“He saw a bare arm first, the hand palm up with fingers curled inwards. Then he stopped and took a few breaths. He could hear the two constables making arrangements before they separated, one saying he’d bring the other some tape from the car, and then it was just the summer morning quiet again.”Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, … DCI Reeve, you’ll be first there, it’s all yours, you’re the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn out cliché like that…

A perfect read.
Totally enjoyed this series!!!
I always enjoy this author,
Great Detective novel. Suspenseful, Interesting.
Loved this book, so many well developed characters. I didn’t guess the end which is always a plus. Great writing, excellent story, I couldn’t put it down!
A very enjoyable read. Well done!
Totally unexpected. Could not put it down.
Disappointed. Just too much detail at beginning! Could not get into it after about a fourth of the book
Well thought and smartly written. Every detail falls in place and there are no hanging questions. DI Waters is well rounded character, with all his flaws and plusses. He carries the story on his able shoulders
Loved the DC Smith series, and this is a worthy continuation with many of the characters. I read the next in this series and will look forward to more!
I loved it!!, I plan to go to the beginning of the series with Smith,,,,Just great writing.
I learned about analysis, how people think, relationships, and priorities. Thank you.
An enjoyable British who-dun-it, with downplayed humor and surprises along the way. The one thing I could not forgive, however, was when the prime , mentally-challenged murder suspect looks at the victim’s picture and says :” I think she’s dead”, nobody asked : “
What makes you think so?” Instead, plans are made to arrest the suspect. To me, that’s a weakness. But the rest of the story, especially as the story progresses, redeems itself . Eventually, despite this unforgivable sin, the book is a good enough read that I found myself researching other books in the series.
Could not get into this book. I found it repetitive in that it kept trying to constantly remind you what the story was about. I only read 2 chapters, failed to draw me in.
Well-done British police procedural. Good characters.
This was a terrific mystery. I loved the interplay between police and how the jealousies play out in an investigation. One man made a difference. Men and women shown as equals and working together well. The portrayal of a downs syndrome suspect was sympathetic and realistic.
Much more depth than normal who-done-it.
I will read anything Peter Grainger writes – he never fails to transport me to places I’d never been but would love to experience, minus the murder and mayhem! His characters are always interesting and relatable, and I never have to wonder if I’ll enjoy the read – I always do.
This bool is well written with a good story line, great characters, intrigue, and humor. Couldn’t ask for more!
This author was new to me. If you haven’t read him yet run to the book store or your favorite online seller of ebooks and purchase it. This is a follow up to the DC Smith books and I am currently going through all of those books. Wonderful books. Great dialogue and great characters.
