Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire–and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, … messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?
Soulless is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

This book is a great start to a wonderful five book series. I’ve never read steampunk before, but this was a first rate introduction to the genre. Well, I don’t know if it’s normal to have a supernatural element to traditional steampunk or not, but that’s what this is, and it’s fun! The characters are whimsical and likable also. There is not any …
Alexia is – as the title states – without a soul; her adventures in Victorian England are a brilliant mixture of satire, steampunk, and sassiness. Her mother is utterly at a loss on how to handle any of these things – or her daughter – and as a result spends her time alternately insulting and ignoring her eldest daughter in favor of her two …
Three different people emailed me within the space of a month, urgently asking me whether I had read Soulless, and telling me that it was very similar to my work. I replied three times that I had not read it, but that I would get to it soon. Now, I can safely say that I have read it, and I very much enjoyed it!
Soulless was a fun historical …
Gail Carriger’s “The Parasol Protectorate” series is absolutely one of my favorite series of all time. I’ve read all the books, prequels, sequels and novellas of the Parasol Protectorate universe multiple times each and I love them each and every time. Each one is like a delicious puff pastry – fluffy, sweet, and excellent for an afternoon tea.
My absolute favorite book. I recommed this to everyone! It made me laugh, sit on the edge of my seat, and feel for the characters. I love her humor. I haven’t connected to a book like this in a long time. I love it so much – I can’t say enough good things about it.
I absolutely ADORE Gail Carriger, and my favorite series of hers is the delightful 5-book Parasol Protectorate series, featuring the smart, witty, resourceful, and well-dressed Alexia Tarabotti.
Carriger’s brand of steampunk is paranormal romance’s posh cousin. She’s got werewolves, vampires, and other creatures of the night–but they’re all …
This Victorian paranormal romance is sexy, hilarious, and So. Much. Fun.
Great fun and a great read!
love this series. could do without the sex scenes, but great series
One of my favorite books of all time,
4.5/5 stars
What can I say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was surprised at how much I did because I had no clue what this book was about.
There were so many things that I absolutely loved about this book. I do not have one bad thing to say about it at all. Alexia Tarabotti is a soulless spinster who is very smart because she reads lots of …
Love the entire series!
Simply delightful. Read it in one sitting and then downloaded the next in the series-my first e-book purchase-because it was a holiday and I couldn’t wait for the bookstore to open to know what happened next!
This is a great book. My husband introduced me to it and I found it enthralling. I’ve now read all her books and also listened to her Audible books. Greatly recommend.
I think it took me about 50 pages to get past the language that I was not used to, having not read a book like this before. Once I did though, I was TOTALLY hooked. Alexia is one of those characters that you just instantly adore, as is Conall! And their back and forth throughout the book made the rest, at times, seem backstory. However, the rest …
This is a victorian era steam-punk book with magic, vampires, and werewolves. Alexia Tarabottie is the main character, she is a tall, outspoken lady with few prospects. her ability, turn the supernatural being normal is secret, she gets mixed up in a threat to the crown. it is well written, has a dry humor, and the story flows. it is a quick …
