Where did all Verity’s “friends” come from? I’ve read all but one of the books (Murder on the Sugarland Express) so I thought I was pretty up to date. So, where did all these friends come from? One is explained by the old adage “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. That’s my only poke at this story which is quite involved, more “meaty” than some of the books in this series.
This book had the most interesting of ghostly places that Verity has visited and I particularly like the scene in the movie theater with her unexpected companion. In fact, I really liked how that character factored into this book and the role the person played between Verity and others (both human and ghostly).
We also find out who killed Frankie at last and it was ultimately satisfying. As was how all the threads wove together by the end of the book. Gotta give this one 4.5/5.0. It’s really hard for me to give a straight “amazing” review. It takes a lot to wow me.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
BTW: Really glad there is someone else out there who gives their pets middle names. I gave two of my cats middle names over the years (usually spontaneously came out when I was scolding them) and my brother looked at me like I was crazy “You give your cats middle names???”

Not an unbiased review because I absolutely love the real star of this series–Lucille Desiree Long AKA Lucy, Verity’s pet skunk!
I’m not sure about stand-alone quality since I already know much from earlier books, but I think that it could do. This one reaches back into town history of the 20th century including one of the local churches. There’s more about Verity’s ghost mentor’s personal life, her ex-boyfriend’s good side, and her cop boyfriend’s uncertainties. And lots of ghosts. And suspense. And plot twists and red herrings. all with both situational and verbal humor! Of course I loved it!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Moose Island Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I love this series so much!!!! And this time we get more about Frankie past so it was definitively a book i could not miss and it did not disappoint at all.
We learn about Frankie past and his family. There are some moving moment. Verity is as funny as always and she really wants to do well for all the ghosts she meet even when it can be strange or dangerous….her adventures in the speakeasy was simply too funny and i can’t wait to see the barman come to get what she promised.
This instalment was fabulous i mean even Beau did better then his action were sometimes quite similar to some of a certain gangster so they do have things in common. Beau is trying to help and that’s telling a lot….Ellis ‘mother is still unsufferable ….Really the only oen that disappointed me a little was Ellis….how he could be so wrong with Verity…yes we do get his reasonning after but still he should know better. Lucy is as funny as always and a perfect shunk with good culinary taste even if she still love garbage too^^
a fabulous series to read in order to love it even more! to recommend
Southern Bred and Dead is the latest delightful entry in this series. Verity has her hands full solving several mysteries at once. Frankie needs Verity’s help confronting his killer. Verity needs to find out how her grandmothers friend died and what was so important about the photograph she had. And to top it all she needs to help Ellis deal with the dangers she faces in her line of work or lose him. This is a brilliantly twisted tale of murder and intrigue. I absolutely loved it!
Southern Bred and Dead is the 9th book in Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. Once again Verity is found to be helping her spectral friend Frankie. This time around, we learn more about his family history, as well as the history of his demise, and more history of the town of Sugarland itself. Additionally, Verity is working on a mystery closer to her own family, as her grandmother’s dear friend Jorie dies unexpectedly at a church fundraiser. Was it just an accident or die she have help? Add in some relationship angst for Verity and her beau Ellis, as well as some actual help from her former beau Beau, and we have a book full of energy and emotion.
I’m a huge fan of The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series and Southern Bred and Dead is another winner. This book is somewhat darker than previous books in the series, but there was still enough humor to make it an enjoyable read. I always look forward to spending time with my friends in Sugarland and I don’t think that will ever stop. My one disappointment in the last book was the lack of Lucy and this time around that is made up for big time. Big surprise in this one, Beau brought me the most joy. Who’d have thought that would ever happen? If you’re a mystery fan, do yourself a favor and pick up this fabulous new adventure in Sugarland. This book can stand alone, but to get the most out of it I highly recommend you read the entire series from the beginning.
I was provided with an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion review.
If you every wanted to know more about ghostly Frankie, this is the book for you.
We finally get some long awaited answers to his life story. And the way Ms Fox writes it is perfect. But now we wait to see if the answers Frankie received are enough. Enough for what you may ask? If you have read the other great books in this series you know what I am referring to. If not I would highly recommend reading them all.
Ms Fox doesn’t disappoint in her latest installment of the ghost hunter series.
Southern Bred and Dead by Angie Fox is another first-rate addition to the Southern Ghost Hunter series. The book grabbed my attention from the first chapter and I hated to put it down until I reached the end.
Although there were some humorous moments in the story, this book was more serious because of Frankie’s past and the current problems between Ellis and Verity. The plot moved smoothly with several ghosts making an appearance as Verity works on resolving an “accidental” death which reveals some shocking history in Sugarland. She is also helping Frankie to resolve his family issues and those encounters brought a smile to my face.
The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
