Two handsome brothers. An age-old Appalachian feud. And a love that may tear the Norgaard family apart. After the tragic death of her husband, Aven Norgaard is beckoned to give up her life in Norway to become a housekeeper in the rugged hills of nineteenth-century Appalachia. Upon arrival, she finds herself in the home of her late husband’s cousins–three brothers who make a living by brewing … brewing hard cider on their three-hundred-acre farm. Yet even as a stranger in a foreign land, Aven has hope to build a new life in this tight-knit family.
But her unassuming beauty disrupts the bond between the brothers. The youngest two both desire her hand, and Aven is caught in the middle, unsure where–and whether–to offer her affection. While Haakon is bold and passionate, it is Thor who casts the greatest spell upon her. Though Deaf, mute, and dependent on hard drink to cope with his silent pain, Thor possesses a sobering strength.
As autumn ushers in the apple harvest, the rift between Thor and Haakon deepens and Aven faces a choice that risks hearts. Will two brothers’ longing for her quiet spirit tear apart a family? Can she find a tender belonging in this remote, rugged, and unfamiliar world?
A haunting tale of struggle and redemption, Sons of Blackbird Mountain is a portrait of grace in a world where the broken may find new life through the healing mercy of love.

I’ve found a new favorite author
Loved this book ,couldn’t put it down ,had to see what happened.
loved this book.
Loved the characters and story so much I read all in the series
Joanne Bischof is incredibly skilled at creating complex heroes and emotionally-driven plot lines that hook the reader’s heart. A feat she has accomplished once again with “Sons of Blackbird Mountain.”
I was blown away by this story! The writing is skillful and beautiful. The plot is well-paced and interesting. The setting is richly conveyed to the imagination, and the characters are emotionally compelling. I especially love the hero, Thor. It was a joy to learn about the history of American Sign Language through his story. Highly recommend!
Loved seeing a deaf person in the lead. The author did an outstanding job of handling conversations with the man. It was tragic to see the KKK in action, but even there the author presented well rounded characters, showing how they came to be who they were. I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series from a talented author.
Totally enjoyed it.
One of those books where you hate to see it come to an end. Fortunately, there’s a sequel!
Great book!! You will love it!! don’t want to give away anything but I really recommend it
I loved this book and most definitely the one after it: The Daughters of the Northern Shores (I believe is what it’s called)! The author states in the second book that she was going to write one character out in the first book, but the next book is about his redemption, which is something so many need! These are also about his deaf brother and we learn some of what it’s like to live a life with deafness. They come from a strong stock and have strong beliefs! I think you’ll like them both, I hope you can as much as I did! They were a blessing to me! I cried at the end of the second one, hoping the same could happen to a few members of my family!
Unusual characters make unusual choices as they face hard situations.
I love to get my history thru novels. This book did just that. The horrors of the Ku Klux Clan, how people who are deaf were taught were presented this book. You’ll enjoy reading it.
Loved the characters! Had to go back and read book #2 again. Hated to see the story end.
These are some of my all-time favorite characters, other than Jane Austen’s, complete with flaws and hope.
This author…one of my tops of ALL times!
As I LOVE inspirational, historical romance (clean)….
The story & setting were new & informative. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
x80x9cSons of Blackbird Mountainx80x9d is a lovely, moving love story which takes place dyring the late 1800s in Appalachia. The book was obviously studiously researched. As someone who grew up in the foothills of the NC Appalachians, I found most of the details to be accurate, as I know them. I was especially impressed that one of the primary characters is a deaf and mute man. In x80x9cSons of Blackbird Mountain,x80x9d I learned about something that I had never heard of – the controversy of oralism vs. ASL (Sign Language), as the best way for communication with people who cannot hear. Bischoff informs readers, without making us feel like we are reading a research paper. I could have done without the politics, which were unnecessary and bogged things down a couple times. But overall, it was a very good book. I will probably be purchasing more of her books in the future, and I have already recommended this one to friends.
One of my favorite books of this year; I’m still thinking about it weeks later. Great characters, great plot, action packed and inspirational, I’ve found my new favorite author.
Beautiful characters and a sweet story full of heartache and hope. Originally, I started this story because I wanted to see how the author would handle a deaf character (wonderfully, by the way), but she quickly drew me into the story and made me care about all three brothers and the women who surrounded them who don’t scare easy and know how to love fiercely. I read because I wanted to know what happened, and I looked forward to picking up the book whenever I had a chance.
With this book I felt all emotions. I absolutely loved this book. I could not put it down and when I finished I wanted more.
