Sovereign Sacrifice has a lot of emotion in between the pages. Vi definitely had some hard lessons to learn in this part of her journey. I really felt for her and Taavin too.
Vi has grown so much since the start of her quest.
She’s really a character I’ve grown to love.
I loved the flow of this story and the surprising twists.
I can’t wait to see how Vi and Taavin’s tale will end.
Failed Future ended on such a high that I was expecting a really epic continuation and conflict in Sovereign Sacrifice. I am disappointed to say that that did not happen. The story in itself was fine, there was action, conflict and struggles along the way as well as emotional twists and developments. However the story was overall slow-going and underwhelming. This was mainly because of how it was built with day to day life serving the new sovereign and protecting the sword. So much so that the story had no choice but to quickly jump from month to month just so it wouldn’t be too slow paced. This only made it lose depth though and that’s where I feel that the book lost me.
There just wasn’t anything to it for me to get that invested, especially because of how the book was built with ordinary (by the book’s standard) work life and jumps in time. I did like the complexity and desperation behind Vi’s role and heavy mission of saving a doomed world. This was always an underlying conflict in the book that brought a lot, however only came to center stage when Vi herself impulsively took action in between the day-by-day life. She never seemed to have any clear cut plan since she only did something towards the goal of saving the world when circumstances surrounding her demanded it. That’s also partly why I am left feeling bereft of something, since the book didn’t have a clear cut goal or cleverness the previous had that could blow me away. The only thing that I looked forward to was the brief moments of romance with Taavin and the actions that actually led to some deeper development.
This may be more of a personal issue for me, but I also wasn’t that into the direction the book was heading towards and was partly already in. Starting in … what? A new world? New dimension? Whatever it was, it was to me the same as killing off the characters introduced to me in not only previous books but the previous series. The characters I’ve followed from book one and come to love, Aldrik and Vhalla, suddenly didn’t matter nor exist anymore. Nor did the characters Vi had befriended in previous books. Instead now it was all about Fiera and Zira that Vi cared about. It was like the author pulled out a gun, shot all the characters that mattered, then pointed the gun on me and told me to love the new characters instead. Sadly, it does not work that way. Sure, it was semi interesting getting a deeper look into the history with Aldrik’s mother and how it all came to be the way it was. That’s all that came for it though. Zira and Fiera didn’t have that much to bring to the table that I could get invested in, for the same reason as with the storytelling; missing depth.
Despite being disappointed I am giving Sovereign Sacrifice three stars. It did have things I liked, like the romance (the little there was) some emotional value and definitely a complex and original plot. I just hope that all the issues I had will not reappear in the next and last book and that the gun shots fired at my most loved characters were none-lethal and they will come back.
The 4th book was a great continuation of the series! I cant wait for Crystal Caged to see how everything wraps up!
This is definitely a must read series if you love fantasy and epic read, this is the fouth installment of this series. Vi to me is definitely a heroine. This read grabbed me from the first to the last page, its a real page turner that would make a fantastic netflix addition if not a fantastic movie. As I read the scenes I could definitely image each scene in vivid detail in my minds eye. There are twists and turns that are epic. This is a definite must have series to have in your library. And I definitely recommend.

Ms. Kova has built a wonderful world…this new twist, cannot wait to see how it turns back. Looking forward to the next book.
The twists and turns of this saga will undoubtedly leave you breathless! Once again, Ms. Kova has left my mind blown! My heart is aching and I’m ready to dive into the next book!!! When trying to save the day proves to be more than difficult, Vi has to rearrange all of the theories and completely rewrite the manual. She is forging alliances and meeting family members as she races the future of what will be. This was utterly brilliant and just reinforces the fact that Elise Kova writes like no one else! Excuse me while I fangirl really hard. I can’t help myself! I have these huge feelings of wanting to cheer but also feel so abysmally saddened by all of the events that Vi had a hand in that caused her all of these huge emotions!! I can’t wait to see how the rest will play out. I’m absolutely certain that Vi will in fact save the world and she’ll have her happily ever after! I’m hugely invested in the series… it’s one of my faves as is its author!!
