Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire–and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, … messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?
Soulless is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

One should always carry a parasol or hat pin as a weapon…fun series, fun characters with lots of imagination. Definitely a classic when it comes to steampunk. Elizabeth Peters is the queen of cozy; I think Gail Carriger may well be the queen of steampunk.
A fun, witty romp through an alternate London rife with vampires and werewolves!
One of my top favorite books. I rarely read a book leave alone a series more than once. This one gets replayed.
Witty, romantic, supernatural, mystery!!
Highly recommend.
Really loved the Etiquette Series so I decided to try these. These are such great book’s. So far Ms. Gail Carriger hasn’t disappointed with such fun book’s to read or listen to.
Soulless
(Parasol Protectorate #1)
by Gail Carriger
I really enjoyed this book! I think everyone else has read it by now but me! I didn’t realize it had vampires and werewolves in it or I would have read it sooner! I thought it was just a romance.
It’s funny, has a good mystery, great characters, a fantasy, a romance, great world building, and …
My favorite series.
A delight of a romp with great characters, fun romance, and a huge amount of wit. I want to be Ms, Carriger when I grow up.
Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger was my first foray into the steampunk genre. I had no idea what to expect or whether I’d love it or hate it. It didn’t take long before I was hooked. Soulless is, apparently, a mix of genres including paranormal, historical, and fantasy, as well as steampunk. The combination is a winner!
For …
Soulless, the first book in the Parasol Protectorate, series is a frothy confection. It was my bookclub’s pick and is the perfect escapist read for weird times. If you are up for garrulous wolf-shifters, a saucy MC, steampunk with emphasis on the steam, Victorian high fashion, and combat parasols, you will enjoy the ride. Do not expect high brow …
I LOVE Soulless! The Parasol Protectorate is one of my all-time favourite series and Soulless is the pick of the bunch. Alexia Tarabotti is a sensible, parasol-wielding, lady of the ton, who is more concerned with sampling the delicacies at a ball than attracting a man. The mix of Victorian manners, paranormal characters and alternate timeline …
This is a fun and enjoyable steampunk/vampire/werewolf romp through Victorian England. Carriger’s worldbuilding helps to set this story apart from the many other were-vamp trope books, and the main character is a delight to read. Very much looking forward to the next book!
Steampunk is like Janis Joplin’s song “Mercedes Benz” – both are of great social import. Think about it. Where “Mercedes Benz” is all about greed, the greed of the rich, the greed of the poor, and the greed of the downtrodden, steampunk is about the never ending battle of science doing what it can or doing what it should. Themes of “great social …
A witty and engaging romp through the steampunky fog-bound streets of London, with werewolves, ghost, the occasional vampire, tea, and an obsession with hats that really should be curtailed
So much fantasy these days either is dark and doomy or flimsy and trivial. This is fun but not silly. The interaction of Victorian social strictures, vampires, werewolves, and hat shops is wonderful.
My romance with Gail Carriger continues. After devouring the Finishing school series (highly recommended) I tried the first book of The Parasol Protectorate series and adored it! Equally inventive and original, this book manages to fold in some romance and some flat-out scary moments with the fabulous whimsey. A must.
One of my favorite series of all times. I can read it over and over and still be delighted.
Firstly, this is an adult book there are adult themes. Soulless is the first book in the Parasol Protectorate series. This book begins the story of Alexia Tarabotti who is a preternatural in a supernatural world. Second, I love this book and I love the character, Alexia. Alexia has accepted that she was immediately “put on the shelf” and she will …
This book had me smiling all the way through! Gail’s characters had so much personality and life to them that it was easy to become entangled by the story. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the books in the The Parasol Protectorate series!
This book had me cracking up left and right. Witty and sarcastic and hilarious. Characters are so likable and vastly different, the mystery was fascinating and getting to know the world and magic was lots of fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great premise and well devised.
