The SECOND book in Edgar-winning author Julie Smith’s Rebecca Schwartz series.DEATH TURNS A TRICK, FIRST IN THIS SERIES, IS NOW AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK!A tasty treat of a San Francisco mystery—a crisp, tangy story you’re sure to get a rise out of.“…a brisk and breezy item, which—like sourdough itself—has its own distinctive and satisfying flavor.” -San Diego Union“… Diego Union
“…an awful lot of fun, and it will make you unbearably hungry for fresh-baked bread.” -San Jose Mercury-News
TO YOU, ITS JUST A FROZEN LUMP OF DOUGH; TO SOME, IT’S LIFE AND DEATH…
Especially to handsome Peter Martinelli, who wants to auction off the fabled sourdough starter from his family’s famous bakery. But who’d buy a frozen hunk of flour and water? Only, it turns out, every bakery in San Francisco, a national food conglomerate, and an upstart ringer with a mysterious backer.
Someone would even kill for it. And does.
Enter lawyer sleuth Rebecca Schwartz, whose client is her own partner, glamorous Chris Nicholson, Martinelli’s main squeeze before the ill-starred auction.
Rebecca noshes her way through the case in hilariously unorthodox style, tasting some great bread along the way, but also uncovering so many ancient jealousies, long-simmering feuds, and seething resentments that she barely escapes death by doughball.
NOTE: THIS STORY IS COMPLETELY REALITY-BASED! A SAN FRANCISCO BAKERY MADE PAGE ONE NEWS BY FREEZING THEIR STARTER –ONLY WITHOUT THE BLOODSHED.
The slapstick style, over-the-top action, and witty dialogue make Rebecca Schwartz an easy choice for fans of Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Bond, Dorothy Cannell, Elizabeth Peters, Sarah Strohmeyer, and Jennifer Crusie.

A fun read. The author keeps your interest in the activities in the book. It’s nice to read a book that isn’t full of foul language, yet keeps your interest because what happens in it, is really possible and plausible in real life.
I gave this book four out of five stars, because of believable characters and a well written plot. Rebecca’s Jewish mother is overbearing and just what you would imagine. She has some laugh out loud lines.
Laugh out loud funny story with believable characters. Great beach, fireside or uplifting quarantine read. Highly recommend! Looking forward to the next book. Happy reading!
Read it and you will be pleased with this reality-based work dealing with mouth-watering sourdough. Believe it.
I love Julie Smith’s books. Rebecca Schwartz is always an entertaining character. Her Skip Langdon series (set in New Orleans) is even better. Well worth the money.
Love all the novels written by Julie Smith!
My favorite series of Smith’s
Kept me interested through the whole book
All of Julie Smith’s novels are wonderful. This one has some fun twists and turns, with some humor.
A great little book with very interesting characters
Excellent characters, dialogue, and mystery plot. But why, oh, why does a smart, educated protagonist so stupidly confront a killer?!
Fun book, the ending may surprise you!
A kind of silly who-dunnit. I did not feel the characters had as much depth as those in some of Julie Smith’s other novels. It was good for a light read.
I found myself not believing the whole story and wishing I was finished with it.
Loved it.
This “mystery” lost me when the main character was left to be arrested by her newspaper friend so he could get a story in on time and then a “friendly” name calling scene was the final straw.
I loved this book!! The characters were great! I had a couple of late night reading this book because I just couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a mystery with great female leads!
I just could not get in to this stoey
Love Rebecca and her series, even though I don’t agree with her sister’s PP vocation.
This book was just ok. It was an easy read and cute but that’s about it.
