“I love you all. I’m so sorry.” After her mother disappeared, leaving only a cryptic note behind, strange things started happening to Lali Yavari. When one of her visions comes to life and the handsome, yet elusive, Kai Awana becomes a new … life and the handsome, yet elusive, Kai Awana becomes a new student at her school, Lali thinks she’s losing her mind.
Then she discovers a dangerous secret–she can astral project, a form of telepathy that allows her soul to leave her body and travel to dark realities. Kai is willing to make her a deal. He’ll help Lali find her mother if Lali uses her abilities to save his sister from Alea, an alternate realm that only Lali can reach.
But Lali isn’t a hero. She’s a target. Alea’s government is looking for people like her to use as experiments in a twisted lab. If Lali’s caught, it could mean losing everything…even her own life.

This is the first story I have read about Astral projection and it surely did not disappoint. While the beginning had more to desire, the drama, twists, betrayal and Astralis aspect I got later on in the book was absolutely beautiful and thrilling. While this is the first book I’ve read on the subject I still felt its originality and the author’s passion behind the pages.
The book had an interesting starting point with the missing mother and a strange man breaking in in the middle of the night only to disappear out of nowhere, making the main character, Lali, question her sanity. However it took a while for the story to keep moving after that. The first few chapters were more about introductions of the characters and their relationships, as well as a lot of rambling thoughts from Lali, than an actual developing plot line. While all of this is on some degree required to build up the story it wasn’t necessary to have it prioritized before the plot. It made the story stand still and a bit dull. I would have preferred more of a mix, having the introductions and Lali’s ramblings flow naturally together with the storyline.
It was the introduction of Kai that finally picked up the development and intrigue. I like the enemies twist and how rocky their “partnership” started of, not knowing if she could trust Kai and him ready to result to threats to get her help. I would have wanted more of a struggle for them working together and learning to trust each other since the progress to that felt a bit too quick with no real resolution. And with how they met and the threat dangling over Lali’s head it felt like it should have taken a lot more than it did for them to work things out. However this was later on very well worked on with it being revealed that Kai had not been telling the full truth and keeping big secrets from Lali, leading to betrayal and turmoil in their relationship.
While that whole drama was very satisfying one thing that annoyed me was Kai defensive reaction the Lali’s anger. After what he had done he should have felt very guilty and taken the harsh but true accusations she threw at him. Instead he got offended and almost acted like she should not only forgive him but thank him for saving her family. And he was the one who put them in harms way in the first place! The fact that he did not see how big of a psychopath he had been and did not seem to feel that much guilt for what he had done was just so unsatisfying. I did however like that Lali did see that and threw him out of both her house and life.
I am a sucker for romance so I do not wish Kai gone from future books. I just hope that in the next installment he embrace the villain part he played and make a big gesture to prove that he is a good guy and that he cares for Lali and not just himself and his sister. And of course I am excited to find out more about his sister and the world of Alea, as well as all the siblings powers and how they will play out with the story.
First off, I am in love with the style in which K.J. McPike writes. The story and wording has a way off pulling you right in from the get go making it very hard to put down. So good in fact, I had it read in two days.
Souls Untethered revolves around Lali, a young girl just turning sixteen who’s dealing with taking care of her younger siblings after their mother had abandoned them, when all of a sudden she begins to astral project, an ability that at first is terrifying and has her convinced she’s losing her mind. Then Kai enters her life, a boy with similar abilities to her own, and motives she’s unsure of, making her question the real reason her mother left. Entering into an uneasy alliance with Kai—she helps him find his sister, he helps her find her mother—she’s thrust into a world full of dangers and lies where she discovers who she is, while struggling with whether or not she can truly trust Kai.
This book had me on the edge of my seat with every twist and turn from the very beginning. The characters were believable and well written and the story was well thought out. I cannot wait for the next installment in The Souls Untethered Saga. Well done, K.J. McPike.

I really loved this story, but it took me a minute to get to the ‘love’ stage. It had a wonderful cast of characters, I love stories with siblings and the MC Lali has four great ones. Their relationships with each other seemed very fun, touching and believable as well. The magical system was also something quasi-sci-fi paranormal and very original-it’s refreshing to come across such a original concept in the genre.
