Struggling to keep from losing her house, Verity Long works with a ghost haunting the family manse, hoping to find treasure that will save the day. The book is amusing and the characters interesting.
I enjoyed reading Southern Spirits! The main character in the book is down on her luck because she chose to be true to herself in a situation where many would not make that choice. I also read the second book after this one. I am waiting for the persons that put her into the position of possibly losing her home to get what they deserve. I thought the book witty and whimsical at the same time!
A quick read with interesting characters. I may read the second in the series.
just started & really like it
I love the book
Verity is about to lose her home when she accidentally traps a ghost on her property and starts to see spirits. She starts ghost hunting to save her house. I love the first book in this series! It has mystery, a little suspense, a little romance, and some comic relief.
A great story. First off, who doesn’t love a woman with a pet skunk! Some great characters. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Hauntingly mysterious and intriguingly suspenseful little treat. This story is a far departure from anything I have read and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed every single second of it.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet. I loved this book! I finished it in less than a day. I would recommend this book to my friends!!
Had the opportunity to listen to book four in this series and loved it so naturally I had to go back and start at the beginning. I was not to be disappointed with the southern small town charm of the setting, color personalities for characters, and a cunning ghostly mystery.
Verity Long is the town pariah after dumping scion of the wealthiest family at the altar. Only Verity knows that Beau Wydell is not as golden as everyone thinks and his mother won a lawsuit over the expense of the wedding reception that cleaned Verity out and has her on the brink of losing her old family home to pay the debt.
A quirk of fate when Verity mistakes a funeral urn and ashes for a ‘dirty’ vase which she dumps the contents out over her rose bushes lands her with a gangster’s ghost who is now tied to her house. Frankie agrees to help her find the money to keep her house (which is now his, too) if she’ll do what it takes to free his ashes from the dirt and thus, free him from being stuck either at the house or wherever she took his urn.
Verity and Frankie are hired by Beau Wydell’s older brother, Ellis, to help him with an angry ghost that is tearing up all the renovations he’s making on the property he bought. In the process, Verity sees that Ellis is nothing like his brother and Ellis learns the truth of what happened between Verity and his brother. Ellis is also a cop so he manages to accept the truth about Verity’s ghost gift and ghosts even while they work to solve what is shaping up to be a dangerous hunt for the truth that someone wants to keep unknown.
I love the light and humor mixed with a moderately hair-raising ghostly mystery adventure. Verity is an engaging lead character and narrator. I love that she has a pet skunk, Lucy, her bright researcher librarian sister, southern manners and this second chance at something special with the stolid and handsome Ellis.
The mystery and all the ghostly activities is a neat world the author created. Frankie is a fun and sparkling character in the series and he feels authentic.
The audio version is narrated by the talented Tavia Gilbert. Verity comes alive as does her world and the story. I can’t wait to listen to more of her work.
All in all, this was abso-fab and I’ve got a new series to follow. Highly recommend this one to paranormal cozy mystery fans.
This was a Great Book. I’m ready to continue reading this series!
Book one in Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1. This author is new to me. I enjoyed this book a lot. A good mystery, good characters, good ghosts… It was such a fun change of pace story that I didn’t have to think hard about and was completely entertained the whole time. Author makes the supernatural almost believable. I myself am not interested in interacting with ghosts but it sure was fun to interact at a distance. Good book. Will read the next one.
4 1/2 stars What a fun read. This paranormal cozy takes place in Sugarland, Tennessee. The main character “Verity” is desperate to save her grandmothers’ home. She has a pet skunk named Lucy. Inadvertently a gangster ghost becomes attached to her. They find themselves trying to help her ex-fiance brother to rid himself of a poltergeist. Is she over her head with the poltergeist or fighting her attraction to the forbidden fruit?
This book is a fun mystery full of twists and turns along the way.
We meet Verity, the main character, who has been shunned by the community for leaving the “golden boy,” Beau, at the altar. Since that time, Verity has had trouble finding work and is about to lose her grandmother’s home. We get some backstory on Verity and what led to where she is, but I would have been okay with a little more. We do learn, though, that Verity is a likable character because she is strong, determined, and funny. We are also introduced to her new houseguest, Frankie, who is a ghost that’s now stuck at Verity’s house due to an unfortunate incident involving his ashes and a rosebush. Frankie and Verity inadvertently become ghost hunters in order to try and save their home. Frankie lifts the veil for Verity and allows her to see/talk to the spirits that are haunting places. Frankie is a fun character with charm and 1920s swagger. When Frankie and Verity accidentally take a job with Ellis, Verity’s ex-fiance’s brother, things get interesting. Agreeing to get rid of a poltergeist in order to make enough money to save her house, Verity finds herself in quite the drama-filled predicament.
The story itself is fast-paced and entertaining. I loved the mystery side of it, as well as the backstories of the ghosts. Although it deals with paranormal, it had a very realistic plot. I felt that the book did a good job of explaining things in a believable way without getting too detailed or technical.
Overall, this book has much to offer. It is a quick read, full of action, mystery, humor, and hints of scandalous love. If these things interest you, then Southern Spirits is the book for you.
action-adventure, audiobook, crooks, dogs, e-book, fiction, friendship, ghosts, historical-places-events, historical-figures, humor, law-enforcement, murder, mystery, myths-legends, pets, print-copy, relationships, suspense, thugs, whispersync, women-sleuths
Found this on BookGorilla for cheap, and it was so good that I want more of this series! Local graphic designer gets on the wrong side of local *royalty* and is now penniless, has good friends and supportive family, but has a pet skunk (?). Next, she acquires the ghost of a gangster from the Prohibition era, and attracts the unwilling attention of a local deputy who has unwillingly come to believe that a ghost is causing destruction in the former distillery he is renovating, and he wants to hire her ghost whispering services. There’s lots more, including murder, attempted murder, more ghosts, and real danger from a live perp. Mystery and suspense for sure, but lots of humor and no real horror or gratuitous
I love Angie Fox and the way she writes. The characters are wonderful and I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I’ve read them all and highly recommend them to anyone that likes the “spirit world “.
Great characters and fun plot.
It was a fun read. an escape from the every day-
Verity Long is out of work, out of money and down on her luck, to save her grandmother’s house, her roof over her head, she needs money and fast. With the town turned against her for leaving their local golden boy/hero at the altar Verity has no options until she starts seeing ghosts.
Verity, while cleaning out her grandmother’s belongings, comes across a vase that turns out to be the remains of a 1920’s gangster, now the gangster is trapped on her property and is adamant that he is innocent in a decades-old murder. Between this gangster, Ellis Wydell her fiance’s brother, who hires Verity to rid his beautiful historic property that is haunted by some of Sugarland Tennessee’s finest dead citizens, Verity has her hands full.
What follows is a delightful cozy mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed full of ghosts, Verity’s pet skunk, mayhem, and a side of romance. I loved Verity’s spunk, her supernatural sidekick a 1920’s gangster, Frankie, and of course Lucy the pet skunk.
I want to continue reading this series.

Southern Spirits is the first book in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries by Angie Fox. It features Verity Long, a skunk owning graphic designer who is now considered an outcast in home town after she left the favourite son of the town’s matriarch standing at the altar after she found out he was cheating on her. Now she has days to find $20,000 or lose her family home. Her life goes from bad to worse when she accidentally traps the spirit of Frankie the German, a gangster from the 1920’s on her property. What follows is an amusing tale filled with humorous dialogue and a mystery featuring poltergeists, ghosts and murder with an underlying hint of forbidden romance as Verity tries to raise the money to save her home
This was the first book from Angie Fox that I have read but it certainly won’t be the last. The concept of a ghost as a partner is a novel idea and I’m interested in seeing how the relationship develops not only between Verity and Frankie but between Verity and Ellis as well especially once his mother finds out – she just might give the poltergeist a run for her money.
