#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A big sweeping novel of friendship and marriage” (The Washington Post) by the celebrated author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered—and shadowed—by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy … group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.
Spanning two turbulent decades, South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest: a masterpiece from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.

A friend and I read this book and went to Charleston. There was a “South of Broad” tour which made the book come alive. Love Pat Conroy!
I thought I was going to like it at first but after a few chapters I decided I didn’t want to spend my reading time on it.
Too slow… Not up to what I expect from her!
Always end up loving Pat Conroy’s work; this is no exception. 4/5 of the way done and don’t want to finish it.
first part of the young boy and his paper route was great, then some really depressing characters entered the story, and the ending was almost a Keystone Cops in SF scenario…..this distracted from the message I think the author had, and was a disappointment form some of his previous books I have read.
Pat Conroy is an amazing writer. He makes one yearn to visit the Charleston South. I loved South of Broad and Beach Music and can’t wait to ready more of his work. Best fiction I’ve read this year.
Not my favorite Pat Conroy.
I have always loved Pat Conroy’s book. He’s very eloquent. His descriptions of places, emotions, family make you feel like you know these people. This is my second reading of this book. I have since been to many of the book’s locations & it feels more real & personal.
Anything by Pat Conroy is a joy!
I loved it after just having spent some time in Charleston.
Have read almost all of Pat Conroy’s books. Very informative about the south and each one I could hardly put it down.
i have never read anything i did not love by Pat Conroy…he tends to write about tragedy but in a way that is engrossing and ultimately resolved.
Very very well written.
Conroy is the best author of the 20th Century hands down. This book is a classic.
One of the best books I ever read.
Believable characters, great plot-line, and realistic dialogue—just what you’d expect from a Conroy read!
Conroy at his best.
This is a cartoon, not a novel.
Beautiful writing. Loved Charleston as a character in the book.
It was written by Pat Conroy – need I say more?!?
