Another wonderful installment in the Deerbourne Inn series. Here we find Charlotte, who is the definition of a troubled soul. Since the disappearance of her sister and the ending of what has to be described as a useless marriage, she’s stuck at a crossroads. Unable to move forward, ensnared in one place physically and emotionally. Being almost dragged out of her personal prison by her best friend, she finds herself spending a week at this wonderful inn.
The story is superbly paced, well written, captivating, dramatic and satisfying to the reader. The author is able to quickly evoke a feeling of empathy for both poor Charlotte and the feisty Matiu. The inn provides the base that allows Charlotte to both close off the past and move forward into an amazing future. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t rush to get a sequel of the two of them dealing with life together in New Zealand. Detailed, wonderfully described. A journey that takes the reader through all the twists and turns and ends in the bright sunshine of hope.
My Rating: 5 stars
Charlotte has been grieving for 5 years, because of her younger sister’s dissapperance. Her friends invite her to come along with them to Dearborn Inn Vermont. They try to help get her out of her depression. There she met Matiu? from New Zealand. He pushes her to extend herself past her own boundaries. Her resolve is tested when a crisis comes up. This is a story of trust, forgiving, rediscovering, friendship.and love.
The story is set in the US. The narrator had an accent. That confused me. But that being said Rebecca McKernan narration of this story was good.

**Audiobook Review** I was given a copy of this audio book for an honest review. I really enjoyed listening to this book. It is well written by Jean Grant & narrated beautifully by Rebecca McKernan. This was such a deep and beautiful story! It’s a wonderful story full of healing & finding love.
This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by Jean M. Grant. It was a nice, quick story that didn’t feel rushed, though there weren’t many details about characters other than the main two.
I listened to the Audible version. Rebecca McKernan had a solid performance with her narration. I didn’t mind her accent, but because of the accent, I did wonder if the setting would remain in the United States throughout the book.

The latest Deerbourn Inn addition, SOUL OF THE STORM by Author Jean Grant is a lovely story about loss, learning to trust again, and moving on.
When Charlotte MacGregor’s sister, Julie, disappeared 5 years ago during a hiking trip in South America, Charlotte’s life came to a standstill. She would have been with her sister if not for her husband’s selfish edict she remain home with him. Now, five years later and with her husband no longer a factor in her life, Charlotte still hasn’t forgiven herself for not being with her sister.
When best friend Veronica mentions a week trip to the charming town of Willow Springs, Charlotte reluctantly agrees to go. The anniversary of Julie’s disappearance is just days away and all Charlotte wants to do is wallow at home. Veronica, bless her, will not allow that.
Matiu Christiansen is a cook at the Inn, plus works at several other jobs, and finds himself drawn to Charlotte in ways in which he hasn’t been drawn to a woman in some time. He knows there’s no good reason to start anything with her romantically, but can’t fight the feelings emerging within him every time they’re together.
He wears down Charlotte’s reluctance and helps lift her dour mood as the anniversary approaches and the two begin a relationship both feel is destined, but that neither one is ready for.
This book was simply lovely.
I read it in one sitting because I became so invested in the characters I simply had to know if they were going to achieve an HEA or go their separate ways. Jean Grant’s addition to the Deerbourne Inn series is a heartfelt love letter to how you deal with loss and guilt, how love can help you remember the good times, and how you can move on and live again.
I highly recommend this wonderful read.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this as an Arc.
He’s a kiwi transplanted to the states trying to find his way home, she’s a teacher on vacation mourning an old loss, and together they rescue one another. If you love sweet dogs, mountains, and happily-ever-after, this is a very satisfying read.
I haven’t read anything by this author before but I wasn’t disappointed with this first read. It is well written and engaging. The book has a heartwarming story of love, pain and surviving life. I loved the main characters Matiu and Charlotte they are endearing and you want them to succeed and find love. I love the way the book looks at grief and belonging through their experiences. The book has a beautiful setting and also delves into the magic of Matiu’s homeland. After reading the book I feel a great desire to visit New Zealand because of the beautiful insights into the nature and culture of the country. I will definitely be reading more from Grant in the future.
A well written and engaging story. I love the author’s writing style and became totally immersed in the characters and their story. Definitely a page turner story and one I do highly reccommend.
This is a story about Charlotte who finds it difficult to experience life since her sister’s death 5 years ago. While on spring break in Vermont with her friend Veronica and her husband Charlotte meets a New Zealander Matiu. Their love story is sweeet and heat warming. I picked up Soul of the Storm because I love Vermont. Having hiked and kayaked in the beautiful state the story came to life for me. I wasn’t expecting such an uplifting story-I highly recommend this inspirational book.
this was a really great book! she goes back to the one place her sister went missing from. thats where she meets the multi job man who has no time for dating or woman. you have to read to find out what happens.
Captivating story from beginning to end, full of heartache, romance, action, fear and new beginnings. I absolutely loved the main characters and the scenery descriptions were breathtaking. Charlotte was a damaged woman from sorrow, agony and depression and I savored how Matiu was able to help her remember. Marvelous writing by Jean M. Grant, taking me places I’ve never been before. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book.
A sweet story of second chances and finding love when neither was looking for it. I really enjoyed the story and loved the characters.
This is the my first read from Jean M. Grant. I really enjoyed this read.
I love that this was based in New Zealand and her description pulled me in from the beginning.
This was a fantastic read it’s a easy flow.
I highly recommend this book.
Romance is not my typical read, however, I’ve read Grant before and enjoyed her past novels, so I picked up Soul of the Storm. I was not disappointed. I easily fell in love with her two main characters, Matiu and Charlotte, and also adored minor characters, in particular Charlotte’s best friend, Veronica.
Grant’s character development was great. Her writing, excellent. Her storyline, engaging. She explained the background story slowly and interestingly, boosting my curiosity. That tailored release coupled with a budding romance progressing to a burn, kept me turning pages.
This is a wonderful romance. I look forward to reading more by Grant.
I love this story from the beginning of Charlotte and her best friend Veronica and her husband. Going away for spring break I hopes of having fun. And hoping Charlotte would learn to live again after five years since losing her sister. Matiu really Drew’s her in even when she rather just hide and be alone. I love these two together and it really made the book worth reading.
I absolutely love this series and cannot stop reading! Charlotte and Matiu’s story is definitely one of my favorites of this series!
I thought this was a sweet book. First of all, I loved getting a bit of Matiu’s Kiwi slang. I loved Matiu’s character. I loved how he got Charlotte to slowly come out of her grief and to live again. She also has a free and giving spirit that I envy. I think Matiu was my kind of man: hardworking, family oriented, can cook, sweet with just a little push to go with his supportive nature. His plans to help support his family were admirable. I loved getting to know a little about his culture, especially when it came to grief.
Charlotte MacGregor has been grieving for sister for five years. Throwing herself into work, she finds satisfaction trying to forget what happened and the pain she feels. For spring break Charlette goes to Willow Springs for vacation to escape her depression with her best friend and her husband. She brings work thinking she may be busy, but she meets Mathiu who is a sports enthusiast. Mathiu feels connected to her and tries to get her to go hiking. He is confused when she pushes back, but eventually she does go. Her depression and the negative feelings from her sister’s death make her burrow into work, but Mathiu has helped her to come out of her shell. The two find they are attracted to one another. Mathiu has his own problems too and knows that he must save enough money to open the business he dreams of opening in New Zealand. The book was enjoyable to read.
Its been 5 years and Charlotte still feels guilt about her sister disappearance. If she didn’t listen to her now ex husband, julie would still be alive. Its close to the 5 year anniversary of Julies disappearance and she just wants to left at home. Her friend Veronica talks her into a mini vacation. She goes and all she wants to do is stay in her room. Matiu works at the inn and gets Charlotte to go outside and explore. Great read.
Soul of the Storm is the 1st book that I have read by Jean M Grant. I enjoyed this story about Loss & Learning to Trust Again & couldn’t put it down until the end. I recommend this book and can’t wait to read another one of her books.
