This award-winning novel of love, survival, and agonizing regret in post–WWII Brooklyn “belongs on that small shelf reserved for American masterpieces” (The Washington Post Book World). Winner of the National Book Award and a modern classic, Sophie’s Choice centers on three characters: Stingo, a sexually frustrated aspiring novelist; Nathan, his charismatic but violent Jewish neighbor; and … but violent Jewish neighbor; and Sophie, an Auschwitz survivor who is Nathan’s lover. Their entanglement in one another’s lives will build to a stirring revelation of agonizing secrets that will change them forever.
Poetic in its execution, and epic in its emotional sweep, Sophie’s Choice explores the good and evil of humanity through Stingo’s burgeoning worldliness, Nathan’s volatile personality, and Sophie’s tragic past. Mixing elements from Styron’s own experience with themes of the Holocaust and the history of slavery in the American South, the novel is a profound and haunting human drama, representing Styron at the pinnacle of his literary brilliance.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.

One of my top three favorite books. A must for readers of WW2 fiction. A classic. As a writer, I aspire to be William Styron (except not male nor dead). Beautiful writing; moral center.
A little too slow for me
I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll try again later.
Vulgar form beginning ti end!
I started this book but it didn’t hold my interest, so I didn’t finish it.
After a grueling sixty or so pages, I deleted it from my Kindle. Just not my kind of characters…..
A true classic. William Styron is one of the most outstanding writers of the 20th century.
Styron is just a great writer. No more needs to be said.
I did not like this book. I don’t like giving bad reviews but this book is very wordy and while the subject matter should have been interesting it failed in that regard. The characters are shallow and really not very likeable including the heroine who should have at least been a sympathetic character, but was not. It was just a sluggish read.
Ok
and more.
Haunting. Heartbreaking.
Wonderful writer in top form on subjects of lasting interest and importance.
A true classic by a superb story teller. Not an easy “breeze through it” book but well worth the effort. Interesting and compelling characters that will stay with you long after you have finished reading. The lead actors from the movie version perfectly fit you mental image of the characters from the book.
Very wordy but a good read.
Couldn’t put it down!
I’ve read this book several times and each time it touches my heart. I taught it in my accelerated English classes for years. The students were very moved by it as well. I highly recommend it. S. T. Pierce
Haven’t read it!
A wonderfully disturbing book. William Styron’s prose is as fine as any author I’ve read and the story of Sophie, Nathan, and Stingo is as enthralling as it is tragic. This book touches on so many issues ranging from the Holocaust, suicide, mental illness, racial and ethnic stereotypes it’s hard to know where to start. Suffice it to say that …
Though I found the sex scenes too graphic, the writing was good. It is a very heavy topic and a very sad read
