Engaging and Suspenseful. Great Read!
This is the second book I have read from this author, and was equally impressed. I love a story with a flawed protagonist who you can’t help but want to succeed, even though he shouldn’t! The characters are very realistic and the story of a trapped man trying to get out of an impossible situation is very believable. All in all, a great plot, great characters, excellent suspense and build up. Very enjoyable read and definitely recommended.
Cleverly crafted, tension-filled crime thriller.
An imaginative thriller from a very talented author. The twists and turns drag the reader (listener in this case) through an odyssey of emotions as we see the main character see-saw between victim and villain throughout the story. The clever twists and turns surprise right to the end, leaving you wanting more. The narrator’s style fit the protagonist’s character perfectly and provided the wind in your face for this roller coaster of emotions. An absolute must read or listen!
What a thrilling read! I was on the edge of my seat. Took me a few days to read but I managed to finish it no problem. Love how it takes place in the author’s own home country of the UK! I loved the whole idea of the book. The main character was in a messed up situation and did not know what to do. Reading the book you had to know what happened. After reading the book all I wondered was…now what! Cannot wait to read more from this author for sure.
Sour Blood is a criminal/thriller that draws the reader in and keeps them gripped to the pages from start to finish. As someone who spent a career in different aspects of the criminal justice system, I felt like the author understands something about the largest percentage of criminals; most criminals are not “completely bad people”. The focus of this story is on one main character and his former best friend. The main character sort of falls into a life of crime because of a personal addiction he had and his former friend used that against him to help himself out of his own predicament. When the main character finds himself being blackmailed by the former friend he once trusted, he dives into a deeper world of criminal activities. As the story gradually unfolds, the main character makes one wrong decision after another and continues to dig a deeper hole for himself. The Author did a good job of creating the kind of characters that are realistically human and multifaceted. Neither the main character nor his former best friend are completely evil or completely sainted. They are undeniably human and relatable. The twists throughout the story will keep the reader wanting to know what transpires next and the ending will allow the reader to anticipate a possible continuation.
Sour Blood is the author’s second dark novel. It’s is set in the UK, the author’s home turf, and deals with the worlds of high finance, real estate and legalized gambling. The hero, Nick Day, is being blackmailed over some indiscretions linked to his gambling addition, and has finally decided he’s had enough. He concocts an ingenious plan to deal with the blackmailer, an old “friend”, but fails to realize that one can get very dirty when one decides to fight in the mud. Twists and turns worthy of Hitchcock ensue as Nick flirts more and more with the dark side, while simultaneously finding new love. The denouement may seem to come out of left field, but the reader will be chagrined to realize that all the clues to mystery have been right there all along. Sour Blood is also notable for its accurate and informative details of setting, dialect, and day-to-day life in the UK. You’ll want to read it slowly so it doesn’t end, but you won’t be able to put it down.
