After reading the first book in this series, Death at Peony House, I was quite excited to start the second book. Which was good, because in my enthusiasm about the concept I had accepted review copies of the first three books in the series and I hate it when I have to conclude that I took something I shouldn’t have taken. The idea was that I would make a brief start with this book yesterday and then finish tomorrow. Well, I already finished today.
I might like this second book even more than the first book. Mostly because there aren’t too many characters involved. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any issues with many characters in a book, but the downside is that it’s hard to get to know them and to figure out what makes them tick. In this book we not only get to know the main character well, but we also get the chance to get to know the important side characters.
It also helps that the starring supernatural creature happens to be among my favorite fictional creatures. The power they have is amazing and I liked how Walsh played with the myth and what they were capable of. The scenes where our hero is dealing with these powers and its impact were amazing to read, especially because the effect on him was described so amazingly well. Actually, I can say that about all the atmospheric scenes and the scenes where magic and powers are used.
Just like in the first book, the book introduces quite some new supernatural species. In a very natural way we explore what this world has to offer and what the possibilities are. I can assure you that they are endless. I also like how there is this one storyline linking this story to the previous one, even though you will be able to read this story without having read the first one. I think I will eventually read the complete series, because I want to know where the big storyline is going!
I loved the idea of a half-Gorgon, half-Fae private detective. And having a buddy with Perseus’s bloodline who’s a computer whiz made for an interesting team. Trying to stop a siren from decimating the male population of New Haven made for a great plot. In fact, the set-up of supernatural characters was original and fun, and that’s what made the story fun to read. The writing, for me, though, could have been more polished. And that was my only drawback for the book. The battles between Gabe, who tried so hard NOT to turn people to stone, and his adversaries–who were powerful and ruthless–were wonderful. So was the complex interaction and motives of the characters. If the writing had matched the author’s ideas, this would have been a five for sure.
Song of Wishrock Harbor by Krista Walsh is the second book in her Invisible Entente series. It is written in third-person from Private Investigator Gabriel Mulligan’s point-of-view. Gabe has fae blood which grants him increased strength and the ability to open doorways from one place to another. He has also inherited the stone gaze of a Gorgon because of a distant Gorgon ancestor on his fae side. This is an Urban Fantasy Mystery Adventure in the vain of old private eye stories. It is well-written with complex and compelling characters.
I really loved this book. Once I started reading, I did not want to stop. I had to find out how everything was going to be resolved and what would happen to everyone involved. This story has an amazing plot and even better characters! There’s action, mystery, and plenty of detective work. The characters are all interesting and written in a way that you can’t help but identify with them and form emotional attachments.
I love Gabriel, he’s such an intriguing character. His background has just the right amount of angst in it. It makes him the character that he is and makes you genuinely feel for him. He’s part fae and has the stone gaze of a Gorgon, which has caused him to isolate himself from relationships with others from fear of what might happen if they accidentally get a glimpse of his eyes. He doesn’t want to be alone and is in fact quite lonely. This, however, is not the only aspect of his past that has shaped him. He is also carrying the childhood trauma of his brother’s drowning with him. The way this very normal trauma is coupled with his supernatural trauma is genius and just makes him seem even more believable and relatable. Gabe is not only one of my favorite characters in the Invisible Entente series, he’s one of my favorite fictional characters.
