“He saw a bare arm first, the hand palm up with fingers curled inwards. Then he stopped and took a few breaths. He could hear the two constables making arrangements before they separated, one saying he’d bring the other some tape from the car, and then it was just the summer morning quiet again.”Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, … DCI Reeve, you’ll be first there, it’s all yours, you’re the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn out cliché like that…

Very disappointing, did not finish this book
It was excellent. A really good story with a twist.
This is the latest edition to a wonderful series. Peter Grainger is a great writer, worth your time.
This is the first book by Peter Grainger that I have read. It had me interested from the start. It certainly is a police procedural. The beginning was more like a primer on police procedures than the start of a mystery. A little too much for my taste. In every other respect it was annoyance read other with a pleasing writing style and well developed characters. I’ll try another to see where he takes it.
This was an absorbing read, it was very inciteful and gave what I is think how the police go about solving crime. I found it hard to put down, my one and only criticism is the changing names of towns, kings lake for Kings Lynn and hunston for Hunstanton [ hunston is how it is pronounced in east Anglia] yes I am being pedantic and it did not spoil my opinion of the story
Good main characters, detailed, made you feel you were working with them.
Too much content was concerned with procedures
A good mystery
I’m sorry, i couldn’t finish it. It was very realistic if you want a primer on how to conduct an investigation, but a little tedious. I got bored about halfway through.
Definitely different suspect. I thought they portrayed him really well. Interesting, kept you guessing.
Was a nice mystery with a few twists and turns. But did get rather long and involved in spots.
It was incredible. What a plot!!!
Great story that kept me at the edge of my seat throughout to book.
I had a hard time keeping interested for parts of this, but it was hard for me to concentrate with all the news of corona virus and plummeting stocks. It did have a good plot. Just seemed a little drawn out.
Too many police characters . Too disjointed.
Not finished yet and can’t wait to get back to reading it
I love British police procedurals. This was one the best I have read. Realistic, surprising, wonderfully unusual characters. Will definitely follow this author.
