Soulless at Sunset is book one in the Last Witch Standing series by Deanna Chase. It’s a paranormal investigation storyline with a side of romance.
In Soulless at Sunset we are treated to a kick-ass witch who teams up with a shifter. Phoebe and Dax work together to keep the peace among the paranormal residents in New Orleans.
I found Phoebe to be an interesting character. I like her skills, her knowledge, her witch abilities, and her determination to find and help her friends. I also liked the interactions between the characters.
Soulless at Sunset is an action-packed fast-paced story that spans 48 hours in Phoebe’s life as she races to save her best friend, Willow.
I picked this up as a freebie. The cover grabbed me and so, I thought I’d give this series a try. I didn’t read the blurb on goodreads; before starting this book and so, I didn’t know this was a spin-off of the authors Crescent City Fae series. The relationships and connections are set up in the Crescent City Fae series by the time we get to Soulless at Sunset. Their’s also a prequel, Bewitched By Moonlight, to Soulless at Sunset and its not necessary to read that prequel before this novel.
I’d have had a better time, not felt out of loop and liked this more, if I’d had read the previous series first. I feel you need to read Crescent City Fae series; before starting the Last Witch Standing series.
Rated: 3 Stars
Great story but left with a hanger.
Overall a good read. The plot was a little herky-Jerky at times and the ending seemed rushed., but I will read another.
don’t know a thing about this book. i accidentally clicked on it and i can’t ‘unclick’ it
great story and characters. fun to read and well written
I thought this was a pretty decent paranormal mystery, if a little stilted at times.
Loved the book. Will be buying 2nd book.
I didn’t make it past the first two pages. The wording turned me off.
Lots of twists and turns. Kept me on my toes with all the surprises.
Ha! Now that I’ve seen the blurb, I know this is a spin off…
Regardless, I loved this wild romp through Nola! Who knew so much danger could be jam-packed into two hellacious days?! I didn’t know what to make of Phoebe at first, but man, she grew on me fairly quick. She’s snarky and tough, and only those closest to her see the…I’ll say…slightly blunted edges to her personality. Her partner, Dax, can go into the swoony sweet category and kudos to him for holding his own with Phoebe, because this chick is a force of nature!
Overall, this was a highly entertaining read! I can’t believe I’ve missed this series and will rectify this immediately 🙂
Great start to this new series. Who? Pheobe. What? Arcane Paranormal Investigations Agent. Where? New Orleans.
Phoebe’s all dressed up at a charity gala. She there for her friend not working. Well, she pretty much was always alert and working. She should have been more alert. While she’s distracted her friends are kidnapped along with an important female Vampire.
So begins the most important case she’s ever had. Along with her new partner and ex-boyfriend, her kidnapped friend’s shifter wolf (a Shih Tzu dog) and some important contacts they work to unravel the deep secrets of New Orleans’ PNR world.
Action, steam, romance, loyalty, and betrayal. The author gives us another exciting series I can’t wait to continue reading.
I have been provided with a copy of Soulless at Sunset by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in the Last Witch Standing series and I just loved getting to reenter this world with Phoebe and her friends. This book just dragged me in and I was so disappointed when I turned the last page I just didn’t want it to end. This story just had me on the edge of my seat trying to guess what was going to take place next. I was just shocked time and time again and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
5 out of 5 stars
What do you do if you are a witch that can kick a shifters butt . You work for the Void to help keep the peace in New Orleans . Phoebe Kilsen is a vampire hunter and is smack dab in the middle of the war brewing in New Orleans . When her best friend and her husband go missing . It will take Phoebe and her sexy shifter partner Dax to find them . Trust is broken and secrets are betrayed . Will Phoebe and Dax be able to find their friends and stop the battle brewing in their town of Crescent City .
This is a brand new series for this author and I couldn’t put it down . I got sucked in from the first chapter. I love the characters Phoebe is kick butt and so sassy . She is such a strong woman and she takes on the strongest man and bring him to his knees . But she also has a curse . The author doesn’t really tell us about the curse but she alludes to it . I hope she brings more of the curse out in other books . I truly like Phoebe and her attitude. She is the friend you want in your corner when you need her . Now Dax well what can we say about him . He is hot , sexy and oh so yummy . He is a wolf shifter who has the hots for Phoebe and they are hot together oh so hot together . But he has secrets that he is trying to figure out . They make a great team and when push comes to shove they are there for each other and will tear down New Orleans to find each other and the ones they love .
This is one of those books that when you sit down to read it be prepared to be in the same spot until you are finished the book. I have never laughed so hard at some of the antics Phoebe and the guys get up too . They are such a fun read . The author puts them through so much at times you just want to hug them and tell them that everything will be ok. This is a spin off series of the Crescent City Faes series but you don’t need to know them to read this series . The characters are fresh and fun and you will love to read them . There is a mystery , intrigue and sexy times . You will laugh and maybe shed a tear or two . Also you might throw you kindle across the room cause well lets just say Dax could peeve you off a bit but he does redeem himself . So if you want a great series that will keep you glued to your seat until you are done . This is the series for you . You should add this series to you fall reading list . You will not be disappointed .
Soulless at Sunset by Deana Chase is the first book in A Last Witch Standing series. Phoebe Kilsen is a witch in New Orleans, Louisiana where she works for the Void catching rogue vampires and shifts who have broken the law. Her new work partner is Dax Marrok, a shifter. Lately shifters and vampires have been disappearing from the city which has caused tensions to rise among the two sects. At a ball to benefit a new supernatural hospital, Phoebe’s best friend, Willow and her husband are kidnapped. Then Pandora, Eadric Allcot’s consort and second most powerful vampire in the city, is also taken. Her friend is to be sacrifice, but Phoebe has no intention of letting that happen. She teams up with Allcot to locate and recover Pandora, Willow and Talisen. Dax is upset (and hurt) that Phoebe went with Allcot instead of him, but he can tell that something is brewing within the Crimson Valley Wolf Pack. Will Phoebe save her friend in time?
Soulless at Sunset is a fast-paced novel full of action, suspense, vampires, shifters, witches, magic, tension, and mayhem. I thought it was well-written and engaging. The plot is complex full of twists and turns. You just never know what will happen next (which I just love). Readers of the Crescent City Fae series will recognize Phoebe Kilsen. You do not, though, need to read that series before embarking on the books in A Last Witch Standing series. I appreciate that Phoebe is a strong, sexy and smart female character. Dax is a handsome (oh la la), powerful and intelligent male character who is intensely attracted to Phoebe. The chemistry between the two characters is palpable. I do want to forewarn readers that unlike Deanna Chase’s other novels, Soulless at Sunset does contain foul language (a lot of it) and intimate scenes. If you enjoy action packed paranormal novels, then you want to read Soulless at Sunset.
I’ve been reading Ms. Chase for a while, and while I haven’t read everything she’s written, I’ve loved everything I’ve read that she’s written. Well, this book just blew those out of the water. Not only was it well-written, I loved the complexity of the plot, the great characters, the chemistry between the characters (especially Dax and Phoebe), and the action. I literally read this book in one setting as I couldn’t wait to find out what has going to happen next. For some reason, I found the more serious tone of the book captivating. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t love her lighter books, because I most definitely do, but this one just seemed to hit all my urban fantasy buttons. If you are a fan of Ms. Chase’s and love urban fantasy, pick this one up; you’ll love it! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
