better.
He had been through so much and he seemed to have landed on his feet as a slave in a posh place where things seem good. He knew he should not have even formed the idea as things are about to hit the fan. See what is going to happen
