Well written, engaging, a totally engrossing read that doesn’t disappoint!
This was an exciting and intriguing journey that Bane took Nythan on. At first I wasn’t sure if Bane was real or imagined but as I kept on reading I realized that Bane was as real a character as Nathan was and just the implication of what he expected of Nythan was overwhelming to a whole new degree. The characters and places were well written and had been definitely thought out with a very distinct and disastrous direction. I have to say I am anxious to see if the cliffhanger may be answered in a next book perhaps? Good read!!

This was one strange read. It is thought provoking. This young man’s life is thoroughly changed. He becomes something indescribable. This book is not something I usually read but for something different to read this is the one.

I went into this book with very few expectations because I had never read this author before, and I didn’t know how I was going to like it. In fact, in the first few chapters (the chapters are short), I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to like it because it almost seemed like a YA book. Then something changed. The pacing picked up, and the plot changed a little. I was hooked. There are no real “good” or “bad” characters; there was much moral ambiguity. I liked the philosophy sprinkled throughout, too. This was not a cookie-cutter book and I liked it for that alone even besides the good writing and unique plot. This is interesting enough some readers will really like this, and there will be some that won’t. But I think it’s worth it. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
The main character of this story is student and cadet Nythan Dweinz, who has dreams and ambitions about what his future will be. He is staying in his aunt’s home, to look after it while she is away, when he hears some strange noises in the house. He ignores them to begin, putting it down to the house settling and creaking due to its age. When the noise repeats, he goes to check it out and comes across an emaciated man with a knife, who comes at him, telling him to get out of his house! Weird. He is badly injured on his forearm and also gets stabbed in the chest, until the man suddenly collapses upon him and a strange mist comes towards him. He suddenly feels stronger and manages to call emergency services, before collapsing. He awakes in the hospital and is questioned by the police, but was clearly defending himself and it turns out the man was a criminal. When another incident happens as he is getting chewed out by his superior officer, and the man falls down dead, he notices the mist coming to him more clearly. The police aren’t too impressed that a second man has now fallen dead in front of him and are questioning it.
He finds that any food and drink taste awful to him now and he is starting to starve, but also go mad with a voice inside his head telling him to take this person or that. The voice is saying that they are hungry and Nythan knows that if he gives in to this voice, then someone else is going to die! At his part time job, a customer comes in talking about a place to go and find themselves. He looks it up and sells everything to travel to the retreat in India, to try and get rid of what is inside him. Instead the monk tries to get him to accept that it is part of him! Good and evil are just two sides of the same, that he needs to accept both sides of himself, even though he tries to explain it is not a part of him, that it has invaded his body! He has to become both the Destroyer and the Creator, both Shiva and his Atma. He finds out that this other being is an ancient demon, known by many names over thousands of years, and it has been part of Nythan since he was born. This demon is known as the Soulstealer and has an enemy in a secret order known as the Ordo Solis, which has hunted it every time it found a new host.
The main and only aim of the Ordo Solis is to kill the host to stop the Soulstealer, thus saving the world! The Soulstealer set up three groups of supporters, the Raptors, the Unas and the Sanhe. They go to one of the meeting places he set up for the Raptors and after a slight hiccup, finally manages to get his supporters to take him in, feeding him and showing what they have done whilst they waited for him. He has a Gatekeeper at each location and now has his own bodyguards, as well as followers willing to sacrifice themselves for his continued existence and hunger. His hunger and need for souls will soon overwhelm the members of his support groups and he doesn’t want to diminish their numbers. So the main job of the Raptors and the Grand Coven, is to feed him with souls, but keep attention away from him, so the Ordo Solis don’t find him.
Parts of the story are hard to keep following as the discussions about God, good, evil, the Devil and so much more are talked about, with inputs from multiple faiths, in a background of fanatical followers and opponents. Nythan and the Soulstealer as Steven calls him, has to keep on collecting souls to eat and his appetite grows exponentially. Soon he grows from one a day to hundreds and in the end to whole cities. Bane allows Nythan to try his method for running his followers and his plan for freedom, once he eats enough souls to regain his full power, but as in the past, nothing is ever a smooth ride and the Ordo Solis have grown in numbers as well and are well placed to try and take him down. A battle for power, for souls and those who wish to stop him. The ultimate power hungry, world domination plot, no matter how he tries to frame it. Not an easy book to read for me, as some parts were too involved with the religion and cult like followers, and the constant chat between Nythan and Bane could be a bit much at times. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
