One of America’s leading Christian thinkers interweaves the story of his own struggle to reclaim his beliefs with inspiring portraits of people who have succeeded in the pursuit of an authentic faith. In Soul Survivor, Philip Yancey charts his spiritual pilgrimage through the influence of key individuals: “These are the people who ushered me into the Kingdom. In many ways, they are why I remain … ways, they are why I remain a Christian today, and I want to introduce them to other spiritual seekers.”
Yancey interweaves his own journey with fascinating stories of those who modeled for him a life-enhancing rather than a life-constricting faith: Dr. Paul Brand, G. K. Chesterton, Annie Dillard, Frederick Buechner, C. Everett Koop, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Henri Nouwen, John Donne, Mahatma Gandi, Shusaku Endo, Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert COles.
Readers will find these inspiring portraits both nurture and challenge for their own understanding of authentic faith. Yancey fans will devour these new glimpses of how he has held onto faith while acknowledging with utter honesty its inherent difficulties. New Yancey readers will be drawn in by the theme of faith versus religion and drawn along a compelling narrative of signposts on a spiritual journey.
Soul Survivor offers illuminating and critically important insights into true Christianity, which will enrich the lives of veteran believers and cautious seekers alike.

I highly recommend this book as it describes the people who helped shape the Author’s spiritual life!
This is the book to read if you question your faith. Philip Yancey is authentic in his questions and struggles. The people he writes about are historical and present day and each of their stories can give one insight. This book is fantastic!!!
Philip Yancey’s Soul Survivor is not simply the best book I’ve read this year, I added it to the list of books I feel every Christian should read. At its core this is a story of Yancey’s own growth in faith, told through the lens of biographies of the people who have impacted him. Each chapter outlines the life and work of someone who impacted Yancey’s development in faith. But these chapters are not written to be objective they are explicitly from Yancey’s view, and he is a gifted writer who is able to draw the reader deep into his own experience with his subject. for more https://pwesleygeorge.wordpress.com/2019/09/13/soul-survivor/
Such an honest writer!
A writer devoting one chapter to a writer (or historical figure) who has influenced his writing and his personal faith. I’ve enjoyed his insights and have collected a list of books I want to read next. Excellent.
Great book to revive your spiritual journey.
I am really enjoying this book. Is deep and thought provoking.
Yancy relates the life stories of many Christians who inspired him to return to church after a harmful church experience,
Yancey is a great read. He challenges my soul and my faith with each book.
This was an inspiring read as he share brief biographies of individuals who made an impact on his life.
This will challenge you to see the pathway that you have traversed to arrive where you are at today and about the people who have inspired you.
If I could give this book 6 stars I would. Philip Yancey is one of the most honest Christian writers I have read. The book has been inspirational to me and given me lots to think about and more books to read. It is my first Yancey book to read but will not be the last.
Phillip Yancey highlights 13 people in the book — all of which had a profound influence on his own personal spiritual walk with God. Many of these people Phillip knew personally or at least met to interview. He also studied their lives and books that were written. These insights will challenge any preconceived ideas you have had about them. Dr. Paul Brand, G K Chesterton, Annie Dillard, Frederick Buechner, C Everett Koop Leo Tolstoy, Fyedor Dostoevsky, Henri Nouwen, John Donne, Mahatima Gandi, Shusaku Endo, Marin Luther King, Jr, Robert Coles.
