Augustus Cain faces a past he wants to forget, a present without prospect or fortune, and an uncertain future marred by the loss of his most prized possession: the horse that has been his working companion for years. He is also a man haunted by a terrible skill—the ability to track people who don’t want to be found. Rosetta is a runaway slave fueled by the passion and determination only a mother … a mother can feel. She bears the scars—inside and out—of a life lived in servitude to a cruel and unforgiving master. Her flight is her one shot at freedom, and she would rather die than return to the living hell that she has left behind.
In the perilous years before the Civil War, the fates of these two remarkable people will intertwine in an extraordinary adventure—a journey of hardship and redemption that will take them from Virginia to Boston and back—and one that will become an extraordinary test of character and will, mercy and compassion. It is an odyssey that will change them both forever.
Soul Catcher is a dazzling tapestry of imagination and character, atmosphere and emotion. Poignant and utterly compelling, it is a story to be savored and remembered.

Realistic portrayal of antebellum America through the eyes of all: slaves, slave owners, slavery supporters, slave catchers, abolitionist, etc.
I loved this book. It took me a chapter or two to really get into it but then I was hooked. The characters are great and I really got into their stories. When I finished the book I was bummed out wanting to know what happened next with them.
Well written, intriguing topic. Loved the characters. A surprise find and a great read…
Slavery: One on One
Set between the Mexican and Civil War eras, this novel covers relationships of white versus black during the lively period of runaway slaves and slave catchers shortly before the start of the Civil War. Capturing and returning runaway slaves was an admired pursuit for many men, some with a simplistic view of its legality, while …
I couldn’t finish it. It was to vulgar and rough
Interesting read. Keeps you wondering how it will end
Good insight into paths of slavery in the South!
Brings history to life in a fictional way but reveals what slavery wrought.
Soul Catcher was a surprise and well worth the read. It is a new slant on the struggle of a man who makes his living chasing runaway slaves. Heartfelt and deep character studies throughout.
This is good historical fiction with a flawed protagonist struggling with his own humanity in a cruel and unforgiving part of American history.
Pretty good. Didn’t love it, but it was a good story all in all. Had a hard time relating to the main male character who starts out being pretty despicable, but ends up being ok by the end.
This is a biography of a most unusual man who literally dedicated his whole life and made untold sacrifices to record the lives of native American tribes in the United States and Canada, by photography, sound recording of speech and music, and motion pictures in an era when these tasks were extremely difficult. His life was so unusual that it is …
I wasn’t satisfied with the ending, but it was probably inevitable. An interesting take on the whole slave trade as promised in the preview.
Enkoyed
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was the way it ended. The story line was great and somewhat educational. The characters believable. I almost got the impression that the author didn’t want an ending that most readers could figure out but in the process took away from the overall quality of the read with the ending used.
A lovely story about struggling forces within a person and how one deals with them.
This is a fabulous book/adventure about an area I was not familiar with – the escaped slave return business and the human slime that engaged in it. It is exciting and a great love affair.
best semi-historical novel
The book is a realistic portrait of pre civil war America. The politics, the language, the weapons all seemed time appropriate.
The characters and the plot are well developed. A very good read
This is a good story about slave catchers and the attitudes in the United States circa 1850 about slavery and African-Americans. Very well written with engaging characters with detailed flashbacks that give depth. I had trouble putting in down once I started reading.
