#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A big sweeping novel of friendship and marriage” (The Washington Post) by the celebrated author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered—and shadowed—by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy … group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.
Spanning two turbulent decades, South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest: a masterpiece from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.

Great author
I have only once met a Pat Conroy book I didn’t like. It was NOT this one.
An excellent wordsmith and great character development!
This is the first book I have read by Pat Conroy, and I fell in love! He writes with an almost lyrical quality, and I cannot wait to read everything he has written. One of my new all time favorite authors. A “must read” for everyone, in my opinion!
I might be biased, but Pat Conroy can do no wrong. This book has, literally, EVERYTHING!
Never met a Pat Conroy book I didn’t like! Love the Tidawater areas of the Carolinas and southern characters and their lives and charm.
I saw my own history through this S Caroliners brilliant and witty portrayal of characters over the past 50 years. On the edge of my seat through a lot of it while awed and laughing.
Pat Conroy wrote beautifully. The plot is interesting and moves at a good pace. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Great colorful characters and good story telling! You can always count on Mr Conroy to give an in-depth story with a top notch descriptive narrative. Haven’t read a book of his that I haven’t enjoyed!
I loved this book! To me the language is lyrical. It’s so beautifully written it lull’s you into the story line. I have to say I figured it out pretty early on but I enjoyed the process immensely as well as the ah ha moment for the main character. It’s family drama set in Charleston. Absolutely worth it if you have any understanding of what …
Conroys best
Pat Conroy was a wonderful writer! This book is a must read!
Read this book a long time ago….unfortunately I can’t remember enough of it to give an honest review! But I know I loved it, just like I have loved all the books Pat Conroy wrote that I have read. Best writer!
This is a roller coaster ride in book form! Pat Conroy tells an eclectic story about a group of southern teenagers into adulthood. His style of writing pulls you into 1969 ( their senior high school year) & beyond (into their adult lives) with the bonds that kept them together & the tragic episodes that gravitates you towards their eventful lives.
I thought this book was TRASH. I had to read it for a book club or I would have quit in the first chapter. The characters could not speak a sentence without foul, vulgar and profane language. It got very boring and childish. Yes, the characters started out as teenagers, but even 20 years later they still spoke the same. These friends …
I love his writing style.
One of the best books I have ever read.
