Southern Spirits is book one in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series by Angie Fox and narrated by Tavia Gilbert.
Verity is brave, witty, and not above putting herself in danger to help those that need it; even if they are dead. She’s a southern belle with all the charm and modern progressiveness.
When we start Verity is in a predicament. If you discovered your fiancee cheating would you have gone throw with the wedding? I’d have done what she did, yet the family she was tangled up with are considered the local society big wigs and the head of the house is trying to rune her.
In comes Frankie our inappropriate gangster ghost. It was totally an accident that Verity ends up with this character as her roommate, but I love it. He adds a lot of humor, character, and silliness to the story.
Ellis is her exes brother and the middle son of the family who made her life difficult. He choose to go his own way and is one of the local police officers. He’s not fond of Verity in the beginning.
I was captivated the moment I started listening to this novel. It was a lot of fun! The characters are hilarious, fun, and easy to connect with. Verity is in a situation that exceeds her and yet she’s determined to go all the way! The mystery is a red herring and keeps you guessing. The story isn’t a romance, yet Verity gets to know Ellis a little more. I liked that Ellis gradually realized who Verity is and I’m curious to see what might happen. I also loved the interactions with all the ghosts we meet and the investigation was entertaining.
Audio: This series is narrated by Tavia Gilbert. She is talented. All the characters came alive. I loved the voices for each character. They fit them and the southern charm and dialogue just jumped out.
I bought this audio a while back when Audible had a first in the series sale. I can’t believe it took me this long to discover the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I devoured this audio and I had so much fun that I can’t wait to start the next book. I highly recommend this paranormal cozy mystery.

Totally enjoyed!
My latest addiction comes in the form of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries by Angie Fox! Verity is such a fun character. I mean, how many heroines do you know who have a pet skunk and a dead gangster as sidekicks? This book had it all–action, humor, romance, and deep poignant moments too. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Y’all are missing out if you do not grab this one!! You’re welcome!
Assisted by a ghost, Verity Long goes on a treasure hunt to pay off her debts and along the way solves some cold-case murders.
In this fast-paced, paranormal mystery, Fox gives us a quick thinking, witty protagonist we really care about and utterly delightful secondary characters. Fox’s Southern setting are vivid. And her humor is spot on.
A light, fun read.
This is the first book in The Southern Ghost Hunters Mysteries. I like this book! It has a nice mix of mystery, humor and romance.
The book begins with out of work graphics designer, Verity, selling her family home in Sugarland, Tennessee to pay a debt to her ex’s family. She inadvertently traps the ghost of 20’s gangster, Frankie the German, on her property when she dumps his ashes on a rosebush! AND gains a hilarious sidekick!
Her relationship with Frankie leads her to a lucrative offer from her ex’s brother, Ellis. He is renovating an old building and needs Verity to get rid of a violent ghost. While trying to remove the ghost, Verity and Frankie uncover a decades old murder and the murderer is not above adding Verity and Ellis to the ghost realm to hide his crime.
If you like cozy mysteries, I think this one is a good choice
Awesome!!!
The spirits in this book have to be my favorite part. They act as normal people but have more paranormal traits that make it seem realistic and believable.
Angie Fox is one of my top authors, so when Southern Spirits came out, I immediately added it to my ‘to read’ list. As a bonus, I managed to snag it for free on my Kindle! As an additional bonus, I love the cover! I wouldn’t have been able to pass it up just for that alone. I do admit however, that when I first sat down and started reading it, I found it rushed and a bit silly. I feared that this may be the first book of hers that I didn’t care for and was starting to feel disappointed. That feeling dissipated though as I continued to read. The more I kept going, the more I enjoyed it. I absolutely loved Verity! She’s a great character full of spunk and silliness…..but not so much that she comes off as a total ditz. I especially love that she has a pet skunk named Lucy. For some reason, it suits her character. And I don’t mean that in a stinky way. The mystery itself is a bit predictable and the romance expected, but it didn’t take away from the story for me. The characters are fully developed and the book is well written. It’s a perfect fun, light-hearted read for a lazy day. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series.

Just Finished this book. The gangster ghost was very funny .
It was really a good book, you laugh you cried, with a twist at the end.
Come along and meet Lucy, the de-scented pet
skunk and Frankie the German, a gangster spirit
with live with Verity Long in the House she
inherited from her grandmother. But due to an
unfortunate incident she is about to lose the
house unless she can come up with an obscene
amount of money. She has sold all the furniture
in the house except the futon to sleep on.
And a odd vase…. or so she thinks until Verity
decides to clean the dust out. She discovers it
was an old urn so now not only does she have
her own ghostly sidekick but is able to see other
spirits as well.
In order to get the money to keep the house,
she teams up with the Ellis Wydell. Ellis owns a
historic property haunted by some of Sugarland,
Tennessee’s historic figures, the property once
housed the Southern Spirits brewery & distillery.
Ellis hires Verity to help with the paranormal entities.
The characters are all well written both the
small town human ones and the ghostly ones.
Besides solving the paranormal problem, a missing
girls body is recovered and the covered up murder
of a law enforcement officer uncovered.
It as a humorous, fast paced paranormal read.
Looking forward to reading the next in series book.
This is the first book in her Southern Ghost Hunter series, an urban fantasy mystery series with a lot of humor. Like, oh, I don’t know her pet skunk, the gangster ghost she conjures, and southern, small town eccentricities. While this book is on a lighter note than the others I’ve recommended, it’s just as good and so worth your time. Oh, and bonus? It’s free right now. 😉
Verity Long gains the ability to see spirits after accidently trapping a ghost on her property. This is a good southern paranormal cozy mystery that I enjoyed this cold weekend in front of the fireplace and in my room with a hot cup of coffee in the recliner and a blanket to keep me warm.
Angie Fox has nailed the unpredictable, unique cozy mystery genre! The combination of hilarious ghosts, an appealing heroine and a drop dead hero makes for a read you just have to finish before you do the laundry.
My son and I enjoy this series! It’s so much fun.
A fun paranormal mystery!
This book was amazing. I love the characters and the story line was outstanding. With every page read I kept wanting more. I just bought the second book to the series which I’m going to start reading as soon as I finish writing this. You won’t be disappointed when you read this.
I love this character. Loads of fun.
This book was so good I had to go out and get all the rest of her books! The writing grabbed me right from the first page. The book was very original, clever, and very unpredictable, an excellent read!
