A deadly bombing takes Navajo Tribal cops Bernadette Manuelito, Jim Chee, and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, back into the past to find a vengeful killer in this riveting Southwestern mystery from the bestselling author of Spider Woman’s Daughter and Rock with Wings.
When a car bomb kills a young man in the Shiprock High School parking lot, Officer Bernadette Manuelito discovers that the intended victim was a mediator for a multi-million-dollar development planned at the Grand Canyon.
But what seems like an act of ecoterrorism turns out to be something far more nefarious and complex. Piecing together the clues, Bernadette and her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, uncover a scheme to disrupt the negotiations and inflame tensions between the Hopi and Dine tribes.
Retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn has seen just about everything in his long career. As the tribal police’s investigation unfolds, he begins to suspect that the bombing may be linked to a cold case he handled years ago. As he, Bernadette, and Chee carefully pull away the layers behind the crime, they make a disturbing discovery: a meticulous and very patient killer with a long-simmering plan of revenge.
Writing with a clarity and grace that is all her own, Anne Hillerman depicts the beauty and mystery of Navajo Country and the rituals, myths, and customs of its people in a mystery that builds on and complements the beloved, bestselling mysteries of her acclaimed father, Tony Hillerman.

Enjoyed. Love all Tony Hillerman books and this was keeping up the tradition.
Doesn’t quite match her fathers 5 star books but close. Good read.
Been a fan of Tony Hillerman books over the years and was anxious to read one of these written by his daughter. I was disappointed with this one in that all the clues rounded up by the police investigators didn’t end up help solving the mystery they were working on. Had they not done any investigation, the ending would have been the same. I liked the previous books where the Indian cops would solve the mysteries with their wits.
She writes just like her dad. Enjoyed this book. Did not guess the ending. Hillerman’s rock.
Good follow thru on her father’s characters and stoies. Looking forward add to more.
Ms. Hillerman has done a masterful job of continuing her father’s work. If you liked the originals you will love her interpretation of the characters.
Excellent. Love this series!
I love the southwest and Ann Hillerman knows all it very well. I especially like reading about the lives of the native americas in the southwest. She treats them with the respect they deserve. She crafts a believable and exciting mystery to put her stories over the top for enjoyment.
I really liked this book. Not as good as her Dad’s but really good.
Takes up where her father left off
Following in her father’s pen marks, Hillerman continues the adventures of our favorite tribal police officers. Fun read
This new series is not as good as the original but it is still nice to have the old characters back, with more type devoted to female characters.
I enjoyed reading mr hillermans books.this is the first one I read from his daughter. It won’t be my last
Anne Hillerman follows in her father’s excellent footsteps. She paints a vivid portrait of Bernie (her main protagonist) adapting to life as a 21st Century Navajo policewoman living in a fascinating part of the country.
Excellent job carrying on the tradition. Highly recommended.
Her best of the three continuation Manuelito/Chee novels, in my opinion. The character development was very good and the pacing and plot development was excellent ( even if a little predictable). It was like a comfortable old sweater, it was a good read and I was sorry to come to the end.
Like her father’s, I really enjoy her books. This one was no exception.
Anne Hillerman has managed to further her father’s legacy. Having been a fan for many years, I am enjoying the continuation of the lives of characters I feel I have gotten to know personally. I’m hoping to be able to read more of my favorite characters in the future.
Anne is a fitting heir to her father. The series continues to be deeply enjoyable.
Good book….like visiting family
